It’s very hard to compare apples vs apples in this debate due to mastering differences. But having said that I still often find the musical performance from the vinyl medium to be very musically coherent. What do I mean by this ? I mean that my perception is that I am easily able to follow the music without having to put in a lot of effort. In comparison with digital gear I found the sound rather mechanical and dissected, lacking wholeness and integrity. It’s only when manufacturers started really attacking the problem of jitter, with quality clocking schemes did I start to get the same level of enjoyment with digital. (Early CD players were shockingly terrible with a sound like breaking glass. I upgraded a few of my CD players with upgraded aftermarket clock modules, and sonic performance was significantly enhanced.)
I know that on paper digital is better in terms of technical specifications, but I can’t seem to explain the subjective performance of vinyl playback.
They say if it measures bad but sounds good, it is good. And if it measures well but sounds bad, then you are measuring the wrong thing !!

Interesting video. I use both vinyl and digital in my system, and most of what I listen to would not require Uber resolution or a great dynamic range. In my case, my recordings are the limiting factor. Strengths and weaknesses considered, I think it is fair to say audio has been evolving with measurable improvements. Streaming is a dream come true, and I'm willing to bet early audio engineers were the first to be dreaming about such innovations for the future. It really is not -in my mind ,a competition but rather just the direction - natural/ logical evolution of audio. That said, I still like my records.

This says everything and I have been telling record collectors for nearly 40 years and with more detail and authority. Oh, how I miss those endless hours of playing with a Pixall, Zerostat and a whole boxfull of associated tools and all to no avail. Happy days!

I gave up on vinyl when I got older and could not tell the difference between my Ultra Hi End TT-Arm-MC-Phono and my Cyrus CDT-DAC.

Okay. Silly question. Which is more challenging to an amp- digital or analog? Wrong question? Im curious if this is even a consideration for manufacturers? Also- thank you! Good conversation. On my turntable with my cartridge i thought i imagined a kind of strange strain as my records come to the end of its travel- the end of the record side. Distortion?

We don’t really consider digital and analogue as different (from an amplifier perspective). Hi-res digital content might might present some challenges due to ultrasonics potentially present. It is discussed in this video: ua-cam.com/video/8zQMevxO-84/v-deo.html

Any idea when the Cyrus xr PSU will be available again. Why has it been unavailable for so long. Kind regards.

I love my Cyrus Phono Sig + PSXR2. Its a lovely Phono preamp. I've got a Cyrus streamer for digital and thats great too, but i prefer vinyl. I guess i like owning music and CDs never really did it for me.

Historically speaking, Denon and Pioneer have had good sound on their CD players. And a year or two ago marantz had good ratings on their cd player which i think cost like $500

Still, the bass on Phantom of the Opera sounds better on vinyl than on CD. it's like there's something missing on the CD edition in the base

It would to be hard to imagine how an LP could, for the reasons cited here, match the clarity focus and depth of the basses, answered by the 1st violins at the opening of Shostakovitch's 5th symphony in Andriss Nelsons' Boston recording. Just one of many examples.

There are people like Michael Fremer who talk about the depth and it's almost holographic soundscape with vinyl records. note he has very expensive speakers and other expensive audio components

    Do Cyrus sell turntables ? No ? Isn't that odd ! 🤣

    • @cyrusaudio

No, we currently do not offer turntables but we make top-notch phono stages, especially Phono Signature which coupled with PSX-R2 offers an amazing vinyl experience.

In common with most companies manufacturing amplifiers and their latest have a phono stage built in for the benefit of those who think LPs are as good.

very interesting content, but the background music is annoying and unnecessary .
