  • How to know if your cat loves you. How do we know that they love us and aren’t just tolerating our presence?
Many people claim that cats are cold and aloof compared to dogs because cats are generally more reserved when it comes to showing affection. However, it could be something as simple as learning to read your cat’s body language.

I was never a "cat" guy. But I had a black cat on the front step of the house I was building every night I came to check on it. We ended up keeping him. I believe he used to be a house cat and lived with a dog. He was some little girls cat as he would only come to a girls voice and hated guys voices. When we decided to let him in the house, We gave him a bath and I had to hold him in the tub while my wife bathed him. He didn't like it of course and I thought he'd hate me forever. But I took him out of the tub after his bath, and dried him with a towel. He was my best buddy ever since. Talks to me all the time, follows me everywhere. He even wants me to "Hunt' With him as he will try to get me to go with him in the garage and lead me to where he thinks the mouse is. He won't leave me alone and does this for me to help him get the mouse. One morning I came into the garage and he came prancing across the garage, tail straight in the air, with a mouse in his mouth to me. Dropped it at my feet and rolled around all proud. Love him to death now. Named him "Shadow" since he's a black cat and has to be with me ALL the time.

If a “BLACK” cat comes to you, that is a very good thing! They say that if a black cat comes to you, that is good luck! So…good for you! I love black cats! Two have come to me and stayed until it was time for them to go. They decide that too. So now I’m waiting for #3…& I can’t wait! I always seem to have 3 kitties, the 3rd always is a black cat. So once again in my life, I’m at that stage again where I’m ready for my next black cat to come to me. I’ll let you know when it happens. :) ❤

I have had cats throughout my life since childhood, but my current lady, a black rescue, has outdone them all. Her IQ alone is sometimes scary and her affectionate "personality" is beyond words. I sometimes think her affection is her way of thanking me for adopting her from the rescue shelter, but many times I have to ask myself, who rescued who? Not everyone is a cat lover, but those of us who do love them are usually rewarded handsomely in return.

@@jaeshasway I rescued Aliyah six years ago and she was semi feral, as well. Some lady had her house foreclosed, so she just left. Once the bank was authorized to enter the house they found over sixty cats inside and roughly a dozen of them were dead. I had her for several weeks before she would come out in the open and a couple of months before she would allow me to pick her up. Now, I'm not allowed to have a chair to myself. She's a spoiled little butt.

I had a stray cat when I was a kid. She'd come by the house for 5 years straight until her passing, and I distinctly remember the last time I held her, she did a slow blink at me. She let me cradle her in my arms. I never saw her after that, but if I ever had any doubt of her love for me, I remember that day.

~ Such a beatific recollection, something unique to you in the book of your life. That little feline accepted you, averting her feral state for the sake of creating a very vivid connection with you, you & nobody else in this wide world. Say a prayer for her . . . she probably still remembers you. While romping in golden fields & slinking among the hinterlands of where she resides, she may even be patiently waiting for you even now. Years from now, when awash with white light ~ there may be a wavering tailed, 4 footed friend of younger years there to greet you.
Thank you for this remembrance. It had meaning.

      So true.
I have a 7 month old kitten and he is the most affectionate animal I have ever come across.
He is like a little black dog. Comes running when you call him.
He is waiting at the door when I come home.
He snuggles when we watch TV.
And he purrs constantly when you pick him up.
      It’s just adorable.

Yep. All The Things On The Checklist My Rescued Cat Does. For A While I Wondered If I Had Raised My Cat Well. He Was An Outdoor In -14° Rescue, And Was Abused (From Neighbor Stories) And Kicked Out Because They Didn't Want To Clean The Litter Box... So The Baby Was Hiding In A Basement, A Friend Lured Him With Food Into A Warm House, Then We Took Him Home. He Was Wild & Angry, Probably Tense & Afraid Because Of The Abuse. So We Trained Him As You Would Any Other Cat, But Because Of His Early Agression, We Did Autism Holds. Gentle Voice, Firm Holding, Gentle Touching After An "Attack". After 4-5 Months He Learned That Attacks Weren't Okay. During This Training Time However, He Wanted Nothing More Than To Be In My Lap, And On My Chest At Night, And Under My Arm During The Day. So We Played Throughout The House To Get His Energy Out In A Positive High Octane Way. Now I Think He Believes We Are His Parents, He Lays On Daddy's Chest Anytime He Wants, And Lays Wrapped Mama On The Couch Whenever He Can. Absolutely The Most Enriching Relationship I've Ever Had. My Husband And I Have Grown Children, And Having Time To Properly Train A Rescued Cat Was The Greatest Gift To All Of Us. Give A Little Bit. 👌💕

