I just talked to the rep and they confirmed the cover is fake leather. It literally feels like plastic so I'm not surprised. I told them they should update their product page because a lot of people don't want leather.
The glittery watercolor paper comes color coded. The one you tried is the hot press, cold press medium grain comes in a peach colored envelope and the cold press rough grain comes in an orange envelope. Thank you for this fantastic review!
this is not related to this review, but I have to say that I love when I find people that really make me wanna draw and paint, I don't know what it is, but I feel like grabbing my supplies every time I watch a video from you :) thank you for being inspiring
I also started buying Paul Rubens Blocks at the same time (mainly because all professional grade art supplies are mega expensive wher I live) and I am so impressed with the quality of the paper. I had not bought blocks before -This is the cheapest option for me-and it took me a while to get used to separating all the gummed pages but I love it now.
@@KizetteandTotoro I find that I get weird lint on my page if I get the gummed edges wet? It’s weird, I just tape off the border as if it wasn’t on a block
It's pretty hard to pay attention to the products when you're taking two or three swipes with a brush to make amazing paintings appear that don't just convey landforms and vegetation but also light and movement and mood on just a scrap-size bit of paper space. I get a little woozy and giggly at the wonder of it all.
Hello from Australia 😁 Just purchased this watercolour sketchbook today ( from Amazon Australia). I have been enjoying ink drawings in a Midori notebook but since I like adding extra water and creating washes there has been more bleed through than I’d hoped….Thanks for your thorough review. Subscribed 😺
I got a small version of this sketchbook for free when I got my Paul Ruben watercolour palette a year ago. I was very much a beginner then, and even I could appreciate the quality of that paper. I prefer a more impressionistic style of painting and this paper is perfect for that. I'm ordering the bigger version tomorrow since my little one is almost full. I would recommend this sketchbook to anyone. My only gripe is that I don't know what sizing they use for the paper. It acts a lot like the Strathmore 500 hot press watercolour paper, so I think it may be vegan but I'm not positive.
I never tried 100% cotton hot press. But the shimmer/glitter paper is interesting. I don't think it'and s distracting but definitely not for every day painting. I liked the look of the coast painting you did on this paper. The shimmer effect makes this special. I think this will look good if someone loves to paint water, too.
Thank you! Hot press is my go-to paper. I started out on the drafting and graphics side in the early days and it actually took me some time to adjust to the texture of cold press when I took up watercolor "for real" a couple of years ago. And that sparkly paper?! Who knew?! I just ordered a pack on special through Amazon to try it out. I have a couple of gift ideas for the upcoming holiday where it might work out well. I am always willing to give a new product a try. I have been using Paul Rubens watercolors for about a year now and they are very solid. I would rank them in Tier 2 after my go-to Roman Szmal, M Graham, Daniel Smith, and Mijelo Mission Gold.
I think the white etchr sketchbooks are actually baohong artists paper, there's a retailer on US Amazon that lists that it is, and the performance is consistent with the baohong artists papers I have as full sheets!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the beautiful colours on your palette at around the 15 minute mark? 😍 15:00 I'm so glad that you liked this little sketchbook so much! I LOVE the Etchr sketchbooks but they're pretty expensive, and this looks like it might be a good alternative. I also love the idea of the perforated pages, just in case there's anything you'd like to take out. Nice review, Sarah!
I love this sketchbook, personally. I actually got the big block and just removed glue on 3 sides to make it a sketchbook and it's my favorite sketchbook ever. But I havent tried etchr yet. Idk if I want a "sketchbook" THAT fancy tbh.
The sparkle paper is so subtle and cool. Think coastal, any waterscape or winter scenes. I think it would work for cityscapes too. I love their hot press sketch books, but got mine in black. The price is great and I prefer the plastic cover so I can reuse my tape. My cloth covered Etchr books always looked dirty after a while so I had to coat them in acrylic paint. Thanks for your wonderful videos.
I have to advise always putting a 'catch under' paper under pages in sketchbooks in case of bleeding. Even if the paper is great. This prevents ruining any pages that come 'next' accidentally. Fun video, thanks.
