Why Sand is Becoming a Scarce Resource
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 чер 2024
- Sand is one of the hidden cornerstones of our globalized world. However, our growing global demand already exceeds the level at which sand mining can satisfy our need in a sustainable way. This video examines the environmental and societal problems of extensive sand mining as well as possible solutions and next steps.

Video No. 2
It's only a matter of time before you get big, these are high quality and interesting videos.
Thank you, Ethan! :)
It has started already
Mark his words, this channel has so much potential
Agreed, you can tell these videos are made with care.
@@VallisYT I think the same. Unless you stop uploading.
I'm under the impression that you are a newer channel, given the small content at the time of this being posted. These are very well done videos, but one thing that I am particularly glad to see is the list of sources in the description. More videos, especially those of an educational nature, should have sources listed. I'm subscribing and hope to see more quality content.
I also wish more channels would list their sources, so I thought I'd start by setting a good example :D And you are correct, I started uploading videos on this channel only two months ago. Even uploading just one video per month is demanding, but I value quality far more than quantity, so I think that's alright :)
People are saying that you'll get big. I don't have the knowledge to say that, but I can say I really liked this video, and the one on Dunning Kruger Effect.
Keep doing your hobby, because remember, at least you're making some people's day better.
Good luck.
Thank you, Fahim, for your thoughtful comment! I have seen all the comments about this channel blowing up, and while attracting a large audience is certainly nice, it is not really something I have control over. I'll try to upload good videos, even if it is as rarely as once a month, but everything else depends upon both luck and the algorithm. So, I'll just go ahead with my vision for the channel as planned and see what happens :)
I can already tell this channel's gonna go places once you get more and more videos out. I'd never actually heard about the scarcity of sand until now, and it's insanely interesting to know about. Thank you for making the video! I hope a lot of people get to watch this soon
Hey, thank you for your kind comment! When I first heard about the topic, I found it to be both disheartening yet absolutely fascinating, so I'm glad to hear that the video did something similar for you :)
@@VallisYT bruh what's up no more videos ? what happened :O
It's incredible how your videos don't get more views and aren't monetized. Your videos are 100% on point, very well narrated with an agreeable Swiss accent, a great use of stock footage to glue your topic material together, incredibly interesting and concise yet comprehensive, professional level editing and scripting,... They truly have it all!
Why aren't you a full time creator? This content is genius!
Even your logo looks like you're a full-time professional doing this...
Amazing video, never thought about sand as a finite resource
Thank you! If the video made you think about sand in a new way, I have already achieved my goal :)
Everything is finite resources, even sunlight.
The efforts you put into the narration and the editing is worthy of a million-subscribers channel at the very least. you will blow up one day or another for sure
Thank you B, I appreciate that! :)
Excellent video! I've always wondered what it would be like to be in on the ground floor of a high-quality UA-cam channel. This is one of topics that never gets talked about. Possibly it's too granular...
I'll show myself out.
Keep up the good work. I look forward to your next video.
Thank you, Derek! And you don't have to show yourself out, good puns are always appreciated around here, you probably had a good chuckle before you sand me your joke (now I'll show myself out as well...)
You got the right formula to blow up on the educational side of youtube. Good job man! It's really high quality and I think it's very important and good that you put the sources in the description.
This channel is gonna blow.
Well, maybe, I'll try to make one good video per month, and everything else depends upon the grace of the algorithm gods of UA-cam :D
Yes for as long as he steers clear of topics like race, gender and vaccines, he should be OK.
That's alright, that still leaves me with topics like religion, astrology, veganism, death, drugs, and homosexuality, so I think I'm good :D
@@VallisYT Your videos are already high quality, so if you improve over time I'm sure the alghoritm will pick up on you. Good luck!
@@VallisYT I say wade into it! I think we benefit from good discussions about all these topics. I know it puts people off because things can grow toxic rather quickly; however, I believe we benefit from it more than anything else. We can't address the challenges of the world by ignoring them, and we can't exist in a state of inept rage just because people have a differing viewpoint than we do. All we can do is come at the discussion with the best information and logic we can muster and if we're not persuasive then that's just it.
