I am a memory man like yourself. Wherever I would go I'd reminisce about what *used to be here and there* decades ago. Most times the current people don't even know about the past of their own local area because so many have moved away and places changed ownership three and four times.
The terrible state of roads and the amount of garbage littering the land never seems to change in most parts of the world unfortunately. Thanks for the walking tour. They're always enlightening no matter what.
Thank you for posting this video I enjoyed seeing the village I grew up, my family’s house is on the Public Rd directly across from middle street. I loved seeing all the changes. Going to Starlite cinema was a big deal, everybody would get dressed up. Depot damn and seeing the mosque and the Roman Catholic Church, Malgrotut primary school going around the bend towards Versailles …so many memories. It’s nearly 50 years since we left Guyana. Loved this.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching.
Starlight is no more, building razed and Toolaram Supermarket will soon be occupying that spot. Word has it that Exxon bought out their current location which is just up the road and on the same side as the ( Versailles ) mosque.
My dad and his siblings - all in their 80s now - grew up here!! All of them left Guyana many years ago for Canada and the UK. I've only been to Pouderoyen once, in the 1990s and the Starlight Cinema was still open. The people who lived in the house my dad grew up in remembered my dad's family and invited us in to see the house - they were super friendly! My dad was tickled to show it to us. It made me so happy, it was an amazing thing to see. In my memory, they lived in the house across from the Starlight but I could be wrong. My dad wanted to quit school to work at that sawmill but my grandpa put his foot down and said no, you're finishing school!
Thank you for this video. It makes me feel homesick for a place I don't even know. I'm sending it to my dad - and I've subscribed to your channel!
Cool, I also grew up there, we lived behind the Azeezes ( the late Maji of the Versailles Mosque) They sold their house, which is still there ) to the Ramsamoojs. They migrated to Canada
I will definitely know your dad.
We left there in 1990.
I sent him the link and this is what he said...
" I don't recognize much: the Catholic Church and school I attended, the Starlite cinema under demolition and the sawmill located just behind where we lived. The roads are paved, with all those overhead power lines, and did the guy say they have a supermarket??
"The aerial view at the end shows a different place from the little village I grew up in, population about 150.
I think my three little brothers would love to see this."
Thank you for the view of the back of the saw mill.
I haven't seen at the back there since I was a kid.
Nice seeing my born village, pouderoyen, I went to west demerara secondary school

Was born in Phoenix Park and attended that school. Those days we had teacher Mary. Saw Jaws and Saturday Night Frver at the Starlite.

Yes Teacher Mary was the Headmistress, and she had a Dongs 🌳 tree. Eventhough we know we had to face her everyday we still took the chance and thief her Dongs😀😀 Small days !!!
@@RealNiceGuyana, I remember that temple too. It use to have a statue with the tail tied with a string.
The owner of the sawmill use to have tucans in a big cage.
Yes you are correct , the Hanuman idol and yes Cheddi used to have Macaws in a big cage. I also remember that.
Can you remember Collard / Collad ? he used to raid us when we used to go for 🔥 fire wood at the sawmill for our fireside 😀

Nice video bro 👍 I'm sure that you have some fun memories of Starlite cinema 🎥👍👍🍺🎄✋
Yes man, that was the place to check out the girls, especially Sunday afternoon 5 pm Indian Movie.
Pouderoyen was the brightest Village on the West Demerara because we had many things in a small area. We had a Cinema, Funeral parlour, 3 rum shop 😄, a butcher shop, a sawmill, tailor shop , slaughter house , library .
The Cinema was the biggest of course , people used to me there from as far as Nismes . A lot of times on a bicycle , boys would tow their friends on their bicycle all the way from Nismes etc to the Cinema.
@@RealNiceGuyana Nice memories bro 😁👍 I can imagine how much fun you guys have at your village 😁😊🍺🍺 what about the Chinese restaurant in your village was the food 🍗 good just curious?
Yes man Pouderoyen was the liveliest village because of the Cinema mainly and of course we had we Chinese restaurant. 🍽Yes the food was very good. I remember some of the guys used ro buy fish🐟 from the cart and the Chinese guy who ran the restaurant would cook the fish for them. there was a good relationship with people there.
