My mom did the same to show her girls it doesn’t take much material things or relatives to make you happy or secured.
She took scraps and made a feast, took pieces of cloth and made gowns, she took 20.00 and made a party. She romanticized everything with candles flowers and white linens and very much like Ellis she used wine goblets. Today we do the same for her! Just fancier and on steroids😊.All these things assisted with the healing of trauma, it was a safe place where she celebrated her daughter’s on her own terms which in turn created a safe and peaceful space for love and laughter. Ellis and the girls reminds me of my mom and my sisters and our most intimate times with very little❤

I smile at our feasts now. Rice Dahl or lentils or black eyes or maybe red beans ( you know Trinis and we beans) lentils was my favorite. Slice cucumber, tomatoes, shredded carrots. NO meat cause we was pooooor😊. One pack ah koolaid which I was responsible for. I used to eat that sugar and pour all of it into the glass jug😅😅😅😅 then get scolded cause nobody could drink it except me😮
This was the 80’s in NYC. My mom did her damn thing and we wore something nice on a Friday night mommy said no birthday suits but your Sunday best! Blessed humble memories. For dessert something cheap like $$$ store cookies or Mexican wafers and the Neapolitan 🍨 when she had extra funds like an extra 5.00 we got some Malta! You couldn’t tell we nothing😅😅😅😅 in we head that wine glass, candles, flowers, with a white lace table cloth was saga girl things.