My li'l cat Pepper loved me so much that she chose my bed to have her kittens.
I was IN THE BED AT THE TIME. She jumped up, meowed and purred and nuzzled me, and then crawled under the covers. She meowed a few more times, an then I felt something wet. I pulled back the covers to find she'd already delivered two.
My first instinct was like, 'Ick...' but my lovely girlfriend at the time pointed out that I should actually be flattered. Cats will only deliver their kittens where they feel safest. Despite having several prepared hidey holes ready, Pepper felt the safest place was under the covers, literally NEXT TO ME.
It is hard to NOT be humbled by that.

I had a cat named Toby. We found him in a box laying in the middle of the road. Ya... somebody pulled that on him!
It took him a little while before he opened up to me but once he did.... WOW!
He was the only cat I have ever seen that would come from all the way across the yard whenever I would just look at him and snap my fingers. He would watch me all the time waiting for me to give him the slightest bit of attention. I used to go out every night until it was nearly sunrise. I would let him out before I left.
And every time I would get home, there he was waiting for me on my front porch. I'd pet him for a little while and he would just snuggle on me and butt heads the whole time. I would let him in and go to bed and he would jump on my stomach and knead my stomach. It lasted so long, I had to start wearing a shirt while I laid there just so he didn't scratch my stomach open. Once Toby fell asleep he would sleeping face to face with me with his front legs tucked under him, purring the entire time until I woke up. Some of the best sleeps you can have is when a cat is purring on you while you sleep! He did prefer me over eating too. He was so chill though. Just laid back and wasn't interested in playing rough. He wasn't a biter, but he would lick me so much I was wondering if I was going to have any skin left!
He loved my whole family but for some reason he really chose me. He wouldn't do the same with my family like he did with me.
He would jump up on my lap sometimes and if I didn't want him there I would put him back on the floor. He would immediately jump back up on me and look at me like...
" Now I know you didn't mean that so I'm gonna sit on your lap now. I would do this a few times and he wouldn't give in. And yes... I lost.... EVERYTIME! WITHOUT FAIL!
But I knew he loved me and trusted me more than anything in the world.
When he got old, je was stricken with throat cancer, and he could no longer eat. We made the decision it was time to put him down. I didn't want him suffering anymore and it was breaking my heart to see him like this. I couldn't just let him suffer. So we took him to the vet. But instead of just handing him over to a stranger to put him down without me being there, I went in with Toby and held him as they did it.
It was one of the hardest things I have ever done.
But Toby trusted me so much he purred in my arms until hos very last breath.
We found him in 1986. The vet said he was about 6 years old when we first found him.
Toby passed on September 11 2004 at the age of 24 in my arms, and loving every last minute of his long, happy life knowing and loving each other....
And I still miss him to this day with all my heart!
Excuse me... I got to go now... I seem to have something in my eye....

You don't often have cats that are so dedicated to someone to where they wouldn't leave you alone.
It's also not that often to have a cat that lives 24 years. He must have been living the happiest of lives, even after someone dumped him in the middle of a road in a box. He may have been abused by his previous owners. So for him to trust anybody as much as he trusted me... I must have done something right for him!

One thing that was not mentioned was your cat following you to the bathroom. Cats do this for 2 reasons:
    1) You are never more vulnerable, as a species, than you are when you're mid-poo. They are keeping guard.
    2) Your cat needs to make sure you cover up your business. Observe whether your kitty sniffs the loo before leaving. They're just making sure there's no trace of any smell that could alert predators to your 'seat of vulnerability'.

You are so right. There have been studies done that found that seniors in particular who are pet owners live longer than those without pets, and those who have a history of heart attack have a 65% reduced risk of mortality. That's why it upsets me so when I see the televised anti-cruelty commercials where they are taking custody of abused and abandoned pets. There should be a program to try to match up those pets with seniors who may benefit from having them.

I agree so much with you. Even the most Feral of all Kitty's can become Sweet. It's not there fault they are Feral and do not understand Love. They just need Patience and Love shown to them. It would be such a win win benefit for the person and the kitty to have each other. They have programs now for Prisoners to get Kitty's. So hopefully they do the same for Elderly Residents. I love hearing stories of Nursing Homes having a Kitty Resident

A little trick I learned is to purr at your cat when you pet them. I did with mine and he is more affectionate than ever. By making the purring sound while rubbing his back, he understood that I enjoy petting him as much as he enjoys getting petted. He use to only let me pet him for a minute or two and than jump down. I'm 60 years old and my arms get tired easily. I guess he misread me shifting him to a more comfortable position as me wanting to stop. So, I tried the purring trick and he has been happier than ever. I use to have to pick him up to pet him, now he happily jumps onto my lap. Try it and good luck.

