Marvel sold them the spider-man film rights, they own him out right. The director and writers messed this up. realizing they couldnt put him in it because of the time line the had and sony had to re shoot so much to cover the mistake. Thats why the over dubs dont line up in alot of scenes.
What now? First off the premise is wrong as the selling and owning are the wrong legal teems here. Once Sony stops using these rights they fall back to Marvel/Disney. And we are only talking about the rights to use him in movies. Secondly you might want to check out the New Rockstars breakdown as they have a better theory about the ADR.
@@michaelklaus it was stated Marvel sold the Spider-Man movie rights to sony in perpetuity for 7Mill in the late 1990s. Marvel was hemoraging money and on the verge of bankruptcy. Universal gaining the film rights to any solo incredible hulk films. Marvel was able to buy back the rights to characters like Iron man, blade. And captain america previous to the sale to Disney. As for Madame Web. Sony had performed reshoots to remove references to the originally planned 1990s setting of the film, which was intended to have Andrew Garfield's version of Peter Parker make a cameo. Sony then decided to instead have this be Tom Holland's version of the character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man films. Moving the time line too 2003. Yeah, a lot of people are talking about Kraven and Morbius without knowing anything about them, Kraven gave one of Spidermans greatest comics and Morbius is literally a stand alone character in the comics.
IronMan wasn't a super well known comic book character. Marvel just lucked out and got a good movie out of it. Sony is trying to do the same with Spiderman's B, C, and D level characters.. hoping to get lucky and start a franchise of their own. There's a slim chance Sony will give / sell Spiderman (and all related characters) fully back to Marvel / Disney.
well...no. iron man is not a side character, he is an avenger. morbius, madame web and kraven are literally side characters to spiderman. they cant simply exist in their own universe with no attachment to spiderman or else people dont give a shit about them.

@@FreakingSpies It is not the case that the Avengers were these "B-tier" heroes you trying to make them out to be. The Avengers, Spiderman, Hulk, Fantastic Four and X-Men have been the face of Marvel for 3 decades. These have been the most recognizable characters of the Marvel comics to non-comic book readers (which will determine how profitable live actions are). You can't make a successful movie on the backs of the comic book audience (not big enough). You need to pull in non-readers. Its also the case that Iron Man was chosen to kick start the MCU due to their predictions on profitability. Batman was popular at the time and the Iron Man's suit would sell toys. Standalone doesn't necessarily mean it's unconnected to other films. It can just mean that it'll have no sequels or spinoffs. For example, I'm pretty sure you can think of Logan as a standalone film even though it does reference the other X-Men films.
Sometimes it’s better you be clear and honest in advance. And if it’s a good movie it’ll find success. And Kraven is one of the most famous Spiderman villains, you don’t know much of Spiderman I guess hahahaha
Morbius is more known than Kraven and his movie did horribly. A general audience has no idea who Kraven is, he's not even top 5 Spiderman villain. You can actually make a case he's not even top 10 and if he is, he's number 10. Most famous Spidey villain lol over who?
Actually Morbius is insanely popular on his own, it's just that no one knows how to write for him, remember he actually had his own comic for awhile as part of the Midnight Sons
A spinoff movie about a B-tier Spiderman character? What were they thinking dude, I don't even know who Madam Web is, I just gathered some context clues from the other comments. Why dont they just make movies about characters people actually know like one of the X-Men (Cyclops, Phoenix, Beast, Storm) or Magneto or Doctor Doom... but I guess Madam Webb must be a pretty popular character to get her own show.
She isn't....Even among Spidey fans she's like....Turbo niche. She was only relevant to Speiderverse content, not mainline Spiderman stories until really really recently. the character was originally an old ass lady too, but she died and passed her tittle on to the current one....Who while she now has her own comic run and is starting to do better, is still far, FAR from a popular character. I....Legit dont know where they got the idea for this.
The best marketing for the film would've been to tell people it's a comedy, then they wouldn't be so confused as to why everyone in the theater is laughing at it.
I have no idea why suits thought that in the Marvel Sony deal that they could make Spider-Man villian solo films removed from Spider-Man. It's mind-boggling how corporate vampires are allowed near creative decisions.
If you’re going to make a movie based on a fan-favorite, yet ultimately not very popular character, the literal worst thing you could do is also change the character to the point where they’re unrecognizable to the few fans they have.
The other option would be to actually make a good movie, but that's just me I guess. Good idea to make a Madame web movie, however people that actually like spiderman, will hate it.
Me when they change at the last second how the movie connects with the rest of the movies and despite it settting up the new spiderman in the venom verse initially it was so bad sony had to retcon that plan.
