  • With curved horns, a lush coat, and a speed of over 80 km/hr, the blackbuck offers much intrigue. But one of India's fastest animals is losing out to the pressures of development. Grasslands, the blackbuck’s favourite habitat, are being rapidly destroyed, threatening this antelope’s way of life.

I believe why the Swedish botanist and taxonomist Carl von Linne gave the sasin its species name cervicapra, which was the 17th-century German leech Werner Rolfinck and the 18th-century English leech John Freind’s name for the pasang, is that he was inspired by how the Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi called it Capra bezoartica, which means bezoardic buck and fits the pasang. Bezoardic means “producing” “‘bezoar’ ‘stones’” and pasangs “produce” “‘bezoar’ ‘stones.’” Do you think so?
By leech, I mean a “doctor” and it is an old name for one that came from the Old English word for a “doctor.”
By Carl von Linne, I mean “Carolus Linnaeus.” A taxonomist is someone who studies taxonomy, which is the systematic classification of living organisms.
By pasang, I mean the wild “goat” or “bezoar” ibex and it came from its Persian name.
By sasin, I mean the “blackbuck” and it came from its Nepali name.
By buck, I mean a “goat” regardless of age or sex.
Bezoar is a calculus or concretion found in the maw or intestines of some deer, mostly ruminants, formed of concentric layers of deer matter deposited around some foreign substance that acts as a nucleus.
By maw, I mean a “stomach.” By deer, I mean any “animal” and yea, the word deer through its Old English root deor at first meant any “animal,” which makes deer and deor like Tier and dier, which are German and Dutch for “animal.”
A calculus is a small stone in healing or “medicinal” terminology. A concretion is a hard morbid formation in the body, a calculus, or a stone. Concentric means growing in successive ring-like layers around a nucleus.p

What's being done to conserve these grasslands? And are they releasing the African Cheetahs here?

      1. Grasslands are not conserved in India as they are termed as wastelands!
      2. Yes
Sorry for making you annoyed with this answer.

@@UwUO-OUwUThanks for your reply. It makes me sad to hear this. I thought at least India is doing better in conserving their natural habitats compared to my country Bangladesh.
But please enlighten me, if they are releasing the Cheetahs in these "Wastelands" isn't that a useless endeavor then? Or will they finally declare the grasslands as a "conserved area" after releasing the Cheetahs there? If not all of this would be a futile attempt in bringing back the Cheetah to the "sub-continent"..

@@ishraquewajed4048 India has done great in some areas but it's not enough.
Cheetahs are being reintroduced in one national park(Kuno). Which has a good amount of grasslands & enough livestocks for them to hunt.
The same National park was named as the desired location for rehabilitating Asiatic Lions(which should be the utmost priority, cause currently their pop is getting higher in GIR and the probability of infectious diseases are also increasing)But now it is being used for Cheetahs.
Yes, you are right. This could have been a great opportunity to convert India's huge wastelands into conservation sites. This could have helped in reintroducing cheetah in a better sustained way.
