Fraser, I think Welsh hymns "do it" for me better than all the others!
That was beautiful Fraser, thanks for sharing your wonderful gift with us.
Favorite melody - "Old One Hundredth" as we refer to it here in New England.
I loved how you ended on exactly the same chord as ‘In Paradisum’ (transposed, perhaps, but the same seventh chord with the added ninth). The Duruflé Requiem is my favorite choral work, and when I first heard it, I listened to the recording over and over again for hours. Blaenwern is a great tune, and the Hymn of the Week videos are a great addition to the channel. Thank you!
Great music and amazing organist !
One of the organists at a church where I was Vicar told me this hymn tune was originally written as a wedding gift for his parents whose house was named Blaenwern (in Swansea.)
😊 Hello Fraser 👋 ☺, for me it's the Ave Maria, and Our Father ❤ ..
I love Blaenwern, my wife and I chose it for our wedding. My favourite hymn is Praise my Soul the King of Heaven, because every verse has a different harmonic sequence.
Wow wow wow … that was one amazing sonic journey! Wonderful wonderful wonderful 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I grew up Methodist with Hyfrydol - Wesly's " Love Divine" and love both tunes equally
Some hymn tunes remind you of when you first heard them or of special events. This tune reminds me of when I used to ride aid trucks across Europe, in particular it sounds (to me) like going up and down the gearbox as we crossed the Carpathian mountains. A different tune would be more appropriate for the mad dash along the A3 through the Westerwald.
I love the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, growing up listening entranced to my Dad's LPs of Thomas Tallis, Greensleeves, Flos Campi and others. I think my favourite hymn must be For All The Saints (Sine Nomine). It's not as harmonically complex and lovely as many of other VW works are, but I remember belting it out at the top of my lungs at school with a fervour I rarely get to express these days.
Love this series. you've hit most of my favourites so far. As a brass player nothing better than a nice descant and deep tuba sounds. Must say that Abide with Me or Crown Him With Many Crowns are my top 2 though
Anglikanische Melodien sind mir ziemlich unbekannt aber faszinierend
Excellent and Glorious. Thank you Fraser.
I play this tune a lot at our small village church, with various spontaneous "themes and variations"
with improvisations, for our organ "Gathering Preludes". It always works well.
I'm as far as all-time favorites, I'm partial to Mendelssohn (Hark the Herald Angels Sing), Easter Hymn, and Thaxted. Honorable mention for the Celtic Alleluia - I'll never get tired of that one...as long as it's played at the right tempo.
Agreed, the Duruflé Requiem is the best, VERBESSERT, piece of music. I really like this hymn tune and have used it on occasion here in the US in lieu of Hyfrydol for "Love Divine", such a lovely harmonisation/improvisation.
Perfect pronunciation, Mr Gartshore, and wonderful arranging and playing, as always. Ardderchog! (Excellent!)
Big fan of Ellacombe, Coen Fen, Jerusalem, and Salve Regina Caelitum.
👍👍😊😊
Congratulations on 50,000 subscribers!! Widor time >:))
Thank you, Fraser, for this great piece of music. Excellent, and most of all I like the way you arrange and perform on the wonderful organ of Billerbeck. The range starting at the soft sounds to pulling all the stops and returning to the calming tunes played by you is breathtaking. Thank you 🙏 ❤❤❤
Fantastic, one of my favourite tunes. Sung a lot at school and guess what, was played at my wedding.
Excellent, enjoyed that, now off onto a catch up journey!!!!
Magnificent rendition of it Fraser. Much loved by me as you might imagine! Played at many significant events in my life. Pronunciation is OK too and you can let the Scottish in you rip
by rolling the R a little. 😂
Your pronunciation of BLAENWERN is very good - I write from Wales and I have the belief (as a former Englishman - married to Welsh’s girl for 50 years) that Welsh hymn tunes are the best!
Thanks. Very nice arrangement. Occasionally listen to this and Hyfrydol to remind me of my Dad. Both bring out the awesome power of the pipe organ.
Incredible what 'little' organs can do these days. Almost impossible to tell you're not listening to a room sized cathedral organ at times.
My favorite hymn is the Hymna Ceska, Kde Domov Muj.
Thanks Fraser
Btw when are you going to start going out and touring organs again?
Wunderbar vorgetragen.
The copyright on this tune passed to one of the composer’s relatives. During the pandemic I used this tune on a UA-cam video and my right to use the tune was challenged. I had to contact the copyright owner only to find that he had died but his widow told me that before he died he released the tune from copyright so it is now public domain.
Interesting that it may have been used for a more ‘gospel’ hymn in America. In Wales, it’s an alternative tune for ‘Calon Lan’, another hymn with an ordinarily upbeat tune.
Hallo Fraser, ich bin wieder von der Reise zurück. 😊
Willkommen zurück!
Julion by David Hurd. Also Mendelssohn’s graceful cantata Verleih uns Frieden.
Not being popular in America - is probably to its credit (runs and ducks for cover...)
Good Tenor line - which I can still reach - so that's OK
