  • Let’s say your Amazon is screaming for attention, should you get a friend for your Amazon? If you do, one of the things you have to realize is that there may not be a lot of room left for you. Amazons create very strong bonds. On the other hand if you spend a lot of time with them, who knows?
It may be fine. Either way getting a companion Amazon would be my first choice. So the question is, should you get Another Amazon parrot? Did you get a male or female?
Personally, I would get another Amazon of the same gender. The species doesn’t matter too much as long as they are similar in size. I would get the same gender so that I didn’t have to worry about babies. Generally speaking, I think getting a companion for your Amazon parrot is a great idea!

🌴 So I had an umbrella cockatoo that I rescued years back , didn’t know much about him ,age were he came from just that we had our journey together and he passed away 5 months ago , I’m now looking to rescue another bird and would like to get a yellow nape , which makes better pets male or female , so people say that males talk more but can become more attached and can become aggressive, we’re the females bond but seem to be more ahhh moody due to egg laying and becoming more stimulated? Not ever having an Amazon what are your thoughts , I’m looking at maybe adopting a female at one of the local avian vets in my area , she’s 31 yrs old and seemed very docile, but the lady at the vets said she will be vocal at times 🤔

Very interesting. I’m glad you pointed out the fact a new addition may not be accepted. ❤️

Do you have dogs also . Can they stay together

We have a small dog- I don’t recommend it. Our dog is small and kept in a separate space. Dogs can hurt/kill parrots. If you have a dog, be very careful - they can also stress a parrot just by being around their cage.

Thanks a lot. I have a rottweiler named James and German Shepherd named Tom. James is Super friendly and wants to play with everyone including other animals like duck, goat . We have even taken him to Kaziranga National park and he played with the elephant there. As far as Tom is concerned he is very gentle and has a majestic aura. He is not as outgoing like James but friendly.
After listening your advice, maybe I should think of building an Aviary. What do you think?

Mine likes my Golden Conure, but I think he grew up with Conures because he likes him. Don't really know because we adopted him as an adult. If you spend time with your Amazons, it may be that they will still bond with you, if you get another Amazon.

Thanks so much for the response! OK, I'm going to have to think about what to do now. I would hate to lose the bond if I bought another Amazon. Also my white fronted amazon is so tiny compared to other Amazon species haha, he's maybe just a little bigger than a Sun Conure. I'll definitely get another male, It's good to know they can still bond and be buddies being the same sex. Another white fronted Amazon would be the best for him because the other Amazon species would probably be too big for him but I don't know if I would want two white fronted amazons. I've always wanted a Hahns macaw.. :p I'll have to think about it.

I think any ‘smaller’ Amazon would be good. If you get a Hahn’s, keep in mind you will likely have two birds asking for your attention.

@@ParrotBliss Ah, you're right. Two parrots begging for my attention would be the last thing I need haha. I'm looking into some other amazon species now. You've been great help. Thanks.

@@ParrotBliss I just found a 3 year old yellow naped amazon who is super tame. Steps up easily and lets me pet his head and body without a problem. Owner says he never bites. Do you think he'll be a good buddy for my white fronted amazon? 🙂

What kind of Amazon do you recommend for a first time Amazon owner? I have several other parrots but we have little experience with Amazons. We are a family of four, my husband and two kids.

Since Amazons are known for being one person birds, I would not recommend them for a family with kids.

Do yellow headed Amazon's make good pets? Anything I should know before getting one?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with them. However, general things about Amazons usually apply. Amazons create great bonds with 1 person (typically) but are hard on other people.

Will it be ok if there are 2 female amazons?
