I want to thank you for your informative videos. Nothing flowery, just good, frank advice to anyone looking to move. We are planning to move near the end of this year. Both my wife and I are retired (we also are an interracial couple), and my son will be working remotely. We have been to Portugal twice over the last two years for a little over 3 weeks each and are aware of the up and down sides that you’ve mentioned before. We love the pace, the people, the food, the sense of community, and the culture. Coming form the SF Bay Area it will be an interesting change, but we are looking forward to this new chapter, coming in with “eyes wide open”, and desiring to add what we can to the local community and immerse ourselves into “regular” Portuguese life.

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy them. Yes we try to provide a realistic view of the sparkly diamond you can read from the media :) We hope to contribute a bit to a more balanced view on things

What was the reason the insurance company gave for not covering your maternity care? Do you have to stay in Portugal for a certain amount of time before private health insurance companies will cover maternity care?

Don't know who gave you the information but All costs are covered by the SNS, and you can get the número de utente when you have a residence permit, or your adress certificate if you are a EU citizen and don't need visas (temporary numbers are for extraordinary situations and should not be used). There's an ongoing investigation on networks of illegal immigration on late stages of pregnancy to give birth in PT because it's free and safe. And always remember that private it's for hospitality, if something serious happens you will be shipped to a public hospital. That said, yes SNS is under stress, so is NHS and there are waiting times, but following the procedures saves you time and anxiety meaning call the SNS line or 112 instead of driving to the nearest hospital.

I think it might be an additional gift to those of us who came under the withdrawal agreement on British passports :-) But at least, that's the process for us. Centro de Saude had contact the ministry of Health to get an approval, which we then received afterwards.

@@HyggeJourney Strange, but those times where a bit messy on both sides. As we say "não é carne nem peixe" (it's neither meat or fish), so we are in limbo

Great video… I do have a question though. What in the world is gas & air? 19:20

"Gas and air (Entonox) for labour
This is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas. Gas and air will not remove all the pain, but it can help reduce it and make it more bearable. It's easy to use and you control it yourself. You breathe in the gas and air through a mask or mouthpiece, which you hold yourself."

@@HyggeJourney Thank you for explaining!!!I’ve never heard of such a thing. Of course, I had my child a very long time ago (she might be your age), but also I’m from Canada. I will have to ask if they do that over here now. I was married & living in the US when I had her, but most of my friends had their babies back here… I’m guessing that just wasn’t a thing back then.

@@HyggeJourney I just looked it up. They call it laughing gas here… more commonly used at dentists. I’ve never used it.
Apparently it is becoming more commonly available for Labour & Delivery… in the 2000’s. Well after anyone I know had children. I’ll have to ask my daughter’s friends who have children!!
It was noted in the articles I read, that it’s still not a really common practice here.

We can’t answer this as we came as EU citizens so we never needed to apply for a visa.
Try some of the Facebook groups

Can I ask who you were insured with or did you change insurers after the experience with your insurance company?

    • @HyggeJourney
      @HyggeJourney  Рік тому +2

Yes we did change. The original one was Médis. We are trying Allianz right now but it’s not amazing. So at this point I don’t have enough data to come with a serious recommendation

Would it be possible to share your Medis plan name ? Turns out we also have Medis and my wife is 8 weeks pregnant. I suspect we must be somewhere nearby. We live in Torres Vedras.
Looking forward to hear back. This migh be complecated now. 😥

The time it takes, the energy it takes, I’m better off just making the money and share my experiences so others can be better prepared 😃
