      Yep it will be by cruise ship. It's my first cruise trip so I'm very excited! I've been to Bermuda some years ago by plane to visit a friend, and I had such a great time there! Beautiful coasts, gorgeous weather, lovely people. And the stars at night, mesmerizing. Mosquitoes were kinda mean though, I'll probably need some bug spray this time. I remember coming home from the trip and just knowing I will have to bring my mom there for her to experience such a gem. We'll be going together this time and I'm very excited. I want to try scuba diving there as well. Though we're not swimmers, I've heard you don't need to know how to swim to go scuba diving tours? Do you have advice on that?

    I absolutely fell in love with Bermuda. I’m from Canada and immediately felt the warmth of the Bermudians and the scenery was breathtaking. I’ve been to quite a few countries and Bermuda 🇧🇲 is almost at the top. I do agree with your criticism of public transit though. I ended up renting a scooter which was exhilarating but equally terrifying at the same time. I actually got tailgated a few times by public buses.

    Yes. Also let’s talk about the xenophobia. Although it isn’t seen in public it’s very much happening in bermuda. Plenty of xenophobia in work places and schools. Especially the King Edward hospital. A lot of the locals just aren’t nice and that’s the truth… Many locals i’ve met are extremely sweet as well and I love them with all my heart. But there’s really no need for the hate when we’re living on a small island.

    Omar, I had a few chuckles watching your video tonight. I am a Bermuda lover and just love traveling there. I have been there 30 somewhere around 32 times in my lifetime. I have not been there for 2 or 3 years and am hoping to get back later this year or possibly next year. I am alone when I travel and love staying in St. George's. Since I am alone, I just feel so comfortable and I love all the friendly people. I have been renting small apartments here and there in St. George's and love just walking around. I have made so many friends there during my travels. If I get back, it will be my last because I am getting to the age where it becomes more of a problem to get there than anything. I understand how it could be difficult to live there for the reasons you mentioned, but vacationing is fun and once you get used to the bus routes and ferry times, you can get anywhere. Of course, I am in no hurry when I visit. 😄

    my mother is from Bermuda and I'm a dual citizen. As much as the busses there can suck, they're actually pretty decent compared to a lot of busses in the US. In NJ i don't know anyone who uses the busses. It's a shame Bermuda got rid of its one railway. I don't know too much about the history but I can see how hugely helpful it would be to have a railway travelling from end to end of the island. expensive to build but would make those narrow crowded roads safer and make the busses less packed.

    I loved living in Bermuda, I was there for three years and I can't think of anything bad to say about it . . . Oh, there is one. When I moved there from Portugal, I purchased a new car, a beautiful little Honda CRX, that I had shipped there from England as part of the deal - this was in 1989. When I went to have it registered the Transportation Control Department (TCD) informed me that my car was one inch too wide to pass their inspection. I got a call from someone there at TCD who said they "knew a guy" who could help me. So, this other guy calls me up and tells me he can build a big wooden rig that will squeeze my car to reduce it one inch and it would only cost me $2000. Absolutely true story. I ended up selling the car to someone that was moving back to the U.S. . . . sigh.

      It's not too bad for ex-pats. It's worse for locals, those born and bred. Everyone is in each other's business and every neighbourhood has an unofficial neighbourhood watch-translation: some nosey old lady who peeks out her blinds and watches everything that goes on. The good part is that there are no serial killings or kidnappings in Bermuda-you'd never get away with it.

    Omar, I’m an American who lived in Bermuda for 5 years, and I’m right there with you on the transportation system, and the horses on the railway trail. The first time I saw someone riding a horse on the trail, I was totally caught off guard. Then I had to be mindful of where I stepped, not wanting any horse poop on my shoes! And I had to ride the bus every day, and every day I held my breath hoping that nothing would go wrong. But oftentimes it did. Buses were either late, or sometimes not show up at all. And several times I was stranded in Hamilton because the drivers went on strike right in the middle of the day! Two things that I definitely do NOT miss about Bermuda. Oh yeah, I’ve picked the 76’ers to be in the NBA finals. But I’ve also picked them to lose to Golden State! Sorry man!😆

    • @OmarJames
      @OmarJames  2 роки тому

      Yeah i'm right there with you. The trails are so narrow, when a horse comes through it makes you stop whatever you doing. And I hate horses. They are way too big. I remember using the busses in the early '90s, when I was stationed at the Naval base. We called the busses "pink elephants." They were inexpensive (we were able to by discounted tokens on base) and, as I recall, fairly reliable. I lived in St. George's and, even though I had a motorcycle, it was nice to relax on the bus during long trips, such as going to Hamilton. I don't remember ever having an issue with the busses during the two-years I lived there. I am sad to hear things have changed, as I want to visit again someday and had planned to use the bus for transportation.

