The Buchla Easel is one of the more unique synthesisers you'll come across. It has a sound all of its own... and an interface to match!
In this video series I'll break the Easel down into its component parts, and describe the role each of these parts play in creating the wonderful palette of sounds at this instrument's disposal.
About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
My channel is these things:
1. A place to share my songs - via various 'Back on Track' video series - in which you'll see each song idea evolve step-by-step, with me (hopefully!) improving my song-writing skills as we go.
2. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase.
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

I applaud you for selecting this arcane instrument that others are probably afraid to approach. Bravo.
Thanks! It's such an iconic part of history, and sadly overlooked
This is truly exceptional. All your series are. What a fantastic job you have done here! You're not only incredibly detailed and clear in your explanations, you also take time to explain things that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere, including most of the official trademark manuals, be it on the theory of synthesis and acoustics or the use of a specific quirky thing related to this or that particular synth. *And* you give a historical and musical context to everything you describe. I've followed countless times your series on the ARP2600 (with my own software and Behringer's hardware copy), Buchla Easel, DX7, CS-80, Synthi... and have learned how to use them and understand them entirely thanks to you. I count on following every other series one by one. Arturia, and geeky musicians like me, should make a golden statue of you. Thank you so much for your exceptional work.
That's so kind of you to say, thank you very much. Curious minds are just the best :)
This is the kind of modular a non modular person like myself can dig. Thanks for this. I tried the demo and although I had a lot of fun and could create fascinating sounds, I had no idea what the hell I was doing! Lol
Thank you for these series: very interesting, and, I also applaud you for selecting the Buchla emulator! @5:00 The ordering of the numbers next to the sliders seem logical to me. Example: the modulation ranges from 0 to 10, increasing as it goes higher. Therefore, raising the modulation to a "higher" level makes intuitive sense-reversing this progression would feel counterintuitive.
Thank you for this series. It's very helpful. You are a rare human.
You are so welcome, thanks for the kind feedback :)
I just wanted to add some kudos. Not only do you have a massive quantity of tutorials, but your excellence in explaining the concepts is phenomenal. How you find the time to even learn the instruments in the first place is beyond me. You must be a genius. And seeing that you chose Cubase gives me confidence that I also made a good choice of a DAW after Sonar went away.
Wow, thanks! I think I'm just curious with a healthy measure of stubborn ;)
Man, so great. To have somebody explaining the tools that I use normally only in preset mode. And now I can use them like my own tools, as I want them to sound. Great.
You're very welcome, I'm glad you're enjoying the content :)
