In some Eastern European countries, roma were reduced to slavery with the possibility of buying themselves. And carrying a lot of gold on you was a way of showing that you are a free person, capable of buying yourself. The gold that girls wear during weddings is gifts from their parents, part of the wedding trousseau, but also gifts from in-laws. (at least this is the case for my family)
Those programs focus on Irish traveller communities in the UK, no? Not Romani at all. The slur "g****" has been incorrectly applied to 2 disparate groups of people, hence the confusion. And I've never watched the shows, but I have had Irish traveller neighbours my whole life. Theyre good people. And their weddings definitely don't include "prom dresses" because that's not really a term in UK English. Each to their own, hey?
Exactly. I believe more so UK travellers and they lable themselves as Gypisies but yeah the show is about their culture and customs. They're not claiming to be Romani at all.
The US version had a mix of Irish Traveller and Romanichal, but didn't always differentiate between the two. And they almost exclusively focused on people living in Appalachia, which is a whole other set of stereotypes (basically, "hillbilly" stuff -- I'm not sure if that word has made it across the Atlantic), and those stereotypes get mixed into the show as well. And a bunch of people on the show have said that a lot of it was made up -- one of the girls said that they made it seem like she lived in a mobile home, when she actually lived in a regular house and her family just had the mobile home for traveling sometimes.
@@LightTrails Romanichal history in the US is pretty interesting (I don't know as much about Irish Travellers in the US), but none of these shows ever put it into any context. I've seen one or two UA-cam videos about the Stanley family from Dayton, Ohio (who are distantly related to main Romanichal family on the TLC "reality" show) but the Dayton stuff is mostly "spooky" videos from the cemetery where they're buried (which does have a lot of really interesting-looking stones, with poetic inscriptions and gorgeous monuments and so on -- that was one of the first Romanichal families to come to the US, in the 1850s, and they settled in a part of the country that was pretty perfectly situated for horse-trading between people who either bred or tamed horses in the west, and people who sold them in the east, so they were fairly wealthy and could spend a good amount of money on those fancy stones.
This explains why Dick Grayson has had his wedding planned, canonically, since he was a little kid lol He even had designers lined up for would-be bride. Ig he's like if I got money I'm doing my ancestors _proud_ lmaoo
I remember when I had to tell Romani friend about this show and it actually upset them quite a bit..and justifiably so. Those who have seen any of this show will know what I’m talking about
I think it’s fascinating that the traditional wedding dress is red, isn’t that the most traditional colour for an Indian wedding Sari? I wonder if that’s something cultural which was carried from your people’s origin in India. Either way - those dresses are absolutely stunning.
to be honest every time a previously marginalized culture is doing something over the top think about why they do it. with cultures from the caucasus mountains (which i am a part of) going big with interior design and things like that just reflects the fact that were not able to have something like that before and now that they have money they can finally afford it (my father buys a lot of shoes because he often used to walk barefoot)
Those gypsy weddings with extra large prom dress are irish Catholic travellers ... up until satelight tv in their caravans these girls dressed more like amish people very modest .. the entire look of the culture has changed in my life time .
I genuinely don't understand why people view things that are over the top as bad especially when it comes to weddings like weddings should be over the top it's a special day of love and unity
The Romani bori wearing and receiving gold would be very practical as well, I imagine. If you are being persecuted and are not allowed to settle anywhere, Gold is portable, can be hidden, can be reshaped, passed down, and is accepted in any country.
I think even the less elaborate wedding gowns would be made of best of fabrics. I'm white finn and don't know a lot about romani culture, but I think finnish kale have very beautiful clothes. I was so confused as a kid why everyone was acting as romani women wearing their national dress was somehow "not good" when the women looked like princesses.

@@callalily3994 Oh no, that's terrible.
@callalily3994 in Ireland many do live in mobile homes, some in houses too and many live together in housing estates specifically for travellers.
Welcome back to the red and gold. Love from the motherland
So being someone who is mixed romani and Irish traveller the "racist" people and outfits on TV are part of the Irish traveller tradition.
This explains why Dick Grayson has had his wedding planned, canonically, since he was a little kid lol
He even had designers lined up for would-be bride. Ig he's like if I got money I'm doing my ancestors _proud_ lmaoo
Romani and Romanichal aren’t the same thing. You yourself have made that distinction.
Romanichal are a subgroup of Romani people
Red brings good luck. Most Indian brides wear red too. Red and gold jewellery that is a traditional Indian wedding for most parts of India.
Their weddings take place at the courthouse
I think even the less elaborate wedding gowns would be made of best of fabrics. I'm white finn and don't know a lot about romani culture, but I think finnish kale have very beautiful clothes. I was so confused as a kid why everyone was acting as romani women wearing their national dress was somehow "not good" when the women looked like princesses.
Someone finally said it. I swear watching that show was like watching hill billy’s get dressed for the hoedown 🫠💀
What does the colour red mean in Roma weddings?
Weddings everywhere are over the top.
I respect and enjoy
Your Passion for your culture and people