    • @OmarJames

    Number 2 should be number one. Agree with all of them. My pet peeve is that the re are a gazillion restaurants but it's hard to find a good variety of take-out. First of all, the food restaurants produce for take-out is substandard from dining in, like they feel like you can't complain the way you would if you had a server coming to check on you. Then there's not a lot of variety in take-out, like everyone serves the same old stuff like burgers, fries, wraps, pizza, etc. There's not a lot of choice. We've only got a couple of Chinese restaurants and they all serve the same thing and it all sucks compared to overseas. The sushi is substandard. Pizza is substandard. Mexican is substandard.
    When you do get good take-out it's not consistent-one day it will be great and the next time it will be crap. It's like everything costs a fortune and then you get small portions and crappy food. If you go to the UK you get spoiled for choice as far as ethnic food because people come from their native countries and open nice restaurants but here, meh. I'd like to see good Trini, African, Greek, Turkish, Haitian and more restaurants open here. What we have is so blah and boring.

    considering a job posting for relocation to Bermuda for It industry.
    Thought it was good pay but when i see the cost of living i wonder how it could be economically any better than here in Canada.
    The only way i see it working out is if I find a place to rent out there in Bermuda for 6 months of the year, (Dec-May) and then rent it out in the tourist season (June-Nov) to recoup costs, as well as saving money while living here, in Canada. If I got paid the Bermudan salary they are offering me, I would also still lose 25 % in taxes here in Canada automatically.
    So i found your video here, (was expecting a British accent but you sound more American than i thought!) and heard you wanted to be a lumberjack. Lol
    Canada has got to be the best place to be a lumberjack! So i thought hey, what if we swap places like an Air BnB for 6 months at a time. My city, Winnipeg, is about 3 times the size of your island, and our population is about 600K, so you will NOT have trouble not running into people you know. You can blend in a be forgotten pretty darn easily.
    The major downsides though are common here too.
    Public transit and roadworks. Due to the weather fluctuations, half of them being around zero degrees. means that water seeps into cracks, then expand, causing massive potholes. Roads are repaired every couple years constantly so the joke is that there's two seasons, winter, and construction!
    If you can handle winters being -30 C (with windchill sometimes as low as -50 C - skin freezes in less than 60 seconds), then you can enjoy yourself here. no hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, scenery, no bugs, no wild animals, no HORSES!
    Anyways, thanks for the video. You seem to have a great personality, at least for an internet troll.
    Beautiful island you live on.
    cheers

    What happened to the transportation system? When I was growing up, buses arrived every 15 minutes. Last time I was in Bermuda, I waited 40 minutes on middle road for a bus! What’s the issue? Less drivers? Or is it a pay thing?

    • @OmarJames
      @OmarJames  2 роки тому +2

      Ok , so this might be a long reply. First, I don’t pretend to be an expert on this topic, just giving my observations so if anyone reads this and has more accurate information feel free to correct me.
      I would say that the biggest issue is that the BIU is extremely powerful and unionization makes it very difficult for the system to adapt. For example, PTB has struggled to keep enough functioning busses on the road for various reasons. One idea was to streamline the schedule and routes so they could, let’s say, have one bus service multiple routes that would normally require three separate busses. The problem was that it would cut into the driver’s hours, so the BIU put their foot down because they serve the interests of their members, not the general public. That’s why the schedule and routes haven’t changed in decades. And that’s probably why you were waiting for 40 mins