Holy shit dude, you just popping outta nowhere, and producing these high level quality videos, how? I’m looking forward to see what your next videos are gonna be.
You appear to make information rich videos of the appropriate duration(short&smart¬ full of blah blah=best), I for one look forward to where this channel could go!!! Subbed✔️
Thank you for the kind words :)
Both of your videos seem very thorough, and are about topics no one really talks about. Love them! Hope you'll get more attention soon.
Beautiful work! I just watched all three videos currently available on your channel, I'd love to see your content come back. Educational, cited, and thoughtful content like this is what the world needs more of, it's the perfect way to get niche yet valuable information to larger audiences.
Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate it! :) I think about new videos every day, I hope there will be new output in summer
Another excellent video, looking forward to your future work!
These videos look really well made. You should be proud of them.
This video was marvelously done! Subtitles, sources, chapters, descriptions... Keep it up!
Ah, someone who appreciates all the special features UA-cam offers, thank you :D
Hey. I'm really glad my algorithm found your channel. For sure I will recommend it to my friends. I also was quite surprised how young your channel is and how few videos you have put up. Expecially considering that the quality is very high.
I'm looking forward to seeing you grow
Hey, thank you for your nice comment, Aaron, I appreciate that! :)
Amazing video, precise and well documented. I never thought about the sand before, at least not in this way. It really is a very important ecological and political matter. Thanks for make me think about it.
Thank you, Ignacio! I had a similar reaction when I first stumbled across the sand crisis and realized that this resource that I had unthinkingly deemed to be ubiquitous is in fact the core of current and future global conflicts of interest. If I have managed to convey these thoughts, my work here is done :)
I love that you didn't stretch this video out to 50 minutes like so many channels do these days. However I would be interested to know more about why we can't use desert sand or other alternative materials.
Oh man, your channel is a hidden treasure, looking forward to see your high-quality videos and you going big!
Thank you, Robin, I appreciate that! :)
Incredible videos man, killing it
Such a good video! I had heard of the sand crisis before, but nonetheless there were plenty of facts I didn't know beforehand, I really like how you got more specific (e.g. by citing a the report) and kept 'entertainment' (in the sense of keeping it engaging) and information in a very good balance. I look forward to the next video!
Hey, thank you for your kind comment, I'm glad to hear that the mix of information and entertainment worked for you :)
Your channel is gonna blow up. Mark my words. This is quality work
thank you for citing your sources, many educational and video essay channels fail to do that regularly. I hope this video catches on the algorithm next!
Thank you, ahre! I wish more channels would cite their sources, so I thought I'd start by setting a good example :D
Just found your channel and I love your topics and quality. Followed!
The quality of this video is amazing, great job!
Would love to have more dept about the proposed solutions. Tbh this situation is not the best to do that but I feel like in future videos this could improve them even more.
Awesome video! I never even had an idea that this was a problem, while it seems really big and serious. You deserve more viewers!
Thank you, Dan! If this video made you think about sand in a new way, I have accomplished everything I set out to do with this video :)
Just subscribed, can’t wait to see this grow
Thank you, Nicholas! :)
Your channel will definitely take off, instant sub
Pity you only made 3 videos and the channel didn't get traction. You deserve recognition for these brilliant productions.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that :) I think about new videos every day, hopefully there will be new output soon
Keep up the great work! I really liked what i saw from you, so far.
Thank you, Eschron! :)
Just saw both your videos, hope you continue your work, they’re really interesting, and they provide a fantastic perspective to knowledge
Thank you, Rushi! I'm already deep in the middle of working on the next video, it should be released in one or two weeks :)
@@VallisYT need any help with editing?
Yep, making people realise there is a sand issue will be the only positive thing this phallic tower will ever achieve.
Damn, the sources in the bio tho, added to the quality of the video making, the humor and seriousness that goes into them, keep up the good work man !
Thank you, TG! I wish more channels would show their sources, so I thought I'd start by setting a good example :D
This is a fascinating look at something I wasn't aware of at all! It's always disheartening to hear that there's yet another resource that's being exploited/mined to the detriment of the surrounded ecosystem. However, to go along with your beautiful sentiment at the end about the burj khalifa, there's a silver lining in this, and it's people like you! You do exhaustive research on important subjects for the sake of spreading awareness, and even include your sources in the description as I believe all educational content creators should. Thank you for your hard work and excellent video! I'm looking forward to more.