Eddie without Peter is just strange for me. It would be better if there was a Black Cat movie, or perhaps Jackal to bring in some strong interest. I personally would love to see the clones happen. Would be awesome.
The worst thing Madame Web did, was put disrespect on Mrs. Joan Lee’s legacy from being so horrible. She’s the only one I’ll ever remember, when thinking of the character.
I agree with the most part except... I think it's better for people to be told to have no expectations at the start because without it EVERYONE will come in with some kind of expectation. Sony is obviously playing stupid. Fans WANT Andrew Garfield to come back in any way or form. and thats whats going to get them even more box office than even tom the tom holland movies. They just dont seem to get it
100%
I honestly don't get why anyone wants him back. The three spiderman movies he was in also happen to be the three worst.
@@breakfaith3031 I mean he was ok but I personally don't give a crap if he comes back or not lol
@@TNFStudioz honestly I really don't either. At this point I'm so burned out on marvel and Sony superhero films that I don't even care that Hugh Jackman is in deadpool 3.
Have you actually watched TASM2?
They could have introduced Madame Web in the Spiderverse movies before doing this.
Do you know what pisses me off the fact that the Madame web team like the people with the spider powers they don’t have proper masks you can clearly see their identity it just makes no sense
They missed an enormous opportunity here! SPOILERS!!!
Apparently Cassandra webb was a Medic and her co worker is Ben Parker! He mentions that his brother is on some kind of trip and he's attending his sister in law's baby shower, The baby is born and its a boy! The camera zooms out with a little bit of spider web outside of the window, Forshadowing a future hero!
They could have done something similar to what was done in Joker 2019, When Arthur met Bruce!
None of these villains are stand alone because they’re all villains to a hero, Spider-Man/woman. It’s like Darth Vader, one of the most iconic villains in history, having a stand alone film without referencing Obi-Wan or any Jedi, you just can’t do it. The Joker film still references Batman by introducing Bruce Wayne as a kid. Heath Ledgers joker said it best “I don’t want to kill you, what would I do without you… You complete me!” Joker would just be some crazy criminal on the streets without Batman.
Madam Web isn’t a villain bozo…
@@brandonotero9483 She’s not a hero either, she uses her mutant abilities to aid Spider-Man but she isn’t a hero like Spider-Man is using her abilities for the greater good. So if you’re not a hero, and you’re not a villain, then you’re not anything… Bozo 🤣
While I completely agree. I would totally watch a Darth Tater movie.
@@WeekndWarriorrr Now that’s something I could go forward with.
Definitely forgot about this lol
My expectations were low, but they went out the window when I caught the villains voice is dubbed. How this became #1 on netflix is a mystery to me.
Knock Knock. Who's there? Madame. Madame who? Madame web is caught in the door.
They had their chance at Spiderman. And X-Men.
They had their chance at their own cinematic universe. Stand alones with lesser known characters is what they have.
You have to be pretty well versed in the spider-man universe in order to know anything about madame web. Most people, if they know anything at all; have only seen Madame Web on the 90's cartoon whenever she made a cameo like when spider-man fought venom and carnage to stop dormammu with doctor strange.
If you remember the back story provided in Amazing Spider-Man 1&2 about Peter’s parents, you knew there was absolutely no connection. Also, doesn’t Madame Web take place in like 2003? Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man takes place in like 2011-2012. How would that be the same Spider-Man??? It was all bullshit and they knew that.
Tobey Spiderman maybe. I think
If they change it..
"SPIDERMAN Chronicles Madam web"
well, nobody really knew who the guardians of the galaxy were until the movie came along
Those characters are not tethered to a major character for their existence. They’re also way more kid friendly, talking tree and raccoon. That’s all I have to say.
Hear me out.
She becomes madame webb, she ends up getting the spider curse of inevitable depression, the 3 she was trying to protect die, dispite ALLLLL her efforts AND abilities of clairvoyance. It makes her take being a spider person waaay more seriously, and BOOM suddenly peter.
From there, have her guide him through the spider verse and make it so she becomes a cool mentor with their own mission with an open end, so theres potential for her own cinimatic universe where she sees herself old and learns it was her and tries to fight, and inevitably accept, that she will be the one to weave and care for the web of spider realities.
Sony owns the film and tv rights to Spider-Man and the associated characters in his universe, some 900 characters. They also sold the Hulk copyright to Terry Hogan for 750grand.
Thats different sets of reshoots and ADR to eliminate any mention of spider-man as he was a new born in the film.
Sorry if I didn't want to use wordy legal jargon. Hope that helps clearify.
They have usage rights, they don't own him they are renting the ability to make Sony spider verse films. Smdh get your facts straight.
