  • The Banni Grasslands in Kutch, in Gujarat span over 3000 sqkm. These grasslands are home to a pastoral community called Maldahri. But in the 1960s, the government wanted to protect this region from salinity ingress from the Rann of Kutch and dropped millions of seeds of an exotic species called Prosopis Juliflora from helicopters.
Since then Prosopis Juliflora has overtaken the native grasses in the area. The locals call this tree Crazy B

Good video. I wany to request my fellow Indians and the Govt, never ever plant any exotic species. Always plant indigenous species of India like Neem, Badam and Ashoka plants. Even Hybrid plants affect our soil and ecology.

we have the same problem in Somalia. the tree spreads through livestock. when they eat its leaves, they cannot digest so they excrete. the feces fertilize the seed to it grows quickly. the plant is water intensive so it will not let any other vegetation grow nearby. it is very difficult to eradicate.

i am from Kutch, Gujarat, we call this tree as Kajhada in our local language and i can assure that this tree is a nuisance. the legend says that when Indira Gandhi came to visit Kutch once she threw the seeds of this plant from her helicopter and thus started the invasion of Kajhada tree. today this tree dominates the natural world in our region u can see this tree every where. it can grow any where and i liked that (down to earth) made a video of it. but rather on focusing on the impact of this tree on its natural world it focused it on the impact on peoples lives. the maldhari are not a local residents of kutch i think they come from Mehsana district of gujarat where they are well known for their buffalo farming. the original inhabitants of kutch who are involved in cattle grazing are people of Rabari community who have dominated this region in animal husbandry since a very long time. they have cows, camels, sheeps, goats & buffaloes they roam in the whole region from farm to farm with their herds of those animals.

We as a human being, raising trees and jungles at very slow rate which is catastrophic mismatch with rate of global warming. In this situation which trees are saving us? Hardy and fast growing trees like prospera jullifera, lantana, Acacia, etc. In our Marathwada region, native species are saved by the prospera jullifera known as wedi babhal I. E. Mad acasia. Wood of these trees are used for making coal in large scale. If these trees were not there, local coal mafia wood cut indigenous trees indicriminately. This is another side of prospera jullifera. However, documentary above is very wonderful and concerns highlighted are very junine. Local grasslands and foodchains are being distrurbed by the foreign species. I would also like to work with NGO like Sahjeevan who adopted very scientific and practical approach without wasting time in waiting for government assistance. Salute!

So why depend on grass ? why not grow fodder trees ? the more carbon is added into soil from addition of compost and dead plant material the faster is dilute the salts. perhaps create a small forest in the middle of this grassland and use the trees as food for cows.
start fermenting these leaves of these trees, so the cows can get the bacterial flora in their stomach to digest the plants.