As always, I am never disappointed with your videos. I have not tried Paul Rubens products, but now I am on board with this sketch book. The sparkle paper is very intriguing, too. Thank you for such a complete review. Knowing how it behaves with mixed media is an important factor. Thank you!
Hi, I’ve used this pad often, once that same indentation happened. If you don’t want to remove it,i have done this in the book. Spritz lightly the area with water both sides and with a brush gently wet the indentation. Let dry with wax paper underneath. It came out nice and even. It is easier if you take the page out and let it dry under pressure.
Thank you for this video. This is the question I was struggling with. I live in Japan and the Paul Ruben sketchbooks are available ,too. But I was wondering if it was a high quality - cheap sketchbook or the other way round. And so far I thought I had to make the leap of faith. So thanks to this demonstration, I can make the leap of faith but with the faith that I am likely to be satisfied with this paper. Thank you!
The sparkle paper might be fun if you paint your own Christmas cards. Someone on Amazon was saying that watercolor paints don’t granulate on this paper. Another complained about the paper tearing when trying to remove masking fluid. I do love good granulation, so would be curious to know about that. All in all it seems like a very affordable sketchbook. I will give it a try. It is $14.99 on Amazon in the US for this size, (the size you tested) and there is also a smaller size.
Hello! The glittery paper she was sent is the hot press paper. They come coded in colores enveloves. The lilac is hot press, there is a peach envelope which is cold press medium grain and an orange envelope which is the cold press rough texture. I have not personally tried it with masking fluid myself but I have masked a little with painter's tape and the hot press didn't tear at all.
I think the glittery paper does not distract from the painting and is a lot of fun! It also seems to be a decent quality considering the lack of buckling.
I like these sketchbooks & have used several of them, especially the small size for traveling - BUT do prefer cold press. Wish Paul Rubin made them in cold press! Thank you for sharing 🙏
Great video review as always! (I hope that the Amazon link in the description gives you a percentage on the purchases! I've bought 2 sketchbooks for now,but I will buy more in the future!)
Ohh wow that’s awesome!!! I just got a Paul Rubens A6 Pink Sketchbook yesterday and have yet to use it. I have never used hot press paper. This is definitely a wonderful video of inspiration. I also have yet to try an Etchr Sketchbook so I can add that to my list of things to try. Yes I am going to try the sparkling paper as well. Thanks for sharing this fun informational video! 💕😊
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I prefer smooth paper over textured so I will be keeping an eye on the Paul Rubens for when I need to get some more paper.
Thank you again for all your videos - I use Paul Rubins sketchbooks - wish they also came in cold press - especially like the small books - I keep one in my car so I’m always ready to sketch & paint!
I am so happy that you did this video because I have wondered about the quality. I have seen other videos on it but I trust you the most. Now I will buy one! Thanks Sarah🙏😊
Ok...I have to get this! I was skeptical about the glittery paper too, but it turned out pretty cool! Perfect for an ocean scene!...I'm surprised they didn't send some of their watercolor for you to test as well since I see they make that as well...thank you Sarah!⚘
I’ve had that sketchbook in my Amazon cart for forever. Now I know it will be a good buy, thanks! I have the PR sparkle cold press cotton paper, and I LOVE IT! I wish it came in a block.
Hello Sarah!! I got the paul Rubens large blue palette of paints a couple years ago which I don’t think they stock anymore but they sent me a tiny sketchbook the same as yours. I avoided using it to be honest as the glue holding the first inner page. Was placed wonkily and I wondered about the sketchbook being substandard. I can’t wait to dig it out and give it a try! Wow thank you for the video. ❤
I actually just placed an order after hearing about this. I was never a sketchbook person and never was interested, but after seeing so many other artists and especially today after seeing you, I thought maybe I need to try this. I am such a perfectionist and such a final piece type of person, and I'm coming from 15 years of digital art, so everything I do is plagued by perfectionism especially with digital art because of the zooming in features, the undo buttons and all the millions of possibilities, it takes me forever to finish anything digitally and as I get older my body can't tolerate sitting at a computer anymore. Sitting at a desk with regular paper I can do though because I'm looking downwards as opposed to upwards at a monitor - I know it probably sounds really weird, it's because I've been sitting in my bed on my computer cross legged for 10+ years and I end up sitting cross legged in my chair and fidgeting so much when on the computer, I can't have my feet down for some reason...plus digital art is just so tedious and not fun at all for me anyway. But anyway! plus I just loooove traditional art SO much, it's so much faster for me and loosens me up a lot more. I'm hoping I can just play around and let loose with this sketchbook, your videos are so inspiring I just love the atmosphere of everything!