Thank you for bringing this to my (and anyone else who didn't know about it) attention.
Hey Azmodan, thank you for your thoughtful comment! I had a similar reaction when I was first told about the sand crisis. However, learning about the issue and then talking about it seemed to be the only thing I could do, so I am glad to hear that you liked it, feel free to go through my sources to learn more about the topic, especially the first link (the 2019 UN report) is definitely worth a read :)
Hey bro, just came back to check you out, and saw that your videos are blowing up! Can't wait for the next one man 💪 keep it up!
Hey Collin, glad to see you again! True, the algorithm is treating me very kindly at the moment. The next video will be out in one or two weeks, stay tuned :)
This was such a high quality video, I wish you good luck with the algorithm gods!
Thank you, Alex! Up until now, the gods were quite benevolent towards me, so I can't complain :)
I like many other people in the comments are convinced that you've got something special with your channel. I'm really excited to see where you go and what content you decide to make
Thank you, Noah, that means a lot to me! :)
I am so grateful for you creating this channel. I hope more videos coming soon!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Julio! I'm already in the middle of working on the next video, it will be released in one or two weeks :)
Thank you for the high quality content :)
That's what I'm here for :D
Cant wait for this channel to blow up
I have just today discovered your channel, through the Dunnin Kruger video, and after binging your whole catalogue I can confidently say your channel a diamond in the rough. (I tried to make a sand funny, but nothing came up, other than what I wrote)
Thanks for making this. I had no idea this was even a thing.
Why does this channel have so little views? This is awesome!
Keep up the good work!
You have only two video? Dude! This channel is awesome! the production quality is top notch. Narration is top notch. Why there is only two videos? I want more!
Aww, thank you, Rajarshi! There are only two videos because even the effort of making videos at my current slow pace amounts roughly to an unpaid part-time job, but I'm already deep in the process of making the next one, it should be released in one or two weeks :)
@@VallisYT ahh great! I hope you are able to make it full time in future though!
Man I'm sold.. subscribed
Videos are wellmade !!
Thank you, I appreciate that! :)
This has taught me some interesting stuff :0 I've heard of the Singapore importing sand thing (I live in Indonesia), but I haven't really looked into it, so this quick summary and the sources in the description are a big help! Subscribed, here's to more educational vids :D
(P.S. do you have any other social media accounts? It's be a good way to rally up more viewers from outside!)
Hey, that's interesting to hear! I feel like there are always so many things I have heard about once or twice, yet I never have the time to look them up, that's a bit frustrating. But of course, things like the sand crisis or climate change always seem much more real and threatening when they happen right outside your (or your country's) front door :D
PS: I do have Twitter, although I use it only occasionally, yet I think it is a nice way to publish short statements and thoughts about my videos and everything else
PPS: I really like your name :D
Keep up the great work!!! You gained a subscriber with notifications on. Hoping for one video a month!
Thank you, Chriztmas! I'll try to upload one video per month, but especially the research process is quite time consuming, and I'd always choose quality over quantity. However, I'm pretty much done with my next video, it should be released tomorrow :)
@@VallisYT awesome! Im all for it Vallis, you're going to blow up! Great work!
Amazing work both in the visuals as well as the research aspect. Absolutely worth the like and subscribe. Hope the algorithm waves pick you up to the top of the sand dune lol.
Thank you, Rahul! :)
Trust me, this channel will go big soon
Love your channel
Thank you, Rick! :)
Damn, I'm Indonesian and I've only heard about 24 islands disappearing now. I feel like we already have a lot on our plate without it, lol. I really like your videos, subscribed.
This is a great video. subscribed
Thank you, Al! :)
Your videos are great
Waiting for new videos to come up, I really like yours !
As someone who struggles greatly to hide their German accent, I feel like you improved a lot from the first video on already. Keep it on
Hey Tim, thank you! My first video was recorded half a year before this one, and yes, I can see some improvement as well - after all, improving my English skills is one of the reasons why I started this channel. Also, it is very helpful to be called out in the comments on my false pronunciations, so I don't have to repeat my mistakes :)
Great video! I just became your 999th subscriber.