@@Leviathan2dead2die Marvel going bankruot in the late 90s early 00s sold the film and television right to sony for 7million in perpetuity (which included some 900 side characters) selling the incredible Hulk to Universal in perpetuity, for SOLO HULK FILMS.
Marvel sold the Hulk name rights to Terry Hogan for 750,000 as well. Marvel sold Blade and Ironman to artisan ent. They were able to buy back some characters partially thanks to a loan from Meryl Lynch which the put Captain America, Thor and black panther up as collateral.
( just so I know for next time. Exactly how do you want it worded.)
As for Madem web Andrew Garfield was going to be the Sony Spider-man until they realized it didn't line up time wise then durring reshoots realized they couldn't line up with the MCU tom Holland version either not wanting to destroy the connection to the mcu films Sony again had to do more re shoots (that's 2xs) to erase any mention of spiderman in they're film making it stand alone. (I can get exact and use legal jargon and start siting sources like Film threat, screenrant and CNNMoney and others but it's all public knowledge)
One thing I hate is shitty ADR, was going to give this a go but for the life of me I cannot sit through bad ADR.
Kraven from PS5 is amazing 🙌🏻🔥🔥
Second favorite part of that game, and flat out my favorite character of the game
I think it's better this way. Obviously not for them (sales, marketing, etc.) but for the potential audience and their expectations.
I only knew madame web from Shattered Dimensions.
Now she gets a movie!!
If Garfield comes back Sony better hired Marvel writers for him because Sony Dialog for Spidey sucks. The writers for NWH made Garfield Spider-man way better. It was the only reason people finally realize how funny Garfield really is.
He was easily the worst part of no way home
Tbh. I didn't hate this film as much as others did. There was quite a few things I didn't like about it, I also enjoyed my experience for the most part
I never even heard of madam web until now
I don't have any comic books. Madame Web's character was featured in "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" back in 1994. I'm guessing that most of us in this thread know of her through that series. She was a central character in the "Sins of the Father" episodes.
That black suit and the whole film, feels like a reference to the Thai 2006 superhero movie " Mercury man "
“Trying to explain the world instead of letting the audience experience it”
Man you hit the nail on the head!!! I was just thinking that this morning how all the exposition was unnecessary. The opening trailer line: my mom was researching spiders right before she died. Why not just let us see it? It sounds ultra corny said out loud 🤦🏽
I'm actually a huge kraven the hunter fan and would love a good origin movie to introduce him into the universe
Comparing Iron Man, who is an Avenger and not only that, and incredibly charismatic, rich, intelligent character, to a bunch of spiderman add-ons, is crazy.
Not only that the premise of tony stark and iron man make for an infinitely more profitable character than something like madam web
@@michael2968The Avengers were very unpopular for a long time I hate to break it to you, and Kraven has given probably Spidermans best comic, and morbius is literally a stand alone character in the comics, God people need to stop talking about shit they don't know. The only one you're right about is Madam but that's because literally no one gives a fuck about her and ita obvious.
@@brunolopes2205And same for you.
You can't say any of this for what Sony is trying to do.
Madame Web was cool AF. I want to see a trilogy of them.
Sony really making Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man
They are great supporting characters or villains that don't need their own movies.
They could have a good 5 to 10 minutes explaining why they are who they are.
"Explaining things rather than just show the audience" Anime in a nutshell lol
A kraven movie could be good, if it had Spider-Man and venom in it
Well, in captain america movie was still good when it didn't had hulk and ironman on it... Meaning to say, these movies are great preferences for future avenger movies...
@elmergacita5288 What OP is saying these characters aren't ready for a stand alone movie due to missing the key player: Spider-Man. That's why Black Adam failed.
@@FooeyMcgooeyMorbius literally is a stand alone character, that's why he had his own comic series that was actually pretty good. It's just Sony didn't know how to use him clearly.
@@FreakingSpies and that's my issue with Sony. They can have two versions of the same movie for Theatre and VOD, Rated PG-13 and Rated R. Make the movie as a Rated R film and edit the movie as a secondary into PG-13.
All they had to do was give Andrew Garfield some good screen-time, even it’s just as a mentor to Spider-Woman that would have put buts in seats!
They couldn't because the time frame was not right which was discovered during the filming of the movie. But that spiderman was there as a baby.
Why would you want him in this trash film?
