    I feel totally honoured to get a such a great response video! And what a video, I was laughing throughout with a big smile! So many great points, like your "avoid filler list", I think I'll add that directly to mine. Spot on! Teenage Fanclub turned me on to Big Star as well. In fact Teenage Fanclub is one of my top bands from the 90s, I saw them opening for Nirvana in Stockholm in 1992, after that my life kinda changed.
    When it comes to the no compilation rule, I'll try to find the songs on the original singles instead. Why take the easy way and buy a best of-album when you can work hard to track down 10 singles? 😂
    Again Harris, thanks for this video, made my day. Cheers!

      Hey Jonas! Thanks for taking it in good humour. I thought yours was a great video! Amazing you saw Nirvana!...my Nirvana story is I bought ‘Bleach’ on day of release...on white vinyl! Yeah the weekly press kept saying Teenage Fanclub had ripped off Big Star..I think that’s harsh, Maybye ‘December’ and ‘What You Do For Me’....Grand Prix is one of my favourite albums ever. Yeah I’m a big compilation fan. I think it’s a U.K. thing, where it was very much a singles culture (remember Oasis V Blur, Park-life vs Roll With It) It probably all comes from The Beatle & The Stones who would put out amazing singles with great b-sides, so that carried on with The Jam, The Smiths etc. I think it’s just in the culture. Thanks again my friend! 😊

    I got that 2fer CD of Big Star in the early 90s as well, but even in NYC where I did my vinyl shopping, I NEVER saw a Big Star record, even a reissue. Let's not forget Nuggets is a comp, and essential! I may have bought the I, Jonathan CD AT the Jonathan Richman concert when he released it.

      Yes! I bought that CD as well if remember it didnt sound great? Hence why I headed to HMV Oxford Street & bought the vinyl. I had never heard of them until 92, but there were loads of copies in HMV. These were a 86 repress, so that they had sat around for 6 years. TBH HMV in London was an incredible shop, It was the biggest record shop in the world (I still believe that stands) the amount of vinyl they had was incredible..Tower which was about half a mile away pushed it pretty close....they were amazing days!

    I made 1 of the comments he responded to. My comment pointed out 2 or 3 “rules” that I think are detrimental to collecting records or cds, hence music. I have collected for over 55 yrs now and I have never lived in any major massive cities where OG’s are all around. I do love OG copies but also love new fresh remastered versions. 90% of my jazz collection would not exist if I waited for an OG press. These new “top tier” or well made remastered and 45’s are amazing and a huge part of my enjoyment. I believe that when you own higher end audio and appreciate quality reproduction then you understand the value of reissued recordings. Then there is the “no Greatest Hits or Compilations”, well that’s silly too as those can ignite or introduce you to new artists and music plus they are handy to have. Then last is simply NO RULES. We live with enough rules and laws thank you, don’t need any more. I am fortunate that most my records are OG because I bought them new decades ago or used decades ago 😝. Cheers. 🥂

    • @Harrispilton22
      @Harrispilton22  3 місяці тому

      Intersting thoughts about high end audio. I remember when I first started buying second hand vinyl in about 88. I was in a classic dump of a record shop, in the cities red light district...records stacked vertically everywhere, the sun blazing on the vinyl in the milk crates outside the shop. Run by washed up hippies. I was talking to the owners about hi-fi when this old Pink Floyd fan suddenly emerged and said ‘Once you’ve found a sound you’re happy with ...stop!’ then he sort of disappeared again! It was the best advise I’ve ever had. What you see behind me is an old battered Technics 1210, propped on a entry level Onkyo A9010 amp & two cheap Monitor audio speakers. That’s about a high end as I’m getting! Thanks for you comments, much appreciated! It’s the only reason I do these videos. 😊

Love a bit of KC , underrated really, at their peak they were a pretty well drilled band, the horn section on these two albums is dynamite. Cheers my friend! 😊

    I don’t really care too much about pressings. If I have a good sounding version for the most part I’m done. The best greatest hits is the Sly and the Family Stone. It is the only place to get Thank You Fa Lettin’ Me Be Myself Again unless you buy the single.
    Ambient is a bit of a snooze but I’m sure it works best on CD. Classical is also best on CD for the same reason.
    Those are the only KC albums I need.

