With six years left until retirement, we’re now beginning to plan our future in Sicily. My wife, who is of Italian heritage, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to retire in such a beautiful country. I'm so happy for you!

@TheSicilianLife - Are the rumors of Southern Italy not having good Healthcare facilities and enough doctors, true ? I would figure as a retiree that would be something to be concerned about. So, curious if you happen to have any insights into it.

We have personally had very good experiences with doctors and dentists - very good. We will update everyone if and when we need more than that. We mailed that in so that they will take 12% federal witholdings from Croce's check, if and when we make more than 25k over combined income (including his SS). If we over pay, they will refund, of course. At least that's our understanding. Best of luck on the move. Just curious if you spoke with accountant/commercialista about italian income tax liability. I assume you are establishing residency in Carini, which has over 20K population and thus does not qualify for the 7% tax scheme. I know there is a tax treaty between US and Italy to avoid double taxation, but their rates are so much higher than ours. Would it have been worth moving to a town within 7% guidelines, or is the extra tax not very significant? Looking to do as you are doing is reason I ask.