Oh noo I typed a huge answer to this and somehow lost it... :( But basically I was just saying that I understand the struggles of digital. To me physical paint is so much more immersive and rewarding and enjoyable!
@@SarahBurnsStudio Oh no worries!! I agree and I was thinking of ways to not have to sit on a chair, I am much more comfortable cross legged for some reason. I've been watching more of your videos and the more I learn about your struggles the more I relate! Like you said a couple of times you have a bad back! Ah, so do I! It's my fault though for being a potato for 15 years, when I was a teenager I could do anything, but now I literally feel like an old lady and I'm only 33 hah. I might end up clearing some floor space in my room and sit on the floor to do some drawing studies and things like that, I even purchased a huge masonite drawing board a while ago because I had a future intention of working on the floor... my bed has been abused already from me sitting in 1 spot and sinking it. Can you believe I just bought this brand new mattress back in July and it's already sagging!!! It's horrible for my back and the return window is over, I'm not sure what to do about it, it's a pillowtop so there's no flipping it, grr...I wish I had just got a normal firm mattress instead. Ahh the struggles of being a potato!
@@dreamrabbits5072 I love big drawing boards! I use them a lot, and I have a little desktop easel so I can prop it up if needed. Regarding your mattress we have a really crappy one but I bought a 4” memory foam topper and it has saved my body from nightly torture. It is much cheaper than getting a new mattress. I got mine online and came rolled up, it is super heavy so maybe ask them to put it in the room and open it. Let it inflate and air out for several hours before use too because they kinda smell bad at first (like chemicals)
I found the Paul Reubens books and could not believe how awsome the paper is for the price. The last time I accidentally ordered a block. Also nice paper but I prefer the book
ohhhh im buying it for sure ! Even though ive been testing the magnificient strathmore sketchbook 500 series and i love it, i wanna see how this one feels
Thanks for the review! Always love to hear your thoughts :) I was definitely interested in checking them out, but upon looking at other Amazon reviews, it seems the creases in the pages due to the ribbon is a common problem, along with other crease damage in their books. That's really disappointing. I hope they fix that, that's a big quality control problem. I'll keep an eye on them though, but probably still stick to other papers in the meantime.
love crescent rendr no bleed through paper even alcohol markers don't even show a hint of color on the other side , makes it awesome as you can use both sides of the paper, i do have several paul reubans working in one now the paper is awesome
Hello there Mrs.Burns: I just received the Paul Rubens Watercolor book as featured. I was curious about it and consequently found you. Happy accident. I use the same mixed media materials you mentioned in video. I also love markers too and would love to see a tutorial on them and those you recommend. I currently have gone down a rabbit hole with Technical Pens. Ranging from some made in the 40's & 50's to modern-day. However, they are quickly not being produced by many large popular Manufactures. So sad. I've stuck piled many types & brands. And all sizes from ISO .13, .18, .25, .35, .50, .70, 1.00, 1.40, 2.00- to everything from .13 to 2.00. I was curious to note you said you had the Rotring .40 and that was your personal smallest size. I found some amazing things & techniques you can accomplish with .13/.18 sizes and particularly with .2mm. I love your style and and found your comments to be true regarding Paul Rubens book. You're indeed doing a fantastic job on UA-cam! Thank you for contributing. P.S.- I'd be happy to send you a .13 size pen for you to play with. And how to easily maintain the smaller size as this is the reining comment about using them vs. fiber-tip pens. They have there place, but I've found being able to use high quality ink with refillable technical pens is worth the effort. Thanks so much. Gene in SW Florida.
