    Old rusty's motor is where I first started to follow you, love the farm yard animals in the background. One tip I can pass on to you for the ultrasonic cleaner is put small parts in zip lock bags with some cleaning fluid in them then put the bag into the ultrasonic cleaner bath. This does 2 things, it keeps the bath clean and let's you clean multiple parts without them getting mixed up.

      Since both faces are cast iron You can mount it both ways, but the smart way is the one that does not require extra holes to be made :)

      Thanks for the comments, The gasket can't be turned, i have tried all options and I must keep the copper facing down to hold the liners down. The issue is that this gasket is for a Citroen Avant CV11, and that is almost the same engine, except that the CV 11 is mounted reverse and the cylinder head is mirrored .

    Enjoyed watching and looking forward to the engine start. It is a beautiful classic engine and very French!! Back in the day, there was a sealer called "Shellac", which was made from tree resin. This was good for cork and paper gaskets (I still have a bottle somewhere in my garage). Thanks for posting.

    Great video and work as always; maybe for that round hole in the gasket it would’ve been better to first use a smaller punch or bit and gradually go up to the needed size. Ended up good, though. The truck is turning out fantastically. Thank you for taking the time and effort to show us.

    Adding the Cork Carter Gasket between the Main Bearing and the block would obviously change the bearing clearance, if you cut the gasket at the edge of the Main Bearing cap( and not under the cap), you wouldn't change the clearance of the bearing and the Crank journel.

    I had to make a set of exhaust gaskets once. The drill tore the material like yours. So I drilled a small pilot hole and used the dremmel to carefully grind to final size.

    If you have to drill an extra hole in these copper asbestos gaskets it works much better if you clamp it down with a piece of wood across the area, as you found, as soon as the helix of the drill enters the copper skin it will pull it off the asbestos packing, I am sure the gasket is not symmetrical or you would have flipped it over ! Stay safe! Chris B.

    I know how you feel when something unique broke up due to your " perfect plan" 😅😂. I made up the same mistake several time. I'm still in trouble finding a way to solving the last one i made. I was tring to press out the rear drive wheel from the casting case and from the tapered axle... i set up the perfect plan by put in under the 20T press... something was moving... after one second the casting case broke up... leaving the axle inside the drive wheel... at the end of the day i found myself with one broke unique casting impossible to find ad the axle still inside the wheel... then i decide to sent the wheel to a workshop that has the special hydraulic puller (over 600$ tool) and i sent the 2 casting pieces to a cast iron welding shop. Hope for the best 🤞.
    Btw perfect work as always, see you next time! 😁

    Hi Steve. Beautiful camera work and presentation. I'm jealous. I never heard the term "carter" for an oil pan/sump before, it must be a local thing, but it was obvious what you were referring to. The motor looks immaculate. I think I would have tried using the old gasket first. The old copper/asbestos gaskets are very forgiving, especially in what would be a low performance application. My "Old Rusty", (Model A roadster) is still sitting under a tarp. I think your Old Rusty will be running before mine. all the best. Mart.

    When you drilled out the new hole, metal chips got in between the gasket layers... there was a noticeable hump in the gasket there. (Review the drilling) Didn't see you clean out the chips. That will change your water seal in that spot, and general head flatness

    Lots of well intentioned negative comments about the gasket but if you look closely a) the slot at the right hand end would still not align properly if you flipped it over but more fundamentally obvious - if you take the time to observe that b) the protrusion on the right side of the cylinder head is replicated with the gasket shape as you placed it - if you flip it over it would be hanging off the end of the left end of the cylinder head - they failed to notice this very obvious but vitally important feature, hence the ignorant negative comments - my response is they should LOOK more and say less

    • @nembrytl1000
      @nembrytl1000 4 роки тому +1

      I fail to see why "it would be hanging off the end of the left end of the cylinder head" be a "vitally important feature". The most important feature of a gasket is to seal combustion chambers, oil and water galleries, if the gasket manages to achieve this it wouldn't matter how much of the gasket protrudes outside of the cylinder head.

    For drilling that gasket you would probably be better with a brad point woodworking bit, but hopefully you will never have to do it again. Edit - should have sail lipped brad point.

      The correct tool is a sheet metal drill or a step drill. An ordinary metal drill with a point angle of say 118 degrees is the wrong tool.
