This is one of my fav Buddy Rich charts.
After lstening to various bands scuffling on youtube covers, this one stands out. This is an excellent drummer, who puts his unique personal stamp on the piece. Originality is a quality that Buddy cherished. Also, this band should be commended for playing the chart masterly, leaning more towards the latin element of the swing/latin hybrid qualities of the song.
    I really enjoyed this one.

Andrew Chaplowitz considering the drummer is a metal and experimental music master, it's even more impressive :)

Thank you, I never would have guessed his genre of metal from the way he played this chart.

well that was not that obvious. But honestly, the variety of genres is unbelievable. He played with Steven wilson (prog rock), the aristocrats (Jazz rock), necrophagist (Technical Death Metal), his solo stuff (experimental music, but touches pretty musch every genre ever), Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (shred)... and a Jazz Big Band, and probably many others that i forget

The tempo is "spot on". Played this chart many times, lead alto, award winning big band in Iowa.

good musicians, but sounds like they're sleepwalking compared to the Buddy version. Once you're used to the Buddy version of a chart, its hard to listen to anyone else play it. That's why he's Buddy

This is why he didn't won the audition for Dream Theater (And I'm a big DT fan) ... He's too great for them, check out that swing!

@richcapo Just watched Rich playing this chart, per your suggestion. Other than the blinding speed at which Rich's band played this chart, the most notable difference is the way Rich pushes the feel. That guy could drive the bus! Minneman is like a passenger, almost dragging at times. The breaks are great and all, but there is a huge difference in the fundamental feel. A great comparo. Thanks for pointing it out.

I see the great Bobby Shew in the tpt section. He was on the original recording live from the Chez. And is that Matt Harris at the piano? (Buddy's last pianist)

@richcapo , I'm not angry. I'm just pissed off to see the same comments over and over and over...
In this video, Marco didn't want to be as good as Buddy Rich...He just wanted to have fun while playing his OWN version of this tune. So, why did you bash him ? and what the fuck about Virgil...
I don't understand this kind of reaction...unless if you are 7yrs old and have no knowledge ;)

  • @pgoindi
    @pgoindi 13 років тому

@richcapo I agree that Rich was and remains in a league of his own. He is the single greatest drummer ever, regardless of genre. As difficult as it is to state absolutes, especially in art, I think there are very few informed drummers who would have him below their top three.

@richcapo You obviously have no idea of how greatly skilled this drummer is. Do me and yourself a favor and watch some of marco minneman's drumming from his dvd. Way more independence that 95% of all other drummers out there. And this guy has played for one of the heaviest and more technical heavy metal bands out there. This guy lacks nothing of what you listed. Sorry bud. Your wrong.

Yes. He was a member of Buddy's band back in the 1960s.

Way too choppy. Just like when Neil peart tried to do it. Extremely hard tune to pull off thats why most dont. Great horn section! I think I see Bobby Shew who is world renown. Great band but the drummer is just not giving it the feel it needs to flow.

Yeah, we know but schemas can be broken... He's a great/famous/drummer... So, who cares if he is not hired again at this gig; this was just for a DW video... It's a really really great Groove he has, out of conventionality.... Fresh and Creative, Choppy; yeah, but sounds very cool, whoever who appreciate a good musician knows it, or maybe not because of the way of musicality everyone has developed, it's matter of what you like most... It's a completely jazz context, but it's a Brand new remake

@DeadlyNinjaDrummer Minneman has ridiculous independence. I actually don't think swing requires it. To the contrary, in fact. I think swing requires great dependence where the hands and feet work together to create one clearly identifiable feel. To my surprise, on listening to this, I don't think MM has it. He's a technically superb drummer, but he ain't got the swing.

This is sad. Minneman drags the time.

  • @beedoe51

Tempo drags compared to Buddy's version, also too much emphasis on the half time feel. Not bad but it just doesn't have the zip...

@rtfrancis2002 Yo ya ever hear the album" big swing face" by Buddy Rich? Llisten to it then eat crow. This band is tight and the tempo isn't dragging at all. Shut the hell up all you fools who can do no better. I've been playing jazz for 43 years. More listening less posting,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Yayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

    Marco,
Please man, you and Peart should stick to what you do best, and it is NOT Jazz. You are a great drummer when your doing your thing........................Big Band Jazz is NOT it. Listen to Erskine or Hamilton and let them play this bag man..................your not even close. You are a little better than Peart, but not much............sorry, no hate intended and i do love your other stuff