It looks pretty cool. Sparkles. Hmmm… yeah. I like it. 👍. I saw on their site, that they are making a “ cold pressed” pad now. Would love to see if the pattern on it , is mechanically stamped looking. I’m picky about that. I feel a home made Arches sketchbook coming soon in my house. And…lol… it’s hard to get the same pattern front and back of pages in a lot of these journals. Thx for your review. I need to try the hot pressed. I have a PR block. 😏
The algorithms is working extra hard today 😂😂 I just bought those to exact things (sparkle paper and the sketchbook) BEFORE getting this video recommended and had the exact same thoughts for the water on the sparkle paper on a beach scene 😮
I want to say that smudge stuff you have is very similar to what I get to mix my paints up except mine is white my husband works in a tinting place he has most of the ingredients at his disposal at the moment. And I would like to know where do you get the sealer for gouache.
I bought the Paul Ruben travel size hot press watercolour book a couple months ago. Although I LOVE it, I have a couple complaints. I had the same issue as you were the ribbon indented the paper. It isn’t as noticeable anymore, but it’s still there. I also had the unfortunate luck to get a light black smudge on the back of the left side pages… on every. single. page. Ugh! But anyways… I loved the costal scene painting you made with the sparkle paper! I find it gorgeous!! Keep the videos coming 😄 I look forward to them everyday!
Sarah (if I may) I like your videos and work. Just subbed. I am Clint and live in Atlanta, Georgia. I have been drawing for 40 years and played with water color years ago. For about 6 years I have concentrated on digital illustrating using my laptop and Wacom tablet. Some call it digital "painting' but I am an older guy (63) and have trouble calling it painting. I feel like I ought to have paint to call it painting. Discovered you on UA-cam when I recently I picked up some colored pencils with the intention to do some drawings while hiking in the southern Appalachians. Been camping and hiking from the age of 10 but never combined hiking and drawing. You have been very inspiring. Thanks Clint.
Hello Clint and welcome :) I am happy to know you enjoy painting too! I've done digital painting before and while it is enjoyable, I always prefer the tangible feel of brushes, paint and paper or canvas. The tactile nature of paint brings me joy. I do however LOVE digital painting on the ipad on a dark night, in a blanket on the couch, cozy by the fire!
I must say I was a bit dubious about the sparkly paper Sarah, but I actually think it looks really nice. I’ll have to see if the Paul Rubens is available in Australia. Have you ever tried the Baohong sketchbook or watercolour paper? A marker tutorial would be awesome, particularly how to use them for sketching. Thank you for sharing as always (-: Marion
Love your videos, and this was such a good and helpful product review. Your work is awesome! I was tickled to see the Tri-Art product. I see from the label on your jar that the "sludge" was made here in Kingston, Ont. (Canada), where I live. Greetings and good painting wishes from across the Pond!
I have the hot press sketchbook, I think its pretty good, but I prefer something with a bit more texture, otherwise its pretty nice! (Its also the only cotton paper I've used so)
Yes, apparently they have 25% cotton mixed in, but damn, they really messed up their paper, it's literally the worst watercolor sketchbook I've ever used
Thank you for the recommendation. I've been umming and ahhing over sketchbooks. I currently have a cheap square one for general use and I have A6 Hahnemuhle watercolour book for taking around with me. I'm now looking to going up to A5 and have put this one on my list to definitely get :-)
I've actually really wanted to try the Paul Rubens sketchbook but the only thing that has held me back is all I can find is ones with genuine leather covers. I just try to avoid using leather and any animal hair in brushes and so on, but if they ever come out with a synthetic leather, I'll be first in line to grab one of these! The paper and the sizes are perfect for what I need.
So I just talked to the rep and they confirmed it is fake leather. It literally feels like plastic so I'm not surprised. I told them they should update their product page because a lot of people don't want leather.
@@SarahBurnsStudio Oh wow, you’re kidding! Thank you! The listings on Amazon all say “genuine leather” so I just assumed. Although, I thought the price was way too good for a real leather bound book! This is great news, thanks so much!
