  • No, really. These devices are terrible, unreliable, cheaply made, lumps of bitter disappointment. Now, I have a place for them in the new (rearranged) studio; The Box of Shame.

      I've been thinking of doing a tear down of the Duo as well as the Vintage bulbs that failed--particularly so I can isolate the point of failure (I'm really leaning towards the voltage regulation circuitry getting cooked with no large enough thermal mass to compensate for the switching). I'll certainly do that in a future video!
      As far as the binge, I sure do appreciate that as well, but forgive me some sins in my older videos, it's been a learning process and I *think* I'm getting better over time.

    What about Shelly's warranty on those devices ?

      A very fair point. I did not mention the warranty, which according to Shelly's Terms and Conditions is a period of 2 years provided there was no damage due to misuse; however, I bought 2 of the G125, 2 of the ST21, and 10 of the A19 and they all failed, so my fear is that I'd just replace a failing device with another potentially failing device.
      As far as a refund on the purchase, I'm certain that's a possibility, though I will admit I tend to keep broken devices as props or for parts. In this case, I do plan to investigate what it was that caused all these bulbs to fail (I'm guessing a design flaw in the LED driver that makes it more susceptible to in-rush or overheating) and I want to try some experiments with the LED "filaments" provided they are not the issue (which I'd almost put money on the LEDs themselves being okay).
      I should say, Shelly has never been uncooperative or hesitant in any way to provide support or make things right with customers. I've never had a device replaced or refunded, but I do know at least two home owners that have sent failed relay products back--even a couple that might've been the customer's fault--and Shelly has replaced them immediately with no questions asked.
      Still, this doesn't make these particular devices any better and I suspect Shelly already knows this. They've already moved away from the H&T and replaced it with a more robust device (and one with an e-ink display that I will be reviewing soon because it's neat). I think they're replacing a few of their other offerings as well due to quality control issues--at least, that's my best guess as they changed manufacturers for some gen 2 and gen 3 devices. I wouldn't be surprised if the Vintage line slowly gets replaced or vanishes entirely if there continue to be issues.
      Sorry for such a long response, but this was a significantly important point. I hope other viewers read though this as well. Thanks for watching and for contributing!