    • @NainGeantMiniature
      @NainGeantMiniature 2 роки тому +2

      @@OmarJames You know Omar, to be fair, other parts of the world have way more powerful bus driver unions and don't see these kinds of issues over so long a time. I think the problem is more complex than that and unions are being used as scapegoats here.
      The main evidence of that is the nature of the problem: there are not enough routes, not enough hours, not enough stops and not enough vehicles. All problems that can be solved by adding drivers, adding workers, adding buses and spending more on service delivery.
      A union will NEVER be against increasing its membership.
      Surely the union presented a counter-proposal? Why have we not heard about that? Was that rejected too?
      Maybe the blame lies on the people who refused to negotiate afterwards.
      Since the Union has a vested interested in increasing its size, it has an interest to stay at the table and negotiate.
      What about the other side? Is it in some group's interest to keep this a hot button political issue when not in power to hound an opposing group and then blame the unions when in power when they don't fix things?
      Now I've been on the island for less than a year now, I don't know who are the groups and parties involved, but if any group fits the bill, you let me know :)

I went to Horsebay and had to take the 7 to Hamilton and transfer to ferry to get back to the cruise. Otherwise than this, I had a great experience. PS. Why the FFF is the KfC so expensive!????? $50 for 9 pieces of chicken.

I'm actually planning to visit in two weeks and I was hoping to get around with buses and ferries. Looks like I will need an alternative haha. Any suggestions? I've looked into the mini electric car rentals but I've got a group of 4 and we are trying to stick to a budget. So maybe the electric bikes or mopeds would work? Does a moped sit 2 people?

    • @OmarJames
      @OmarJames  2 роки тому +2

      How are you arriving? If by cruise ship, it might be worth grabbing a taxi. They actually aren't as expensive as people think. You can get a cab from dockyard to Hamilton for around $50 which is a deal for 4 people. Otherwise, public transport isn't so bad I wouldn't give it a try, it's just unreliable at busy periods. Moped can fit two people but wouldn't recommend if you don't already know how to ride. Hope you have a great trip!

    I want to travel to Bermuda soon, it looks amazing! Before I travel anywhere, the concept of me getting lumped into a tourist group with a bunch of foreign people who can't stop talking about Barcelona, Naples, Aruba and Antigua while at their current location would not be an ideal experience. I think a scooter rental and lower cost dining options are easy 1st steps to remedy this. Can anybody offer any other advice to a person who wants to experience authentic Bermudian culture and not the quick Coles Notes 'cruise-ship corporate' version? If anybody can also think of some popular gathering places preferred by the local residents that would be great! I'm interested in sightseeing of course. But I'm also interested in local customs, cultural pastimes, local artists and public spectacles. Thanks for your videos!

      Not gonna lie to you, my man. Finding housing in Bermuda right now is about as tough as it’s ever been. The further away from Hamilton you get, the cheaper it will be. So if you need to save money search in Somerset, St Georges/St Davids. But still expect to pay 1500+ for a decent quality studio. Join some bermuda housing groups on facebook if you on there

    Businesses on the island don't list or maintain their addresses on Google Maps.
    Key roads OUTSIDE of Hamilton look like they were bombed by Americans lost on their way to Bagdad.
    Bermuda grocery stores sell too much terribly unhealthy food. Loads of processed sugar, loads of junk food, loads of overly processed and industrialized american food of poor quality and taste. Feels like nutritional science got lost on the way to the island.
    Too many roaming abandoned pets. (Dogs are sad to witness and can be dangerous at times, but wild cats are apex predators and should not be left to roam unless we want all birds on the island dead).
    The weird LGBTQ hate. Its a losing battle, let it go, history is not with you. Let people love whoever they want.
    Nobody responds to emails.
    Internet Service Providers suck (coverage, speed, throttling, prices)
    Lots of key businesses don't operate on weekends ( I'm all for a 5 day or even a 4 day work-week, but not everyone can afford to go out in the middle of the work week to run errands; some service providers should run a tuesday to saturday or Wednesday to Saturday schedule ).
    Road paint is heavily faided in dangerous areas, signs and reflectors are insufficient in corners as well.
    Laws and policies surrounding drunk driving need to be bolstered. Ex: If you serve liquor to someone who's driving back home and they get in an accident you should bear some of the responsability. Buses should run at night and parking should be more lenient.
    Road lights in key areas have wide halos instead of narrow beams which creates a lot of light pollution via spillage and are distracting in certain areas.
