    Good stuff Gary, something different. Your videos are always so relaxing, like Bob Ross of metal working. Cheers! Chris.

    My father had one pretty similar. We don't see a lot of those anymore. All plastic now. Definitely worth repairing.

    Great video Gary. Something to be said for brining an item back to service. I have some tinning paste that is used to do lead loading body repairs on classic cars. It might be a useful option? Not tried it on galvanised steel it can't see why it would not work? It did make repairing the fuel tank for a vintage stationary engine that was wearing along its seam.

    why didnt you cut out the rusty bit? it will likely keep moving out from the bad spot and be leaking soon again

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  6 років тому +3

      Atlantic Film what’s the point? It’s got to eat the rest of the bad bit then try and get through all that solder! By that time the rest will probably be scrap anyway!

    For repairs like that I like to use muriatic acid and a copper soldering iron much easier

    Just about to try to repair a small vintage watering can, which leaks from the bottom seam, as I've never soldered before this video was very useful, and I picked up some good tips, thanks I learned a lot. Thought I'd try and run some solder around the inside of the can around the bottom seam. Any thoughts ?.

    I'd have smacked some JB weld on there and called it done, it was good enough for my valve cover.

      I was just getting the J-B Weld out to fix my vintage galvanized wash basin I just. Figured I'd watch a few videos on repairs, to see if there was something better. I think JB Weld will work fine for me!

    Funny you mention about chainsaws, as there is a tree trimming crew at the house next door right now. Of course I hear chainsaws.

    Hi Gary, you are right I would probably just have binned it.lol. I did not know you could solder over galvanised stuff. Is the fume danger less with soldering galvanised stuff as opposed to welding? ( on much thicker stuff).
    Must admit I love the smell of meths and use it for cleaning my finished wood turned pieces. Done very little with metal for the last 2 years, since I started working with wood.....again. Great video and a salvaged functional garden tool to boot.

      There is no danger in soldering or welding galvanized material.. it’s an old wives tale. Take a read at this www.dropbox.com/s/1i8v2djczr11f9g/WeldingGalvanized.pdf?dl=0

      I've taken many chemical engineering courses, and the article you link is not accurate, or scientific. Amoung other things, it uses the logic that because zinc is essential for life, that is ok to breathe. Even breathing oxygen at high concentrations can be fatal over time. I forget who said it but... nothing is so toxic that it can't be taken in small doses (like arsenic), or so innocuous that a large enough dose can't harm you (like water). I suspect the article was written by a corporation that was trying to limit liability from workers exposed to toxins. Having a cigarette once in awhile probably won't kill you, but it might...

      Well, you best tell the author, not me! All I know is I’ve been welding galvanized for forty years with no problems.

    think i would have put another spout comming out where the rust holes were and have the spout return the water into the top of the can, just because it would look insane :)

    Like an old metalwork teacher of mine said of my effort at a flour scoop, "There's nothing wrong with that there that you couldn't fix with an angle grinder".