I've taken that a step further. I've got several cats and they all have their own particular "meow." One is Mrow, one is Raaa, one is Owraa, one is Braaaa, one Mrew. I learnt with a canary if you mimic their sounds they'll identify more strongly with them cos it's communication. I talk to my cats like I'd talk to a human but I include their own particular meow noise in there as an extension of their name and yeah they love it when you purr at them sometimes. One of them in particular has a Brip Brip type of chirp inherited from his dad.

Ah, that was why. My cousin had adopted a deaf cat who had survived a car accident. She was very 'agressive' and shy, even to her 'owners'. When I stayed at their place I slept in - the reading-room = HER bedroom. She stared at me fiendishly. I thought, well, I'm a intruder, let's try to blink back slowly. She jumped on my lap and never left me for the whole week whenever I was in the house, and since I was sleeping in HER bed, she slept with me and rolled around my head and rode on my shoulder. All called me a strega, because I had bewitched that cat. - No, I only blinked slowly at a deaf cat who would not hear me making kind noises...

Years ago, I had a grey white Maine Coon named C.J. that would jump up on my bed while I was reading the Sunday Paper. He would carefully walk up my stomach, and stick his nose under the bottom of the paper, walk up my chest and lay down with his nose just under my chin purring up a storm. After nearly a minute of intense petting, stroking, and hindquarter scratching . The purring would get so loud and the vibrations would make my chest tingle. He would reach up and ever so gently bite and hold onto my chin. Never once hurting for a little more than a minute and his eyes closed. He never did this for my wife or my 3 children who had their own cats. C.J. was mine and I was his. So big , he could standing on his hind legs and look directly out onto the kitchen counter 5 cats and 2 beagles at the same time living in a remote area of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

One of our cats puts teeth to your skin to say 'I have had enough touching in that particular location or way'. She doesn't sink her teeth in, she just communicates with the tools she has at hand. She is a quiet cat; She doesn't talk to humans (though she is social and loving) but when she's by herself and you hear a lengthy discussion, it turns out to be her playing with her stuffed toys. I'm not sure what she's saying, but you can hear it around the house.

I met my boyfriend who had a cat and been going to his place for a few years . At first, the cat was very shy with me, being unsure but he started trusted me pretty quickly as i love animals and i guess they feel it. Once i moved in with my boyfriend, i created this huge bong with the cat and now he doesnt leave me alone. I work from home and he is on my lap the whole day, or sleeping on the chair beside me. He sleeps with me, he follows me around the house like crazy. i know him so well now, i know all of his meows, when hes hungry, or wants love, or wants me to stop petting him. I fell in love with him, i think i love him more than my bf lol. He is 16 yo now and im trying to enjoy every moment i can with him because i know it can go sour and quick at this age. i grew up with a bunch of animals, dogs, horses, cats, rats (yes, rats, they were adorable) birds and little mices, my mother was usually the only one who could get all these signs from one of the cats, it was her princess, she wasn't really showing affection to me or my brother, but on rare occassions she would show a bit of love here and there, sitting on our laps, laying around us sleeping, letting us pet her, giving us those little bites (playful ones) but overall, she was my mother's cat, we did have another one who was my princess, she would do all the things in the video and then some, for some reason, she favored me more then the rest of my family, it was the same behavior my aunties german shepherd showed to me only, tho, that dog saw me when I was an infant and basically protected me until she sadly passed away at the age of 15, she was a good dog, my precious zenta.

From my experience, tail motion is a particular art to interpret. part of it is how much of the tail is involved, part of it is how rapid the motion is (a slow flop vs a flick), and part of it is just the way they lay their tail when it isn't moving. If you pay attention to your cats tail as you interact with then and note their mood as certain motions take place, you can get a pretty good idea of what your cat is trying to tell you without even seeing their face by seeing just a couple of seconds of motion from their tail.

It takes quite a while to understand cats if you've only lived with dogs. I experienced this when I adopted my first cat. I eventually learned she loved me by watching her behavior, her mannerisms, and her body language. She taught me all I needed to know, and I never doubted how much she loved me.

My cat only spoke English to me while others were gone.
So we kept it a secret.

My big sweet boy Pixie used to surprise me with 'breakfast in bed'. Sometimes, it was still wiggling!🙂
