Can I ask a question - a. can I use a gas bottle flame to temper the bits? And b. what oil are you using?

If you're planning on doing this, know that some drill bits have a low carbon shank friction welded to the part of the drill that has the flutes.

You could also make stamping tools for working with leather, copper or brass.

Possibly, not sure whether the type of steel is good for pounding on tho'. Drill bits are typically made from high speed steel which are quite hard but brittle. Pounding may well cause them to shatter.

What was the point of the blow torch? I am sure there's a reason, but I am a novice. Was he dipping it into water after or something else?

    • @dexaphobia8085

He was heating it up with a torch and dipping it in oil to quench it.
Quenching helps harden steel so that it dulls more slowly.

He did a beautiful job with everything accept for tempering it....He tempered it till the colors ran blue which is a sign he lost the hardness of the quench...but everything else was beautiful
