How to Fix Discord Stuck on Gray Screen (2024 Easy Fix!)

- If discord is stuck on a gray screen when you open it, there is an easy fix!
1. Open Run (Window Key + R)
2. Type "%appdata" and hit Okay
3. Delete "Discord" Folder - make sure all discord tasks are closed or it won't delete.
4. Launch Discord and sign back in!

I never even thought this was a thing, I thought uninstalling an application just gets rid of its data cache along with it. Ofc the fresh install did nothing. But this fixed it immediately, thank you!

When this started happening, I uninstalled and reinstalled thinking that would help. Nope, kept doing it. Tried this trick and nope, didn't work. Still getting the gray box despite the instructions.

Discord support told me they couldn't help and that I should install the beta of discord. They didn't even tell me what beta and how to download it, other than sending a link. I'm hoping this works.
If you're getting the “The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program” error even though you had everything closed, uninstall discord first before doing this. It works for me.

doesnt work it just occasionally goes discord gray even tho I can hear everyone and they can hear me
it fixes itself when I minimize and return it but its weird and annoying still
Same issue, guessing one of the recent updates borked it.
this is happening to me aswell, tried turning off hardware acceleration as some suggested but no success.

Thank you for this guide! I was stuck and didn't know what to do, I didnt want to relogin my account so I tried deleting the cache folder and things worked out pretty well for me
thank you for the quick fix! had this error last night and kind of freaked out. tried to reinstall and even that didn't work but now its all fixed!
TEMPORARY FIX: This happens to me many times a day. The screen will go blank right in front of my eyes. It seems to be an issue with drawing the screen or rendering it. A quick fix is to use the mouse cursor and click where the titlebar of the app "would be". Basically, click and hold on the top of the app, then with the mouse button down, just move the window around a little. This will cause the app screen to refresh and draw itself back again.
To put another way, when the screen is blank, just do what you would do if you wanted to move the app around on your screen by dragging the title bar. Even if it's full screen, you can still do this because Windows will automatically detach it from full screen mode to move it.
It's a temporary fix because it may just go blank again at some point, but it's easy drag it again to refresh. Hopefully a real fix comes around. I don't know if deleting the appdata folder fixes it permenantly, so I wanted to share this quick fix.

I had a problem where I couldn’t delete it because it said it was running, if you have the same problem I fixed it by going into task manager and deleted all instances of discord then I could re download it
Does the cache affect chat history in any way? Been getting this issue myself recently where the screen would randomly go grey and have to minimise it a few times to get it working again and want to try this but dunno if it will affect chat history

Cannot delete file when something in it is in use. While Discord was closed. Still doesn't work, but it's neither like yours. My problem is when I tab out and go back to DC it turns into a grey screen until I minimize the app once and reopen it then it's normal.

Also deleting the appdata cache does not fix it, it comes back eventually.
Only started happening in 2024, been using discord for 5+ years

Tried this solution multiple times and every time i re-open the desktop app (after folder deletion) it opens with 'updating' grey screen then opens my browser (discord) prompting me to login and the desktop app is nowhere to be found.. which i find really strange.

I had the same problem and tried your solution, and it says folder is in use, but I closed Discord, so then I went to Task Manager and ended the Discord background task and did your solution, it worked just fine, thanks bro!

So I just deleted every cache folder (of which there is 4) in the discord folder inside %appdata%, and it fixed my problem without reinstalling or having to log back in. So it might be unnecessary to delete the whole discord folder.

I've been having an issue where it opens fine but if I leave it open for awhile it does this, it fixes itself when I reopen it, but it's just highly annoying

Tried the same method, worked normally afterwards for about a day. Then returned to going to grey screen every 10 minutes on the very next day. Tried doing this method again and again but even within 30 or so minutes discord does the same grey screen issue again :/
tried this and didn't work at all, deleted all the set ups and downloads ect so idk whats going on.

For me discord keeps getting a grey screen while it is running. This fix does not help. It runs fine for a while and then goes grey. When I minimize discord and reopen it, it works normally for a time and then goes grey again. Anyone know a fix for this?

Hope this works. i have a similar issue where discord opens perfectly fine and works for a while and then i randomly get the grey screen like in the video. When i minimise discord and open it back up it works again
