Your videos are hugely helpful, thank you so much Hans! I'm very new to Avid but familiar with Premiere and Resolve, so a thorough explanation of how Avid handles media, and its terminology, is a lifesaver. Please keep making these, you have already helped me so much. Future ideas for videos for a novice (me) might be explaining Avid's UI (e.g. what the different cursors represent, what the symbols in the middle of the video track mean, etc.), the difference between DNX codecs and their practical uses, or how to go about changing levels or mixing audio (basic sound design). Again thank you so much, you have gained a new subscriber and your channel will grow so fast. There are not many great AVID-based channels, so I think you will do very well. Cheers
If mxf op atom. Just create a numbered folder in avid media files folder and drag them directly into the media folder. Avid automatically indexes all clips and adds a database file. Dragging the single database file into a bin instantly populates all clips without having to link + consolidate at all.
Loved this video, thank you for explaining it so well. Thanks you. With Media Composer 2020.12 you can now link then consolidate or transcode media with alpha.
I was working with h.264 codec in avid media composer and whenever I tried to render effects there was an exception. It said something about missing comressed data from video format. I linked the h264 codec and start working with it, but I never transcoded it. now I import the footage from OBS studio and changed the coded to a AVID supported format. Hope this wiill end my problems XD
Hi Hans. Once you consolidate or transcode you have two copies of the same clip in your bin. Why won't you delete the linked master clip? Won't Avid work on a version from Avid MediaFiles anyway?
As a Premiere editor, does Avid not have a way to attach proxies to your footage and toggle between them like Premiere does? That's gonna take some getting used to. Great video, though! It's a bit dense so I may need to revisit it, but it very plainly shows a lot of things I was wondering about.
Of course! AVID invented the proxy offline workflow. You would consolidate media to another drive and just relink back and forth. Either switching between AMA(source camera file) & low res proxy OR Full Res & Low res proxy or anything really. You can create infinite versions and relink to any at any point. Just note that if AMA linked, you cannot do the famous AVID exportless finishing workflow via Quicktime Reference so you would have to actually export the file like the other prosumer NLE's.
Great video! I only have a question. I usually work on Premiere, where you can just edit with the linked file without needing to consolidate/transcode (copying indeed), so I don't actually create new files. So I assume you always have to calculate the size of the entire footage twice when working on Avid. In order to avoid losing lots of space, do you recommend transcoding to proxies from the beginning or you have to consolidate if you are working with ProRes 444 for example and also make proxies?
You'd have to create proxies in Premiere as well if you want to have smooth scrubbing/playback. Personally, I'd do the same in Resolve. Link to original media and create proxies, which are relatively small.
@@pooyanmanoochehry2629 Thanks! Yeah, I got an answer and learning later I realized that the workflow is still the same, you can transcode, instead of consolidating, from the very beginning into proxies with LUTs (which was one of my concerns) and other stuff.
Hey! How can i link my Alexa arriraw mxf-wrapped files into bin? I can't find the needed AMA-plugin nowhere, so is there any more ways to link them? Thanks!
What if my source media has a different frame rate than my project? If I transcode the source media into the project's frame rate, wouldn't it break the link between the source and the transcoded footage (that serves me as a PROXY I intend to relink back before the delivery)?
Hi Hans, so to use AMA linking we have to use only mxf files ? how to get mxf files :( All I have are mp4 and mov and whenever i use linkin, it is creating new files and my C drive is completely full now.
sure, LB - as it says - is low bandwidth, and depending on the subject you will have artefacts either directly or in the later stages of the postproduction. it's not comparable to HQ which has more than four times of data rate. if you're just working offline it might be okay but not for anything more
So, sir i have an hour video only AMA Linked.. what should i do?? Should i transcode it first or shall i cut it roughly and then transcode it to DNxHD HQ?? Please suggest sir i am confused!?.. oh and i forgot to mention i have low disk space like only 512 gb in my laptop.. please help me to work smartly and give my work to the clients..as soon as possible!!
Best practice to RELINK AMA clip to the drive with the .new media. Then the all clips are preserved with the newly ingested media and can always be relinked back to ama'd source files status. All ".new" clips can be then be deleted to have a clean ingest bin without unnecessary copies. Make sure to only check "clip" and keep "delete related media files" UNchecked so you only delete clips not media. Organized editors work faster!!
This got me to finally get the difference between transcoding and consolidating (used to working in Premiere). Ty!

Thanks for the video ideas, Ryan!
Your videos are so helpful
Very helpful, thank you!
Thanks a lot, great video! Worked as a caption guy with it in the past, approaching my first Avid editing job. Really refreshed my memory!
Great, thanks Julian!

THANK YOU FOT YOUR VIDEOS,... what about importing a whole folder that have more folders from your hard drive

Thanks Fredrik! Right, that's a great new feature!
This is great bro , i am watching them , keep making new videos. I fully support
Thanks Karan!
can you make a video with aaf exports and what is the best way to transfer only used media in a timeline to davinci (with original footage linked) ?
Thank you for this. Keep making videos.
Thanks for watching!

hi! is there a significant quality difference in transcoding in dnxhd_LB vs. dnxhd_HQ?
Thanks and more power!

When i am trying to convert footage it only gives me the option to transcode and not transcode/consildate. I really need help.
Hi Andrew, you can only consolidate footage that is native to Avid, everything else has to be transcoded. What are the specs of your clips?
Avid Media not working gives me Windows 10 and 11 blue error screen but premiere is easy to install
please make a tutorial on working with png (Videos as well as images) in Avid.....please......cause it is so easy in adobe pp
Thanks!