Uhh, thank you! Glad to have you on board, Adam :)
This video is very similar to HAI's but goes deeper into the topic and doesn't include these unfunny jokes every 10 seconds. Good work and you've just got a new subscriber :)
Funny, I thought I had watched most of the bigger videos on UA-cam about this topic, but the one by Half as Interesting seems to have slipped through my research efforts :D However, glad to have you on board, Pan!
"sand mafia which is considered to be one of the most powerful and violent organized crime groups in the world"
well that's a sentence i never expected to hear
Love your videos. I thought you had at least 1 million subs.
Here in my city we used so much sand imported 200km from a river city, that the banks of the river now are 50m deep water, you can't get into the river without drowning. and we made the river into a super lagoon, the deepest the river goes is 150m, it was a 10m river.
You can imagine it being the bottom deep of a valley which was a glaciation melting and accumulating sand from all over the entire plate, and we scooped it all.
That's how much sand it was, and there's even a billionaire of sand.
Oh wow, that sounds very concerning! May I ask where you live?
Quality stuff
Great, now my friends think I'm a nerd for talking about a sand shortage. Honestly though, the videos are awesome and this channel is definitely going to blow up.
very good video
Thank you, especially coming from someone with your name :D
Interesting video
Thank you, Ha2kon! :)
You sir, earn my subscribe! Keep it going!
Thank you, good to have you on board :)
Its about time ur channel gets a million subscribers......i love ur work....keep it up....and when u become a famous UA-cam guru, I shall invite u to come and meet your fans in India......Best of luck for ur future endeavours!
The only issue with good videos like these is that.....the youtube algorithm rarely ever recommends it. They just recommend idiotic entertainment related videos. This happens with me even though i voluntarily make sure to shut videos related to entertainment as soon as i figure that its not something that i could learn from.
Aww, thank you, Prabhav! :D And I share your concerns regarding the algorithm, but apparently the UA-cam gods were kind enough to recommend my first video, so currently I'm quite alright with the algorithm :)
@@VallisYT Happy to know UA-cam is transparent enough to let u know that. Hoping to see ur channel grow exponentially!😊
It should be only a matter of time till the algorithm realizes your channels a consistent comeback too, Just know the longer your videos are out there the more they'll look like your prior one. Aka build the backlog now
It's a miracle you're only at 1,000 subscribers
Well, everyone has to start somewhere, and to be honest, the 1,000 subscriber milestone came way faster than anticipated, especially given the fact that I uploaded my first video only two months ago, so I'm still humbled by the amount of people this channel has attracted :)
your editing is very well made are you doing it by yourself?
Thank you, aeyde! Yes, I did the editing, first I used Adobe Premiere Pro for most of the moving images and videos, then I used Adobe After Effects for the text animation. However, I am still learning how to use these programs, especially After Effects, so with every video I try to improve my editing skills :)
Great Quality, I like the simple, generic essay style you're going for. also, I can't tell if you have a german accent or just a really rough voice lol
Thank you, Delio! It's probably a German accent, although I'd definitely prefer the really rough voice :D
only 2 videos and your quality is this good?
You need more views.
Okay I actually love your accent, but hearing coral pronounced as Carl is really funny
I think a little algorithm tricking could greatly benefit your channel, just to establish the base so that you would be able to go on with the things in your mind
To be honest, the current numbers already far exceed the feedback I had expected to get on my first two videos, and I have no idea how exactly this happened. In fact, it worries me a little that so many people subscribed to the channel based on only two videos (or mostly just one), since I don't know if they subscribed for the vision I have with this channel, or for the bashing of stupid people which many of my viewers seem to have seen in my first video (which definitely wasn't my intention). However, I won't complain, I'll simply go ahead with my videos as planned and see what happens :)
It would take us a giant thorn in the eye to see we have a problem.
Here before a million subscribers.
hahaha
To Be fair your vids are way too good. insane quality
Thank you, Rimmert! :)
The sand must flow.