    • @Harrispilton22
      @Harrispilton22  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi Ritchie, as long as they aren’t objectively’Bad’ pressings then I’m ok. But continuous surface noise is something I’ve had to put up with over the last few years & warping seems to be more common? Yeah I’ve got that Sly ‘Everybody Is A Star’ is my favourite, think that may have just been a single? It’s an almost perfect greatest hits. Cheers Ritchie!

    Very good points on original pressings. Original Smiths albums are fetishized in Toronto, so they sell for well above Discogs value. No comps is a bit limiting. Ambient is better on CD! I suppose Enpo's Thursday Afternoon works much better on CD since it is one track that is 61 minutes long 🙂 Isn't Coldplay all filler? As a Canadian, I cannot accept the Rush answer! I feel bad that I do not have any KC and the Sunshine Band.

    Swedish people aesthetically pleasing. Yep! Dolly should be Swedish.
    Well said "You never should have to explain yourself on YT". If they don't get it f...'em!
    It's the cost that is prohibitive for early pressings. Fortunately most people don't give a toss about Australian music so it's easy to still get at decent prices, but don't tell anyone. The Craft reissues of Big Star sound great. No comp's or best of's? That is just madness! Buy the format...good luck to all of the blues dudes finding cylinders and 78's. I, Jonathan is a corker. Filler is pretty subjective....but your list is pretty definitive. The VC really believes the hype. Can't say I'm definitely not a KC (The Ramones of disco 😂) completist.

    haha. Coldplay as a filler. I must agree with that. I think it's good if people just by albums they like and don't pay attention to rules. There are no rules. Imagine someone not having The Cure's "Standing on the Beach" because it's a greatest hits album? Or The Secret Policeman's Ball album. Just listen and buy what you like. Also, excellent point about first pressings. Young people can't even afford new records let alone first pressings of The Smiths !

  • @franksmusic2880
    @franksmusic2880 3 місяці тому

    I agree with you about the new reissues, outside of a few good ones that come out, most are not good. I always prefer original pressings, most of the records I’m selling from my collection are reissues where I found the og’s that sound better. One exception is the 2012 Smiths reissues, I think these are pretty good, I like the bottom end and they sound fuller than the US og’s. The US Sire label pressings were a little on the thin side, too bright sounding. I have almost a complete set of the 12” single eps from the UK and a few UK albums. The first two Smiths albums I think still sound very thin including the UK pressings that I own. Just my opinion, long time Smiths fan.

    • @Harrispilton22

      That’s interesting I’ve heard about those 2012 pressings being good. I bought Meat Is Murder on release, Definately the worst Smiths pressing I own sound wise., but my favourite Smiths album. I did something I never do & bought it again on a Portuguese pressing .a bit better. My repress of ‘Louder Than Bombs’ is hit & miss too, some of the tracks sound like they came from a dodgy source! I would have bought the first album year of release...certainly not amazing, but I always found it a bit disappointing anyway, as the hype around that album was huge after me & my mates had taped The Peel Sessions & had got caught up in the buzz, side one is a real mess imo, side 2...classic. Hi Steve. Compilations are very much a U.K. thing imo. We just seem to have a singles culture that didn’t really exist in the U.K. Probably because The Beatles & Stones were popping out endless singles & EP’s with incredible b-sides. Then you had The Jam & The Smiths who would often put their best songs on the flip side. Most of the big British bands bought on incredible b-side compilations, I can’t think of many American bands who have done that? ‘Singles Going Steady’ by The Buzzcocks has all the b-sides on side 2....& they are just a notch below the a-sides. It just seems to be something in the culture.