Yes bring in Andrew’s Spider-Man when baby Peter was being born in this movie, Buncha stupid fuck knuckles
@@docneedles69actually, that Spider-Man wasn’t even born when the movie took place
@@gogetablack5384 technically he was there at the end as a baby
They needed to commit to there being a second move. Uncle Ben's casting is perfect
Madame Web could’ve worked as an origin if she was introduced aged up prior to this and when that movie takes place. I honestly feel so bad for the talent that was cast. It could’ve worked if Sony wasnt so grimy
Standalone doesn't necessarily mean it's unconnected to other films. It can just mean that it'll have no sequels or spinoffs. For example, I'm pretty sure you can think of Logan as a standalone film even though it does reference the other X-Men films.
if that's what it means then it was an absolute waste of money and time for a movie rofl
NOTHING HAPPENED IN IT
Sometimes it’s better you be clear and honest in advance. And if it’s a good movie it’ll find success. And Kraven is one of the most famous Spiderman villains, you don’t know much of Spiderman I guess hahahaha
He’s speaking for the general audience regarding Kraven, why you so quick to hate on Jon?
Morbius is more known than Kraven and his movie did horribly. A general audience has no idea who Kraven is, he's not even top 5 Spiderman villain. You can actually make a case he's not even top 10 and if he is, he's number 10. Most famous Spidey villain lol over who?
Bro I didn't even know who Kraven is lol
Yeah I thought kravenwas a stand alone movie didn't know it was connected to spidey
Trailer seems cool thou better than madame webb
One of the most famous??
Naa
Not even close
I don’t know. I feel like I’ve seen this before. Dakota Johnson being chased by a muscular guy in a gimp (spider) suit......
Actually Morbius is insanely popular on his own, it's just that no one knows how to write for him, remember he actually had his own comic for awhile as part of the Midnight Sons
The marketing dept are not storytellers (in the strictest sense). They shouldn't try to world-build.
A beast movie would be awesome
Even Before Spider-Man 2 PS5 I’ve Been A Kraven Fan Mostly Because I’m A Wolverine Fan & Kraven Reminds Me Of His Arch Enemy Sabertooth
Wdym. We all got a bit of Morbin' in our time. He may not have been a mayor hit but it had a mf good impact.
You know, if Marvel gave us an origin story movie for Kraven, we would EAT THAT SHIT UP!
Sony were the ones that said that people only care about spiderman. And are surprised when their non spiderman movies flop
..and especially because this movie feels like a prologue for something to come.
Never even heard of Madame web before, same with Kraven, and Morbius prior to that movie.
She was such an obscure as character to even make a movie for that it was bound to fail
My expectations weren’t what I saw
Seems like the bright burn spiderman
Madame web will lead to one of the important moments in the comics in where eddy sacrifices anti venom to cure everyone of the spider sickness
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SHOW! The lore would have lored more lol
What? Kraven is like an s-tier spidey villain, since when is he not that popular on his own?
The best marketing for the film would've been to tell people it's a comedy, then they wouldn't be so confused as to why everyone in the theater is laughing at it.
I have no idea why suits thought that in the Marvel Sony deal that they could make Spider-Man villian solo films removed from Spider-Man.
It's mind-boggling how corporate vampires are allowed near creative decisions.
They never even became spider people. Shit was like a babysitters guide to being a spider.
If you’re going to make a movie based on a fan-favorite, yet ultimately not very popular character, the literal worst thing you could do is also change the character to the point where they’re unrecognizable to the few fans they have.
A green goblin spin off may have worked, maybe even sandman if we stretch for it
The other option would be to actually make a good movie, but that's just me I guess.
Good idea to make a Madame web movie, however people that actually like spiderman, will hate it.
They should've animated it tbh
Me when they change at the last second how the movie connects with the rest of the movies and despite it settting up the new spiderman in the venom verse initially it was so bad sony had to retcon that plan.
that movies marketing made me bricked up
Saying people don’t know Morbius is crazy
Eddie without Peter is just strange for me. It would be better if there was a Black Cat movie, or perhaps Jackal to bring in some strong interest. I personally would love to see the clones happen. Would be awesome.
The worst thing Madame Web did, was put disrespect on Mrs. Joan Lee’s legacy from being so horrible. She’s the only one I’ll ever remember, when thinking of the character.
Tom Holland called no way home stand alone before it came out
Spiderman Characters should be in Spider-Man movies more than their own standalones.
It doesn’t help that the antagonist looks like Spider-Man
I agree with the most part except... I think it's better for people to be told to have no expectations at the start because without it EVERYONE will come in with some kind of expectation. IMO, the statement "I came into this with no expectations" tends to be BS because they proceed to contradict this soon after with a statement that shows a clear expectation (like I "wanted", or I "hoped")
You generate interest by introducing the concept gradually, not dumping a whole story and expecting an audience
Thing is This movie was defenitly made for a young peter to be protected
The kraven movie is the origin story of how kraven became what he is
Kraven is definitely popular enough on his own
