Good stuff Gary, something different. Your videos are always so relaxing, like Bob Ross of metal working. Cheers! Chris.
Great job, for saving a vintage watering can from the trash dump and continuing it’s useful life.
Thank you very much for the vídeo, as I had no idea how it could be done!! 👏👏👏👏
It's good to see someone still doing such things today. Bob's your Uncle.
Fanny's your Aunt.
Hey, it worked and is holding water... and it looks pretty good!
Got to admit i love these old watering cans
Holds water! Should make your Mrs happy. Well done
Well done! Happy wife!
My father had one pretty similar. We don't see a lot of those anymore. All plastic now. Definitely worth repairing.
Nice Job.
Thanks!
Great video Gary. Something to be said for brining an item back to service. I have some tinning paste that is used to do lead loading body repairs on classic cars. It might be a useful option? Not tried it on galvanised steel it can't see why it would not work? It did make repairing the fuel tank for a vintage stationary engine that was wearing along its seam.
Happy wife happy life. Thank you for your time.
😁
why didnt you cut out the rusty bit? it will likely keep moving out from the bad spot and be leaking soon again
Atlantic Film what’s the point? It’s got to eat the rest of the bad bit then try and get through all that solder! By that time the rest will probably be scrap anyway!
Usually better to repair than replace. 👍
ye did good!
For repairs like that I like to use muriatic acid and a copper soldering iron much easier
I like how he's mad about the tree. I am too now...
Not bad. better than tossing it out.
Just about to try to repair a small vintage watering can, which leaks from the bottom seam, as I've never soldered before this video was very useful, and I picked up some good tips, thanks I learned a lot. Thought I'd try and run some solder around the inside of the can around the bottom seam. Any thoughts ?.
Just make sure it’s very clean.
Ok I'll use methylated spirit as you did .cheers.
I'd have smacked some JB weld on there and called it done, it was good enough for my valve cover.
Casey Urquhart not very pleasing to the eye though!
I was just getting the J-B Weld out to fix my vintage galvanized wash basin I just. Figured I'd watch a few videos on repairs, to see if there was something better. I think JB Weld will work fine for me!
Funny you mention about chainsaws, as there is a tree trimming crew at the house next door right now. Of course I hear chainsaws.
Same flux i use got it from plumbase
Nice repair. I always try to avoid having to buy anything new that's plastic. My daughter thinks it would look great painted pink. 😊
Shadeskast my wife would probably agree! ( with the pink).
😊😊😊😊 Gary thanks for taking time to put content up for us followers. We do appreciate the effort and your time.
Hi Gary, you are right I would probably just have binned it.lol. I did not know you could solder over galvanised stuff. Is the fume danger less with soldering galvanised stuff as opposed to welding? ( on much thicker stuff).
Must admit I love the smell of meths and use it for cleaning my finished wood turned pieces. Done very little with metal for the last 2 years, since I started working with wood.....again. Great video and a salvaged functional garden tool to boot.
There is no danger in soldering or welding galvanized material.. it’s an old wives tale. Take a read at this www.dropbox.com/s/1i8v2djczr11f9g/WeldingGalvanized.pdf?dl=0
I've taken many chemical engineering courses, and the article you link is not accurate, or scientific. Amoung other things, it uses the logic that because zinc is essential for life, that is ok to breathe. Even breathing oxygen at high concentrations can be fatal over time. I forget who said it but... nothing is so toxic that it can't be taken in small doses (like arsenic), or so innocuous that a large enough dose can't harm you (like water). I suspect the article was written by a corporation that was trying to limit liability from workers exposed to toxins. Having a cigarette once in awhile probably won't kill you, but it might...
Well, you best tell the author, not me! All I know is I’ve been welding galvanized for forty years with no problems.
I would have just glued the patch on with half a tube of silastic!
Successful !!
think i would have put another spout comming out where the rust holes were and have the spout return the water into the top of the can, just because it would look insane :)
Like an old metalwork teacher of mine said of my effort at a flour scoop, "There's nothing wrong with that there that you couldn't fix with an angle grinder".
I have a hole in my Bosch.? I may try that
Good on you! I can't solder to save my life.
Where's Ralph, I heard the bark, he doing good 🐶?
David TexMex he’s doing really well thanks, I’ll have to do another video.
damn a hole cans...lol
Great video, My wife told me to make some Galvanised pants, said no need for the Rub Down if you know what I mean Gary ??
It looks like your wrist is doing better!
Mike De La Mater yes, much better thanks.
Not worth the time to repaire but that depends on who's doing the repair .
It was for me, got me loads of brownie points from the wife!
What a crappy job-almost no metal prep.
So what, it fixed it!
