I've always been a fan of this formation because you can attack from anywhere on the field with your core philosophy and watching Coach Malzahn run this formation to assault any way Mizzou defended really made it thicken my offense. Thanks again coach for breaking it down for myself and the other coaches!!
Thanks coach, strong and quick has worked for us and there are other ways to do it. Everyone has an opinion at the end of the day do what is best for you

You have the correct way of blocking for the veer. I prefer angle blocking. Angles at the p.o.t is unexpected by the defense when running the ball, due to defending zone a lot. The first play going to the right would be: LT pick the end, protect outside pressure. LG pull around and block the ps backer, center down block the nt. RG RT double the tackle if the b gap is covered and block ws backer. If its uncovered the RT will immediately block the will. Z crack sam, Y blocks FS, T blocks corner.

If it is a 4-4 with the end inside arc to Playside ILB, if it is a 5-3 and he is covered and the tackle is covered double with tackle to Playside ILB.
Taught by the right people yes i do.
What you need to do is to have the wrs run post corner routes. One on each side. Then sit in the pocket created by the diamond formation and throw deep.
The plays go both ways, not to the strong side so please get a clue. Thank you for watching.
As a side note, I've run strong and "quick" side linemen before also. NOBODY EVER CAUGHT ON! And if they did it didn't matter. Using the linemen to their strengths is more of the key there I feel. Plus we would just call "change" and they would switch sides. But self scouting we really didn't have any of the "they only run this play behind this guy" type of stuff.
Totally on your side with that. It's about the players, not the plays.
Center works backside vs double a gap players because the frontside guard has a better solo block angle.

I like to put the y in motion out to the z
then either zone read utilizing the H or for us the (4)
Or run a play action utilizing the same look with the tail swinging to the odd side
What else do you want to see? I don't do a lot out of it because I don't want to confuse my kids. Im sure if you give it to me I can draw it!!

Coach - we see a lot of odd fronts usually a 5-2 but some 3-4 now as well.
You say in this you'd still use your gap rules, but if the front side inside LB sits and read what do you do then? If he doesn't ever attack a gap how do you get to him? Do you teach your guard to climb to him? Could you draw this up in a video vs a few odd fronts as well?

I'm not saying your wrong, just seems like a counter productive system. We run the double wing, we run both ways with similar effect. Your linemen should be athletes, on both sides they should be just as effective.
Point well taken, but I have never had 5 equal lineman in 15 years of coaching High School football. One of our best plays is QB counter which goes at what we call the weak side of the line for us. Ran it over 80 times two years ago with 1,100 yard rusher at QB. Apples and Oranges and fun to debate in my opinion.
more NFL teams should use strong and weak-side offensive lineman it creates a better matchup with the opponents defensive lineman

On the right side there will be no "Z" wideout since he will be at TE. Should the "Y" block the CB and the "T" arc block the Playside OLB?
Are you talking about the ilb on veer or inverted veer? There are other ways to handle the mike lb using packaged runs and passes to read off him
I really like your concepts which you teach in your video clinics. I'm an a split veer guy, the Diamond is a easy transition for things I would like to do. Thanks Coach!!