    Another superb video. There should only be a few points about any record collecting manifesto.
    1. Get the best version you can afford.
    2. By all means blind buy, but only keep stuff you like.
    3. Don't buy stuff you have no intention of playing.
    4. Manifesto's are for Futurists and Communists not vinyl collectors.😂

      Intersting Mike, as I have a bit more disposable cash at the moment (not for long) I am thinking of treating myself to a couple of first press grails..which chimes with your point 1. Scott 4 by Scott Walker & The debut by The Sound are two I’m eying up. But I’ve barely ever paid more than £30.00 for a record...those two go for some serious cash. Point 3 is a good one. I see it in the VC all the time. If I buy a record the intention is I would want to play it at least 20 times..doesn’t always work but that the intention. I think that’s why I buy the 12” singles now. Pretty cheap & I do tend to play them a lot!

    Hi Harris - I've never even considered buying releases by DJ Shadow , Thievery Corporation , Seefeel , FSOL , Death In Vegas & Harold Budd on vinyl. They are meant to be enjoyed uninterrupted & even Pure Phase by Spiritualized is best on cd with all the interludes. Scotland beat Hungary & they probably progress but problem is they probably won't beat Hungary. England look like a sure out in the quarters but of course could make " adjustments " On July 5th say .. Hello Labour 🌹!

    Fun, entertaining video! I saw that video and agree with a lot of what you say. One thing I’ll call out as a collector of 1st pressings, they aren’t always the best sounding. Modern mastering from AAA can rival some OGs. This is why I’ve been converting to collecting definitive pressings rather than 1st.
    The compa thing is just bonkers. There are so many killer comp albums I don’t know how you not grab some. How can you go without Saturday Night Fever? 😉

      Yes. It may be an age thing, I worked in HMV 88/89....there was really no such thing as a bad pressing. Pressings 99.9% of the time sounded great. We had some Mo-Fi pressings...stuff like Floyd/Beatles...we literally didnt sell any in those two years I was there...people didnt really care, they knew the £7.99 pressing would sound fine. Nowadays (as explained in this video) many standard pressings are substandard...therfeore it feels that the only way to get something half decent is to but the Mo-Fi...which can be £100.00 plus.....with the experience I have I kind of resent that....I guess its become a principal for me! Thanks for watching

      @@Harrispilton22 Well, that does give me something to ponder. What *was* it back then? Was it that we were too young to care and simply just grateful to have a new album by an artist we loved? Or has technology advanced itself so much over the years that now we can actually hear the differences between certain pressings? When I was a young lad, I had a fairly inexpensive record player and I would purchase records without caring about labels, mastering, or pressing plants. Today, I prioritize what I purchased around these things. Is that personal evolution, technical innovation, or a combination of both? I have no idea. But I can tell you one thing, when I play a record on our Victrola Stream which connects to the house's Sonos system, I can't tell the difference from a bad pressing to a UHQR. But, drop the records on the Rega P10 and it's a whole different world.

    I watched the video by Jonas and I really enjoyed it even though I mostly don't collect records the same way he does.
    I think Swedes sound so sincere to non-Swedes that some people missed the humour and irony in his presentation of his "manifesto". A similar thing happens with us Canadians. Many non-Canadians think we're very polite, but we're incredibly sarcastic bastards a lot of the time, even when it sounds like we're being nice.
    I have to admit that there's merit in his restrictive approach to collecting. I'm running out of space to put records because of my casual approach.

      I love Sweden. Wonderful country, & like many Nordic countries the governments fund the arts.....which used to happen in the U.K...but things are rapidly going downhill..since Brexit not coincidentally. I’ve always found Nordic people incredibly kind & open minded. Yes the U.K. is pretty famous for its sarcasm..which I think occasionally comes over in my videos, but it’s all done in love! If the Brits take the piss out of you, then it normally means you’ve won us over! We’re simple folk over here..give us alchohol & an excuse for a knees up..and we’re pretty happy! 😂

    Well Harris that might be good advice for some but I beg to differ. Now don’t misunderstand I do believe that if you happy or satisfied with your audio performance then great but….. as a person actually experiences better audio equipment they hear how much was missing from the inferior audio. I just think if a person is spending so much money on their music collection then it stands to reason they should spend a bit on the equipment they use to hear their music. I know that 90% of music collectors think high end means wasting $$ on some snake oil. Then the same people understand the difference and benefits of owning/driving high performance cars ???I am fortunate enough to not be one of those collectors.
