- Welcome back to the final stretch of our Peach Preserve quilt journey. Today, we're going to add those finishing touches using FigTree fabrics. I'll share some handy tips and tricks, and we'll tackle Y-seams together. Let's get started!
1. Getting Ready to Finish
Make sure all your quilt blocks are done and squared up. Lay them out to finalize the arrangement and check for any last-minute tweaks.
- **Press Those Seams**: Make sure all seams are pressed flat. A pressing cloth can help avoid shiny spots on your fabric.
- **Measure Twice, Cut Once**: Double-check each block's measurements and trim if needed to keep everything consistent.
- **Cut Precisely**: Use a rotary cutter and ruler for clean, accurate cuts.
- **Keep Seams Consistent**: Aim for a ¼ inch seam allowance for all sashing and borders.
###2. Tackling Y-Seams
Y-seams, or set-in seams, can be a bit tricky but they're totally worth it. Here's how to get them right:
1. **Mark Seam Stops**: On the wrong side of your fabric, mark the seam lines stops (¼ inch from the edge) with a fabric marker.
2. **Align Pieces**: Place two pieces of fabric right sides together, lining up the edges where the seam will start.
3. **Sew the First Seam**: Sew the first seam up to the marked point, then backstitch.
4. **Add the Third Piece**: Line up the third piece of fabric, matching the marked points with the seam intersection.
5. **Sew the Second Seam**: Sew the second seam from the intersection point.
6. **Complete the Y**: Rotate the fabric and sew the final seam, starting from the intersection and backstitching at both ends.
4. Quilting and Binding
Now that your quilt top is done, it's time to quilt and bind. Pick a quilting pattern that suits your design and bind the edges for a finished look.
- **Binding**: Cut your binding strips, join them with diagonal or straight seams, and sew them to the quilt edges, mitering the corners for a neat finish.

And thank you so much for the Y seam video! It has been a long time since I tried sewing anything with Y seams, try to avoid them! But this was great and I appreciate you making it easier to accomplish!
Glad it was helpful! So happy it was helpful!
-Kelly
really enjoyed this quilt. thank you
You are so welcome! Hope you had safe travels!

Thanks for sharing. You are a great instructor!!!
You are welcome! Thank you for watching!!

Just a tip on sewing binding ends together at an angle (on the bias as you say in this video) makes the seam less noticeable on the front. The easiest way to do it for me is to layer the ends one on top of the other. From the spot they meet, measure over the width of your binding strip. Example: if your binding is 2-1/2”, measure the overlap the same and trim off the rest. Then unfold the ends and place right sides together “criss-crossed, pin in place and sew top corner to bottom corner down the center. I recommend using pins to audition the direction the binding will lay BEFORE permanently sewing the ends together. If everything looks like it will land properly in the end, sew and trim to 1/4” seam allowance. When you fold the binding after, it should lay perfectly every time the length of the rest of your quilt to attach the rest. See video by Karen Brown on how she does it.
Yes, I really like to use the Corner Clipper ruler when I join this way. :)

Krista Moser patterns use small and large 60-degree rulers. I'm finishing a top by her now. They are a challenge!
I think I "NEED" the big one too! I love these patterns! Im looking at one of hers to use up scraps as well!
-Kelly
Beautiful! I love the backing fabric! And the quilt is so pretty with the aqua! Love your determination! 🩷🩵
Thank you! 😊. I seldom give up, there were some challenging moments getting this video live, but I think I learned a few things. :)
-Kelly
Your clappers are beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊. Im so lucky hubby makes them for me :)
-Kelly
I’m still sewing my blocks and enjoying this pattern, also! Love the fabric! Thank you for all of your tips! ❤
It is a fun quilt!!
-Kelly
Just finished my strippy diamonds and moving on to assembly. Very interested to see your finish- thank you!
I watch with close captioning- every time you run the sewing machine it says APPLAUSE! 😆 Now I’m going to imagine my sewing machine clapping for me every time I sew a seam.
Wonderful! Can't wait to see it! Was such a fun one!
-Kelly
Thank you for the instructions. I actually bought the kit to go with the pattern in the box. I read through the instructions and felt like I kind of understood them, but I’m so glad I found your video on it so hopefully I won’t mess up. I loved your label you made. That was so cute. Great job!
You’re welcome 😊 glad you enjoyed it! Cant wait to see yours when you finish it :)
-Kelly
You know there are not very many things I don’t like about quilting except the Y seam. I’m getting better at it though.
@dedyrae I avoided it for awhile, but it looks so sharp!
-Kelly
Check out Krista Moser patterns. She is the designer of the ruler that you used.
Yes! Im loving these rulers. I need to land on another one to try!
-Kelly
You did wonderful; however, it looked very hard.
I thought it was going to be hard! But it was really a lot of fun :)
-Kelly
Why am I having such a hard time finishing right and left angled pieces!! UGH
Sorry! Are you left handed? I'd cut from the back of the fabric to make it easier if so.
Kelly
@@pickinstitches nope right handed! Im not sure if its a brain fart, boy am I stuck! Lol
Beautiful, I can’t wait to start this quilt. I’m still doing Bubblegum. Yours is very pretty too. My daughter loves this quilt, not sure if I’ll get to keep it 😅😊❤❤
I think the bubble gum will be so cute too! I was really torn:)