Sarah, I admire you so much. I myself am a self taught artist like you are! Your art has grown over the years and I have enjoyed watching your journey! I would love to visit Scotland some day and paint with you. Haha! Jk but I would love to go...your an amazing artist!!
I think I'm going to have to try the sketchbook. The price doesn't make me baulk like the Etchr (which I have in A6 and never use because my brain keeps saying it was ruddy expensive, you can't use it!)
I like the sketchbook but quality control is lacking. Mine came without the elastic band to keep it closed & bindings could be better. Aside from that, it’s a pretty good little fun book & colors look great. I prefer hot pressed cotton sketchbooks. Sketchbooks aren’t for sogging, they’re for sketching on the go and adding a bit of watercolor. Good for not killing your pen tips … so you can sketch using different mediums. It’s a good & versatile sketchbook with great paper.
I really like the sparkly on the costal scene! And I so surprised by the positive review because there are horror reviews on Amazon with the pages being glued together and the binding falling out. x) I trust your review though, and it would be cool to try a hotpress, though! Happy painting and thank you as always. :D
True. I always wish I could respond to customer reviews and tell them that they can replace the item or return it for free or just get a refund, amazon is really good that way! I think a lot of people just don't know this.
I bought the Paul Rubens sketchbooks last year thinking I wasn't going to like them. It's hard for me not to think lesser price equals lesser quality. That's not the case here. I actually really like these sketchbooks! Both hot and cold pressed. I'm happy to hear you like them too. Did your ROtring pen come with ink? If not, what ink are you using in yours? I bought one and it didn't come with ink. I purchased some of the ROtring ink thinking something else would clog it up. Curious about what you're using.
@@jadeintheparke1 I'm located in the United States. I've gotten both hot and cold pressed Paul Rubens sketchbooks from Amazon.
Aw that's a bummer about the glue. Hopefully it's just a once in a while thing. But I've enjoyed mine so far!
But basically I was just saying that I understand the struggles of digital.
Yes to marker video :)
excellent very nice .. watercolor
I've wondered what this sketch book was like, thanks for review!
Glad it was helpful!
I found the Paul Reubens books and could not believe how awsome the paper is for the price. The last time I accidentally ordered a block. Also nice paper but I prefer the book
I too was quite surprised by the quality compared to price!
loved this video! and the sparkle paper is really something
how pretty would that be for snow paintings!
I would love a marker tutorial
Can you do a video on the watercolor painting you did? I would like to see how you made the wave/sea spray. Tfs
ohhhh im buying it for sure !
Even though ive been testing the magnificient strathmore sketchbook 500 series and i love it, i wanna see how this one feels
I LOVE my strathmore!
I don't think you really need a ribbon in a sketchbook anyway, do you?
They do also have watercolor blocks at a reasonable price if you want to try the paper without the risk of the bookmark crease.
@@dshe8637 I guess for aesthetics? I would never care to have one or use it.
@@space.tel-e-grams Oh cheers! Thanks for mentioning that, I'll look into those instead :D
love crescent rendr no bleed through paper even alcohol markers don't even show a hint of color on the other side , makes it awesome as you can use both sides of the paper, i do have several paul reubans working in one now the paper is awesome
I've heard that too!
Thanks! I’m really not keen on the perforations, which is a real shame because otherwise it’s the answer to my dreams!😢
The algorithms is working extra hard today 😂😂 I just bought those to exact things (sparkle paper and the sketchbook) BEFORE getting this video recommended and had the exact same thoughts for the water on the sparkle paper on a beach scene 😮
isn’t it fun!
I think the glitter paper would be great for a galaxy painting. Loved your review.
Great idea!!
Aww that's a bummer..they might have sent you a new one if you sent them pictures?
@@SarahBurnsStudio Sounds nice. I will be watching. I think I will enjoy learning about gouache, especially sitting on a mountain top👍
I've heard the Baohong is really nice! I think Thomas Schaller uses it? And some other masters. But haven't tried it myself yet
Love your videos, and this was such a good and helpful product review. Your work is awesome! I was tickled to see the Tri-Art product. I see from the label on your jar that the "sludge" was made here in Kingston, Ont. (Canada), where I live. Greetings and good painting wishes from across the Pond!