I am speaking in Atlanta and Tampa this year if you can make those.
Do you think there is any way that this could be used as a team's base formation? I feel like you'd have to get pretty creative with the PAP and have WRs that can win 1-on-1's, but I really like the advantages it gives to the offense. If there's no deep safeties, you have 1-on-1's. If there's even one deep safety and you have a mobile QB, you have a numbers advantage.
I have used it as a base package and it was the most effective way to move the ball and score. I also added some dimensions to the Diamond that I don't believe anybody has ever used.
Maybe the formation is symmetric, but if you have strong side linemen, then your going to run that way, at least more then the other. The apposing team will see then shift and they will figure it out.
Luke I certainly get the point but what team in the country does not run behind their best lineman? If they know who your best lineman are then they can shift that way anyway. Now i can change sides with my lineman when the ball is on the hash and not run into the boundary. It really helps with power and counter because I can specialize certain lineman to only learn 1 style of pull. The power puller can skip pull and the counter puller can trap pull. These are my opinions on high school football and you are certainly welcome to disagree.
+Thomas MacPherson Just have to agree with what was said by Luke. All you have to do is watch film and teach the defense to key any run play based on where those 2 lineman are or where the pull to. Any good linebacker can key on that. Best G on the Right, and Best T on the Left seems much more useful to me (for a right-handed quarterback). And if any kids are going to the next level they will have to learn the different techniques or blocks based on whether they are on the call side or back side. If they are always on the call side or vice versa, they aren't learning what they need to learn. Just my 2 cents
They are only called strong side and weak side lineman by position. All runs don't go behind the strong side lineman. By playing both sides and I both stances they now have the skill set to play left or right side in college.
Thomas MacPherson Oh ok, I guess that makes a little more sense then. It's definitely an interesting concept. Not sure if I'd do it, but props for thinking outside the box! The only reason why I don't think I could is because I do throw 30 to 40 times a game compared to your 5 to 7 times... I also run a pistol offense though and use this formation near the goal line. If you throw it that much then you will want your best pass protector on the backside of your QB, totally understandable.

I enjoyed your video and I am planning on running some plays out of the diamond formation this season. I Coach Middle School Football for PAL. We have a rule in our organization that we must use a tight end. When running the inverted veer to the right, with a tight end on the right side, who should the tight end block if the defense is in a 4/4? How about a 5/3?
How do you handle the mesh? How does the running back know if he is taking the ball of not? I am concerned about fumbles.
Coach- I have been running a very basic diamond package in 4th/5th grade. I am going to continue to use as my base package for 6th grade next year. I am really struggling with what scheme to use for my Oline- obviously it needs to be pretty simple. I have been using Gap/On/Down, but I feel like this year I want my OL to be able to get to the 2nd level/LB's. Especially on the first play you diagram, if the QB keeps, I worry about the Will, because my LG and C might have a tough time getting him. Thanks
At some point with a gap or zone scheme your lineman will have to climb to the second level. It takes time, reps and a lot of teaching
I do not get how you derive that conclusion luke? The set has veer both ways, inverted veer both ways, and play action both ways. Setting the strength of lineman doesnt tell the other team much of anything. The same kids are always frontside and backside of power increasing the amount of time for reps vs multiple looks.
Ive been working and working on a play calling scheme from this formation. I know it seems really simple...but to implement a whole idea, along with nomenclature...to the youth level...it needs to be straight forward, but make sense... I guess I'm having some issues with naming the plays themselves, and keeping it consistent. T4 Blast? H Veer Out? Option vs. Veer Vs. Iso play calling.
We use one or two simple words, dont overthink what to call it. Remember in games you are usually using signals and the play names are rarely used after teaching them.

What is the spacing for the X and Z receivers? Are they splitting the difference between the tackle and the sideline, or are they a certain yardage away from the tackles?
We only do 6 or 8 things out of diamond as a tempo package.

I love this coach.... and it looks like I will have the players in place to be successful next year... question... being (for me) its middle school football... when you run the inverted veer to the left... the center is looking A gap first...then Middle LB... I have found in lower levels... coaches blitz MLBs almost 80% of the time. Would you teach a different thought process for the center then?
I would try and get the ball to the Perimeter in lower level football as much as possible. Down gap schemes will help vs inside pressure

Question: If you're moving you're strong side linemen back & forth, isn't that a tel for the defense?
It only becomes a real tell if run the ball behind the same guys all the time.

Coach I need some help. I have a tough QB who is mobile and can run downhill, but can't throw consistently. I have a back/wing players who is the fastest player in the league. What is an offense formation/plays that will put these two players in good positions to make plays

Thanks for the info, but the pistol is a backfield set for us not an offense. We take all snaps with the QB'S heels at 5. It's nothing more than an alignment of the RB for us. Appreciate you watching though.
ok your qb has some long feet because in the video you state his toe are at 4 yards and in your reply you say his heels are at 5 yards sorry not trying to be a butt hole
