    Rob, I have to agree with you, those are amazing examples and makes you wonder how big one could print those processed images to , say against full frame images .
    Now , I think a high ISO is 800 haha - but, given the limitations I might have with street images at night , I am given hope to clean up some of those if I shoot at higher ISO and I don’t have a tripod with me.
    Rob , this wasn’t done without some thought and effort on your part, so I would like to thank you for exploring this for us and posting this video .
    A big thank you once again for all your hard work .

    Very informative video as always Rob. A revelation for me was watching you open up Windows Explorer and see that you could actually preview your raw files! Thanks for this video, Rob. I upgraded to PhotoLab from a really ancient PhotoLab version (out of use for years, but still registered) which cut down on the price and made it more palatable for me. And I saw the same effects you described. I think the "oversharpening" may produce an artificial look, and I will be fiddling a bit more with respect to low contrast images (e.g. gray scale chart) to challenge the limits. But I am still impressed, and considering your chat from last Sunday with Ben re: sensors and the foreseeable future, I am now very much relieved to be better able to stick to my Olympus cameras line for the time being.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 роки тому

      @@RobTrek Ooops ... two snafus on my side. Which I might have known if I had researched better and paid attention. (a) Fuji's X-Trans sensors are obviously not supported, yet. (b) More to the point ... in view of the discussions long time ago to future-proofing Raw files, my workflow for Lightroom import generally encompassed "convert to DNG" since back when. Big no-no, as soon as you want to use DxO Pure Raw: It only works on Raw files as pure as the cameras make them, e.g. NEF, ORF, ... you name it. So I might want to change my Lightroom workflow from now on if I want to make use of the advantages of Pure Raw. (Note: Seems like the competition works around that limitations; but I didn't test that.)

    Like you, I was sceptical when when I first heard about PureRAW so downloaded the trial version and tested it on some old images. I bought it almost immediately after. One thing I like about it that the other denoising programs don’t do is it retains the existing RAW edits, which is a huge time saver. In pre-COVID times I shot live music, so my starting ISO is 3200 using fast primes on a full-frame DSLR. But during lockdown I bought myself a OM-D EM-10 m3 to try out M4/3. It’s fantastic in good light, but I’m looking forward to trying it at a music venue along with PureRAW to see if it stacks up against the DSLR, so that I can dump all those heavy bodies and lenses.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 роки тому

      I think iso 1600 and under anyone would be hard pressed to tell the difference, even if you process both cameras. At 3200 it will depend on the lighting. Over that, you'll get great results on m4/3 but processing full frame at the same iso will be better.

    Thoughts on 1000+ image-workflow? (I have E-M1 Mkiii)

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 роки тому

      There are two products PureRaw and Photolab. I have 400+ image workflows and use Photolab 4 Elite which has the Deep Prime (same as PureRaw). If I need to use Lightroom/Photoshop, I denoise them first in Photolab and then export into a sub-folder as dng. That has a waiting time of 30-40 minutes. I then just work with the images in the sub-folder. Someone commented that they had problems with PureRaw processing more that 20 images at a time - some images didn't get processed or only partially. I don't have any problems with Photolab. I did a wedding and did everything in Photolab 4 Elite, then just exported the jpgs for the client. Using Photolab avoided having to export as dng first, so I don't have essentially 2 raw files per image. I only need LR/PS when I need to layer multiple images, something Photolab doesn't do.

    Great video. I did the trial of DXO Photolab 4 and enjoyed it but gulped when I saw the price of the software. I'm currently still on the subscription model of Lightroom/PS and also, use On One Photo Raw and Topaz plug-ins. Oh, and I also have Luminar 4 (not the newest AL version). It's getting to the point that having too much software like having too many cameras is just confusing. I keep thinking at some point I'll switch completely away from Adobe subscription and choose a primary photo editor and if that happens I would probably choose DXO photolab 4, however I wish it had the ability to do layers. One One Photo Raw is really good and does almost everything but it's not as smooth and efficient as LR/PS, so I've been hesitant to switch completely. I'd like DXO to add more functionality in order for it to be a complete editor that could replace everything else.

    • @RobTrek

      Thanks. I know exactly how you feel. I can't get away for lr/ps for the same reason. The layer workflow and asset management features are hard to beat. If they do, it would need to be run on a more powerful tablet. It takes some processing to denoise.

    I have the full package too, I think it's fantastic, amazing in detail etc. Throw a processed image into PS enhanced (cropped image) and I've found it has some shortcomings. It's good but I think AI Topaz & On1 are in the the same ballpark. It is IMHO without doubt the software solution over high MP future solution. I see Medium format or 60 mp Sony, Canon, Nikon coming up trumps for resolution imagery for the Pro Pro's being the choice of perfectionists.

    Which makes me a little skeptical ... Why do you use an exposure time of 1/00 when taking an inanimate picture?

      The images where actually from a set I took last year for an ISO test video I did. A viewer asked that I do a low light test for noise so I ran a series of shots from ISO 100 to 25,600. Rather than take all new shots I just used these instead.

    I tried to purchase the promo at the $89.99 and discovered my card was charged for $92.69 ! My total invoice price was listed as $89.99. No explanation received yet from DxO regarding this 'surcharge'. Great software but bad business practice. Shut me down from purchasing or promoting DxO products ! I will say the trial version was impressive

    PR would be perfect if it had a couple of sliders to adjust (limit) the amount of corrections. Too much sharpening and sometimes too much denoise.
    At this price point it's not forgivable.

    Imagine if PureRaw is incorporated into Olympus cameras so that the noise reduction is handled natively! No more complaining about poor low light capabilities. I must admit I'll probably not buy this software as I limit all my shots to 800 ISO anyway.

      That would be nice but I think they would need to improve the cpu in our cameras by a huge factor otherwise we'll be waiting several minutes per image and swapping batteries every other image, LOL.
