God Tiswas was fantastic! I didn't realise til watching this as an adult, how skilled a presenter Sally James was. Chaos all around, but she keeps her cool, and is on top of it throughout. The Human League never lost their lovely humility, to this day 100% authentic, unpretentious, and genuinely genuine. Respect!
all I can say is Philip should be given the nobel prize for just existing and the ivor novello award for just getting up in the morning. they all look comletely amazing
First time I have seen this since it was broadcast. I loved Tiswas. 2 Tone was my music of choice at the time, but the Human League did some great, forward-looking tunes that ironically now make me nostalgic. Sound of the Crowd especially.
@1:00 Ha ! ha ! Phil looks genuinely scared when the granddad suddenly turns up, like: _'What the fuck are you planning do to me'_ while Joanne and Susanne are pissing 'emselves laughing in the background.
Funnily enough Soft Cell did also appear in this final series of Tiswas, and Marc Almond was scathing about their treatment on the show in his autobiography. From what I remember, he and Dave were among a procession of guests presented in line to the recurring character His Royal Pieness (comedian Fogwell Flax doing a ropey Prince Charles impersonation, big plastic ears and all), only for them both to be dragged into The Swamp (basically a builder's skip that replaced The Cage) and had the final season's most feared weapon, the Gunge Gun, turned on them. "I was held underwater and my skin cracked", Almond complained, or words to that effect!
Got a soft spot for girls who can really laugh & take it in good humour when they get pied in the face. I wonder if Jo and Suzanne did the Ice Bucket Challenge?
He is so nice and sooooo cool. I can remember my sister having a newspaper cut out of Phil bare chested, the story was about him having his nipple pierced. Everybody has everything pierced nowadays. Is nothing sacred!

OMG Phil look sssooooooo uncomfortable in this interview if you can even call it that.He wants to get out so bad...koodos to you phil for being a good sport lol.
@TickleMaster2009 Phil was/is most definitely NOT gay; he was in a relationship with Joanne Catherall(dark hair) at this time. He had been married prior to that. He was in a relationship with Joanne for 8 years: after that he also dated Susanne too(blonde hair).
"...I pretended I liked them so they let me in". And to think that one of these people used to be his best friend. It's amusing looking at his beef with Martyn now

Plus 70’s Bowie, T Rex, Sweet ( Bricklayers in make up) ... Human League really did themselves proud though as they went on to define the 80’s for so many the way Glam and punk did in the 70’s for them..

