- Keir Starmer strongly defended his deputy, Angela Rayner, after the chief constable of Greater Manchester police announced an investigation into her by labeling the accusation that Rayner lied to avoid taxes as a smear.
Despite avoiding comment on the issue previously, Starmer addressed it directly during Prime Minister's Questions, where both party leaders traded personal attacks.
Responding to Rishi Sunak's suggestion that he should focus on Rayner's tax returns instead of Liz Truss's memoir, Starmer criticised the Prime Minister and a billionaire peer for using tax avoidance schemes while smearing a working-class woman.
Kevin O’Sullivan and Alex Phillips speak with former Labour advisor Matthew Laza on who might be a replacement for Rayner in the event of her stepping down from her role.

How do you become suitably qualified to run a country department, based upon the fact that your main qualification is that you were a flatmate with another politician whilst at university? No wonder the public services are reported as failing. The qualification is a quota of black, woman, gayness, ethnicity and wokeness, but not anything to do with the actual portfolio.

The PM has been accused by Starmer of smearing Angela Rayner because of her working class background. Memories are very short because Ms Rayner has made a number of defamatory comments about MPs. I think Parliament would be a slightly better place without her.

Why do you want a woman as the Labour Party's deputy leader? I have nothing against the idea that a woman puts herself forward and is the best candidate. If we have a female deputy leader, then great, but we don't just have one for the sake of it.
