Many years ago I owned a Les Paul Deluxe but I sold it to buy a car. Yes, I know, dumbest decision ever, but it was the only thing I owned that was worth anything and I wanted a car. A couple of years later an old guy nearby was selling his early 70s Gibson 335, I saw it but didn't think I could afford to give him a fair price. A couple of days after I saw it my girlfriend went back to him and bought it for my birthday present. I now own a few guitars but that's the one that I will never sell, and we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary last year. So for purely emotional reasons, that's my favourite kind of semi-hollow guitar.

My first electric was a 1965 Epiphone Casino (Gibson ES330 counterpart). Yes, since it’s a hollow body you must learn to tame its tendencies towards feeding back, but without the center block of the 335 it rings out and is therefore usable acousticly without an amp. No plugging in to practice. Also nice in that sense for songwriting. Oh, and it’s way lighter than a 335.

I have a 330 and and 335. They are completely different animals and I love them both. I was lucky to hit on a new 330L 10 years ago or so when they briefly were selling those. Having the neck join in the same spot as my 335 was the key for me taking the plunge, love it.

You're absolutely correct The 330 (Casino) and the 335, while they look similar, are entirely different guitars. The Casino is, of course, fully hollow while 335 is really a solid-body guitar. I don't think that the 335's hollow wings do much of anything at all except perhaps cause feedback under certain conditions..
My Casino is the older version with the neck joining the body at the16h fret. While this does mean that extreme upper frets are not readily available, the neck being so firmly a part of the body gives this guitar an overall acoustical resonance that the longer-neck joint version may not possess.
I recently re-strung it to Nashville Tuning for recording and it really does chime and sing like the top half of a 12 string.
A lot of great music has been made on those old 330s and Casinos.
Good luck and good music to you with yours.

I have a few T style thinlines in my collection. All of them have something that makes them different to one another.
Baxter, you talked about rotational playing of the guitars on the stand. I have all my guitars in cases lined up and just go to the next one in line when I feel like playing.
Knowing that a thinline or semi hollow is coming up next always puts a bigger smile on my face. There's just something special about them.
The combination of weight relief and semi hollow resonance works for me.
Jonathan, you also talked about your Gretsch and all your points were exactly what I experienced with my Gretsch G6118t Players Edition Anniversary.
That one on the wall behind you (Jonathan) a little while back looked similar.
I don't/can't play like Chet or Rockabilly but always enjoy the way my cover songs and jams come out.
The controlled feedback that I can get from the High Sensitive Filtertron pickups and the resulting vibration of the guitar against my body is what you reminded me of when describing your Gretsch experience. I'm 63 years old and literally burst out laughing every time this happens. Still a kid at heart. 🤣😂🤣😂
Thanks, guys, for yet again reminding me of how much fun life is with a guitar. (or lots of different guitars 😁)

You guys are spot-on: each one has its own sound, and you won't know until you play them which one(s) work for you.

I played an Epiphone Joe Pass model until the frets needed changing and the varnish wore off the neck. The thing I found about most vintage hollow bodies is that there usually is a buzz somewhere. They develop over time and eventually, I didn't do too well on the used market. That frilly thing on the trapeze usually is a problem and it can be heard through the pickups. Instead of solder welding them back on, consider taking it off.

It is my go to guitar. On hollow body feedback, its only there when you want feedback. Collings has a "trestle brace design" that provides strength, lightness and responsiveness while eliminating unwanted or accidental feedback. Collings put some thought into this guitar!

Great vlog. I have a 339 and I love it. It thrives in Open G and the higher action makes it easier to play slide. But then I lived in rural Kentucky, my pickup truck is a Ranger (not an F150) and it isn’t UK blue, and I have a Taylor dread instead of a Martin D18 or D28 so there is all that.

The 339 flies under the radar! I loved the Epi version as well. That and the Uptown Kat would be my choices for slide…likely the 339, tho, for feedback reasons.

The unsung hero in this category is the Taylor T3. I own a 335, Fender Thinline and Gretsch 6120. Also two Taylor T3’s one with factory Bigsby.
On both I installed Tom Anderson pick ups, coil splitting pots, and Grover locking tuners. These improvements, combined with beautiful wood, great craftsmanship, and the unbeatable Taylor neck make them the best of the bunch. You can buy them used for a song on Reverb, at least for now.

yes ... that's the difficult thing about trying to pick out a guitar. You really do need time with it to decide. Another thing is having time to try several back to back in an environment where you can crank the amp a bit and even try them in different amps.

Had Gretsch streamliner g2622 for little time. Sold it to a friend. He played in my band and realised that I really liked its tone. So I decided to look for my own semi hollow, and since 335 shapes are too big for me, I settled on the Gibson ES les Paul. It's rare, and certainly overpriced now, but dang she sings. Something to be aware of : they have really big frets, so bring it to your luthier if you are like me and do a lot of slides. I invested a lot of money in that instrument with a new nut, fret job (2 times) and installed a vintage bigsby b12 I had somewhere, but that tone is soooo specific and unique it's worth it. It's really closer to an ES than to a LP, don't let the shape fool you 😉. It goes even further than the ES335 'cause it doesn't have a "proper" centerblock in it, it's actually closet to a Casino 🔥

I love hollow bodies! I own a pair of Gretsch's and a pair of Gibson's, and my favorite is my 1967 ES 330. I traded a strat for it back in 1978, and have never regretted it. There is something about the way it resonates, and the P-90s sound fantastic. Feedback is an issue, and when I used to play louder gigs I would use my Les Paul and later another strat, but the 330 is still my fav.

Love the topic. My 1st semi-hollow came by chance. I was at an estate sale, for vintage electronics. Bought a Samick Greg Bennett RL-3; Korean 2002. Interesting semi, I found out; later. The back, sides & centerblock are routed from a single piece of mahogany (top is bookend flame maple). It’s has a smaller body, than a 335. I think of it as a ‘Thinline Les Paul’. I ended up really liking it
Someone told me that was originally featured in a Gibson model. Any truth to that?

I have both full hollow Eastwood Rockerbox (it does have a small block under bridge and a bit longer tail block under Bigsby) and 4 center block thin semi-hollows from Gibson, D'Angelico 6 & 12 strings and Aria Pro II. Every one of them has a very unique and special character. My wife likes the tone of the 1972 Aria Pro II better than any of the others, it has aftermarket DiMarzio's and sings with a full throat roar when turned up.

Bizarre that the Epiphone Casino isn't prominent here - Noel Gallagher? Keith Richards? Gary Clark Jr.? The friggin' Beatles? Not to mention the model name is the same as your shop! 😁I bought a 2011 50th Anniversary Casino (Royal Tan burst) during lockdown and I love it to death - it's almost supplanted my '86 MIJ Telecaster as my favorite.