pastymorant He's like that in interviews since 2000 too. But if I was being interviewed on TV I'd take a second to think of what I should say too. He says in a post 2000 interview that he was the last kind of person to become a front man for a band.
@@jr9249 Yeah ... he's got this mythology all worked out, where hes the least likely person to succeed, the least likely person to front a band, and besides, he's really deep, subversive and kinda makes punkrock. We all know the truth however. He ditched the founding members of the Human League, hired two school girls, fronts the band, and changes the output to 100% pop - which it has been ever since. For some reason hes delutional about what he's doing. He keeps insisting that the music is so arty and different, when in actuality it is not.
Notice Sally had to throw the pie at Suzanne. They couldn't let the Phantom do it anymore because politically correct execs had banned men from throwing pies at women on TV.
I think that Philip Oakey looks a bit like a woman in this video.I am very sorry about my comment because I really love The Human League.Especially Philip Oakey.
There seems to be a lot of immature annoyance and drama going on between the girls and Phil. What was that about? Did they tend to be like that? Were Phil and the brown haired girl dating by then? She seemed annoyed by him and trying to make that very obvious for those watching the show.
the girls were still very immature as far as the business was concerned, I think they were a bit put out that they had to stand behind Phil, its more annoyance as still being seen as backing singers instead of being what they thought they were, which was being full members of the group. At the very beginning of the vid, when Sally James apologises for the lack of seating, you see Susan look at Joanne and give a sort of sarcastic backwards nod as if to say, "yeah, nice one Tiswas". There are always divisions within a band to some extent, the Human League was lucky to begin with as the former keyboard artists didnt want any publicity and were more than happy to let Phil be the front man on all counts but when the girls came along and after a couple of hits, it began to become about being equal, you cant blame them for that because without the girls coming along, the human league would have floundered and dissolved, Joanne and Susan reinforced that band without doubt and made a bazillion boys, just like I was back then, besotted with them ( I was entranced by Joanne, wow).
mrisor892 Are you British? (I'm from LA but lived in London for a little bit) I don't remember hearing about the two girls being seen that way by American boys (I was 6 when we became obsessed with HL here when they became famous in 1981, but I've read a lot of British guys saying that in UA-cam comments.
mrisor892 Oh I thought that look between the two girls was because Phil seemed annoyed by the fact that they were leaning on him and he moved so they would get off him and they felt annoyed by that.
mrisor892 If I was a 17 year old school girl and someone plucked me off a dance floor because they needed someone on stage because their band mates had left the band, I would have felt really lucky and indebted to the person and not seen myself as an equal and if I was him I would have felt like I had picked the wrong people if they were dealing with him immaturely. I remember what girls were like in the 80s (I was a school girl in the 80s) in America and they could be pretty immature and catty and difficult. I don't know what they were like in Britain back then.
Yes mate, I am British and I grew up in the 80s. Because Phil was the lead singer and seen as the front man, he was always the one who was interviewed the most but in all honesty, the Human League would have gone nowhere until the girls came along, The Human League was a 'static' act, with the two synth players standing awkwardly behind and Phil performing with a standing mic up front. It didnt have the right dynamic so Phil said they needed to find a girl as a backing dancer but more importantly, she needed to be able to dance to give them a different look, more lively. Phil and the bands manager went to clubs around Sheffield and ended up in Crazy Daisy's where they saw two girls dancing there, they were Susan Sulley (the blonde) and Joanne Catherall (Brunette) and they both were dancing with confidence which was decided was important for performing on stage so they were asked to join and they readily agreed but they were both only 17 and doing their school exams, plus their parents were terrified of the whole sex, drugs and rock and roll' aspect of the music industry but when they met Phil, and saw what a nice bloke he was, they decided to let them do it but Joanne's Dad said that if anything untoward happened to his daughter, he would shoot Phil! With Susan and Joanne on board, The Human League started to get somewhere, hitting the charts in 1981 with Love Action and then smashing the charts at no.1 also in 1981 with Dont you want me baby. Interestingly enough, the verse sung by Susan in that song caused her problems, and in the studio she fluffed the verse 65 TIMES and in the end the studio technicians gave up and stitched individual sentences together to make that one small verse.
Así es. Era la moda en esa década. Muchas bandas la adoptaban. Philip es heterosexual, después dejo de vestirse así y salía al natural, naturalmente guapísimo ❤️

Little did they know, Dare would become one of the greatest albums of the 80s.
And little did they know, Tiswas would be regarded as one of the best ever kids programmes.
Open Your Heart is the best song on Dare, I don't care what anyone says.
Phil Oakey always seemed to be a good natured fella.
Part of their appeal, all three come-off as likable and more like regular people. Definite chemistry for sure.
all I can say is Philip should be given the nobel prize for just existing and the ivor novello award for just getting up in the morning. they all look comletely amazing
I love how Phil is very concerned about not getting gunged and look cool, then gets shit on in the end! 😂
Little did they know, just a few months later they would have the Christmas number one single.

At 1.40 it was the "limit" nightclub in Sheffield.
WRONG! it was crazy daisy's, not the limit, there is an interview on YT with the girls and they go into detail about it....

i bet phil was pissed...they didnt do silly shows like that for long after that.
sprintbass Did they do many interviews in 1980-1983? I don't remember hearing here in America anything about what he was like as a person
Phil stayed with two baddies 💯
Those two girls standing up are cute but the real nice bird in the group is Philippa, the one sitting down...
Hahaha, I'm sure Phil was mad since he probably put in a lot of time into his hair and make-up. But he should've known what he was getting into.