I like this channel (Also I hate decision of UA-cam to delete dislike button)
Thank you, Kacper! And yes, I miss the dislike function too, although I am not overly optimistic that UA-cam will bring it back :/ However, if you are interested: the video currently has 65 likes and 2 dislikes
Why does this remind me of when I was in kindergarden and everyone fought over the fine sand, which was far more fun to play with than the crude and more abundant one. Huh.
Darn, Grian had the right idea.
Such good video!! Are you by any chance german? You remind me of Ultralativ, in a really good way!!
Thank you, Aena! Yes, I am German, although I hope my accent didn't give me away too easily :D And thanks for the Ultralativ comparison, I love his content, his visual style is a huge inspiration for me :)
note to future self: remember you subscribed to this channel before it blew up, at 4.12k subs
6:35: what is the source for these numbers? The English in the text below the table has a lot of grammar errors :(
Hey, thanks for being critical about the sources I use! The source shown in the video is the English translation of a dissertation by Luis Fernando Ramadon, a Brazilian scientist from the Federal Police. If you speak Portuguese (I don't), the text was published in the Brazilian Journal of Police Sciences: periodicos.pf.gov.br/index.php/RBCP/article/view/809
There is also an article by Ramadon on sandstories.org, a platform with the aim to raise awareness for the sand crisis. You can read his article (which also provides some background for the numbers in the video) here: www.sandstories.org/stories/estimated-annual-value-illegal-sand-extraction-lfr
@@VallisYT Yes! Coincidentally, I do. The original text is in proper technical Portuguese, so it might just have been poor translation.
Don't take me wrong, this is an interesting and important topic that I had never thought of before. It's just that particular moment caught my attention.
The sand must flow ---
Isn't the Fly Ash alternative exchanging one problem for another?
Here before 1 million
Most people have their head in the sand and they don’t want informed people trying to pull it out. As a physics professor, I tend not to have my head in the sand or up my arse, which allows me to become better educated about for example, sand. May the sand be with you.
I like your approach :) Having one's head pulled out of the sand and being shown where one is misinformed may be painful, yet I think it is an experience we should strive to have more often
@@VallisYT Less painful out of the sand than out of the arse, but then I'm only guessing having experienced neither.
Actually climate change encourages use of wood (because sustainable). Japan does this already on large scale. So yeah, it is possible.
True! There are lots of cool houses built with wood that are both environmentally friendly as well as architecturally impressive. I am curious to see how things will develop in the future :)
“How can you run out of sand? Just get more sand lol”
We shall be know here as elders :')
Good video btw.
Your name shall be rightfully immortalized in the annals of this channel's history :D
6:54
We need more data on the sand resource flows.
Where does it come from, where does it go to, and how much sand does it Cotton-eye Joe to?
Now I probably can't listen to this part of the video without hearing the song as well, thanks for that :D
@@VallisYT subscribed, not that you didn't earn the sub already but I forgot to hit the button and your reply reminded me to do so.
can’t we make more of this type of sand ?
Someone make an efficient, cheap, sand irregularity exaggeration machine. :)
Is there any way to contact you, the maker of these videos?
Hey Emil, sure! You can either write me here in the comments, you can contact my via my twitter @VallisYT, or you can use this mail address: contact.vallis@gmail.com
(Not sure whether UA-cam has problems displaying my first response due to its mentioning of the mail address; if that is the case, my first response said that you could contact my here in the comments, via my Twitter @VallisYT, or via my mail, the latter of which can be found in the About-section of my channel)
I think you're on the road to success, coming out of the gate strong with these videos.
Perhaps you might collaborate with another rising content creator like Jake Tran? I think you could accomplish powerful change together
Thank you, Caleb! Although I am not too sure how I feel about future collaborations-I think I value my total creative freedom and working according to my own schedule more than the potential gain in popularity :D
I blame Anakin Skywalker
Believe me, it was quite a challenge to write this script without making jokes about the coarseness of sand, so I won't start now :D
But if it got every where we wouldn't have a sand shortage 😜😜😜
Omfg, your channel is small but quality af. It's gonna be great, would invest.
Can I ask what is that accent of English? :>
Thank you, Mati! It is probably a mixture between a partially exaggerated American accent and a suppressed German accent (because I'd definitely prefer to sound like the former than the latter) :D
Why couldn't they use desert sand for reclamation projects?