Hello!
I have the hot press sketchbook, I think its pretty good, but I prefer something with a bit more texture, otherwise its pretty nice! (Its also the only cotton paper I've used so)
Good review. The Moleskine watercolour sketchbooks I buy here in Canada state that they are 25% cotton paper.
Yes, apparently they have 25% cotton mixed in, but damn, they really messed up their paper, it's literally the worst watercolor sketchbook I've ever used
Paul Rubens has become my absolute favorite, especially for the price.
thats pretty good bleed through, thought it would be a lot worse
the sparkly paper is def very gimmicky, but its sparkly! 😀
Thank you for the recommendation. I've been umming and ahhing over sketchbooks. I currently have a cheap square one for general use and I have A6 Hahnemuhle watercolour book for taking around with me. I'm now looking to going up to A5 and have put this one on my list to definitely get :-)
I'm always so tempted by square sketchbooks, but since I do a lot of landscapes I end up preferring the wider ratio!
Update: I got one! Super looking forward to using it :-)
Really cool
I've actually really wanted to try the Paul Rubens sketchbook but the only thing that has held me back is all I can find is ones with genuine leather covers. I just try to avoid using leather and any animal hair in brushes and so on, but if they ever come out with a synthetic leather, I'll be first in line to grab one of these! The paper and the sizes are perfect for what I need.
I'm sending them feedback, so thank you for letting me know! I'll pass this along.
@@debbiedrawsfunny yea im thinking their wording is either outdated or something got lost in translation
I wonder how the sparkle would work for snow scenes?
Sarah, I admire you so much. I myself am a self taught artist like you are! Your art has grown over the years and I have enjoyed watching your journey! I would love to visit Scotland some day and paint with you. Haha! Jk but I would love to go...your an amazing artist!!
Thank you so much Kelsey!
I think I'm going to have to try the sketchbook. The price doesn't make me baulk like the Etchr (which I have in A6 and never use because my brain keeps saying it was ruddy expensive, you can't use it!)
Yea I get that...I used to do that too. But now I just go for it! It's my expensive hobby but also my job so I tell myself it's always worth it
I like the sketchbook but quality control is lacking.
And I so surprised by the positive review because there are horror reviews on Amazon with the pages being glued together and the binding falling out. x)
I trust your review though, and it would be cool to try a hotpress, though!
Happy painting and thank you as always. :D
If you get a faulty sketchbook, just make the company replace it. It's super easy to return things on Amazon especially.
True. I always wish I could respond to customer reviews and tell them that they can replace the item or return it for free or just get a refund, amazon is really good that way! I think a lot of people just don't know this.
I bought the Paul Reubens cotton sketch book and it's a game changer. I love it
I bought the Paul Rubens sketchbooks last year thinking I wasn't going to like them.
Yes mine came with ink and that is what I'm still using
I’ve never been able to find cold press Paul rubens paper besides the glittery stuff! Where did you get it,
@@jadeintheparke1 I'm located in the United States. I've gotten both hot and cold pressed Paul Rubens sketchbooks from Amazon. You can also try Blick, Cheap Joes, Jerry's Artarama, or JacksonArt out of England to see if they carry that brand. There is no glitter in any of the sketchbooks I've purchased.
@@katel9378 that’s crazy because i can only find hot press sketchbooks and the occasional cold press block from PR
Hi! I always add pencil colors over watercolor to add details and finish my paintings, do you think the pencils would behave well in this paper?
It behaves like most hot pressed papers, so I think it would be fine.
This sparkling paper made me want to buy it like NOW. (Already put it into my shopping basket on Amazon. 😊💖)
I'm really enjoying it! I want to use it for some holiday cards too
@@SarahBurnsStudio Perfect for the upcoming season. 😄🌲🎄🎁🎊💚
@@SarahBurnsStudio Using it for holiday cards is what popped into my mind, too.
