I don't care what anyone says, 1996 and 2000 were the most exciting Games in swimming history.

The United States will most unlikely lose this event.

To come to think of it, I have never seen the United States lose this event.

      I don't think they've ever lost it. They got dq'ed in 2007 and 2013 (I think) but that's it.
Anyways, this years world championships might change that. With Nathan Adrian missing they might not have the anchor needed to finish ahead of the UK.

Possible but unlikely. It would have been Hall vs. Thorpe in the final leg again. The key difference though is that this time the US started that final leg with the lead. The Aussies gave Thorpe the lead going into the final leg of the freestyle relay. Hall caught him shortly and while Thorpe did come over the top to win, Hall actually had the better split. Seems unlikely that Thorpe would have had the speed to outsplit Hall as drastically as he would have needed to here, especially given the significant US lead

Back then I also thought they'd put Thorpe on freestyle and Klim on butterfly, but it actually made more sense the way it was. Klim and Huegill were almost equally strong on fly (both were faster than Ian Crocker in the individual event), but Klim broke the world record earlier and was the best Aussie 100 m freestyler at that stage. Thorpe became stronger on the 100 free in the years after that, but at that time he was more dominant in the mid-distance events.

@@mfdixon1985 LOL it is not possible. That is even being WAY too generous. Klim had a faster split than Thorpe ever would have, remember this is the guy who was only 5th in the 100 freestyle at his own Trials that year, and still came nowhere near catching Hall (starting from well behind of course).
