- One of the key reasons for visiting York was, of course, to visit the National Railway Museum, and in particular, get up close and personal with my favourite steam locomotive.

Good to have you in the country, enjoy the trip
Enjoy NYMR!!! See you at GETS!
Just a bit of trivia, a few years ago visiting the museum with grandkids I turned to an elderly chap (visiting with his daughter) what a magnificent engine, to which he quietly replied, she wasn’t that colour when I was a guard on her From Bournemouth to Bath. A very informative talk followed.
Yes,The Star is also one of my favourites. I had the great fortune to ride behind her about 30 years ago on the West Somerset Railway, before she was placed as a static exhibit.
You must be very excited with all these actual engines. Enjoy your trip.
My favourite loco happens to be in the very same museum: Mallard. There’s just something so sleek and beautiful about it, and I’m always in awe whenever I go to York.
My favourite locomotive too and definitely the best of the standard classes (some may disagree with that!). They were quite often used on passenger trains when speeds of 90 mph were achieved. One of the class (92203) is also recorded has having hauled a train of over 1000 tons.
Love 9F North Norfolk railway have the Black Prince. Enjoy your UK vacation.
Glad your enjoying your time in the UK, York is one of my favourite places to visit not just for the Railway Museum but it's a very interesting and beautiful city. Love your favourite locomotive, and I agree it really is a powerful and marvellous beast. Enjoy GETS, and the rest of your trip to the UK. Take care Eddy xx
Along with the 9F and Q1 the A1 Terriers are my favourites. 😊
Hi I live in South Shields and the unique 9fs that was operational at Tyne Dock from South Shields to Consett Iron Ore trains. Lasted till gone 1965 just. They were fitted with Westinghouse pumps. Hornby now make these with the pumps fitted so you must get one as mine has just been delivered and it is fantastic. Your collection would need one of these fantastic models. 👍👨✈️🚂
I visited the museum from Holland back in may. Great day out! Rgds, Joachim
You have to see a 9F running Julian! They are so impressive
Hi Julian welcome to UK, hope you enjoyed your visit to the National Railway Museum, what a wonderful way to start your visit, take care and enjoy the rest of your stay, regards Barry (in Kent)...

Fingers crossed for you NYM visit and you get a ride on the 9F
Welcome to the UK.
Love the 9F also. I painstakingly drew a 9F in pencil when I was about 11. The picture turned up quite recently - and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the picture was!
I`m sure you`ll be adding to your collection on your tour round the UK, Hope to bump into you at GETS
We did a few days in Pickering and travelled on the NYMR to Whitby between lockdowns a couple of years ago. We had a great time. We didn’t have time to do the National Rail Museum that time but went many years ago when the children were young (both in their 40’s now!) . This year we visited Norfolk on a tour which included preserved railways and Sandringham House. Certainly worth visit to that area. How long are you over here? Looking forward to catching up with you on Sunday. Roy.
Id recommend Beamish Living Museum in County Durham if you are ever up the north east.
Week days are probably the quietest, not sure why they said weekend Sunday afternoons were quiet 😅
Wow Julian.
Great to see the true scale of the 9F.
There are some great steam engines at the York Museum.
What a treat for you.
Stay safe and happy Travels.
Mon.
Welcome to the UK Julian! And an excellent choice in favourite loco! Your description of why (I don't really know why) is exactly the same as mine! 9F's have always been my favourite class. I was just and still am drawn to them. I actually had the privilege of firing one a few years ago and she was a dream, so easy to fire and keep the steam pressure up! Anyway, enjoy your time here and catch you on Sunday all being well 🙂
one of our 9Fs ( black prince ) was owned by the famous wildlife millitary and railway artist david shepherd don't know wether that is the one at the NYMR presently
NO IT IS 92134
Hi Julian. I too would like to welcome you to the UK. I also like the Q1, for its Quirky looks and the fact that it was the most powerful 0-6-0 steam loco. It's just a shame that its braking power let it down. The 9Fs do look superb, they are so massive. I've never seen Evening Star in the "flesh" (I've never visited the NRM and am waiting til the refurbishment of one of the halls is complete). There is a great example of a 9F at the North Norfolk Railway at Sheringham. The Black Prince holds the record for the heaviest (2,198 tonnes in September 1982) freight train ever pulled hauled in Britain. I'm not sure which is my favourite loco. My favourite N gauge model is Harry Wainright's Class C in the SE&CR livery.
Super museum, eh Julian.
We have something in common with a love for the 9F. Had the good fortune to get on the footplate of the one on the North Yorks Moors Railway while it was waiting in Grosmont. The fire grate is huge. Hope you get to do the same.
