  • Bamboo basketry - is a traditional craft in India. Indigenous communities developed special shapes and patterns of baskets based on their local traditions, needs and techniques. Traditionally, the crafts persons used to make winnows, a type of tray-like bamboo basket used in Bengal, for everyday use and rituals. Different types of baskets, hand-held fan, sieves etc. are also made, then painted with auspicious symbols and are used in marriages and other ceremonies. The crafts persons now are using the weaving technique and producing various diversified products like lamp-shades, coasters, etc. based upon the market needs. There are a few artists who make diversified products using dry bamboo roots, whole bamboo poles and make furniture using bamboo. There are total 503 crafts persons practicing the craft in Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, Malda, Birbhum, Bardhaman district under the RCCH initiative.
