Thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial. It is one of the most in depth and informative tutorials on Agricola that I've watched. I spent 30-40 minutes reading the instructions and "self teaching/play" and I was still confused on several rules and components and had more questions than answers. You have answered my questions and I am very excited to play with family at our next get together. Even the single player version is quite fun.
After reading the instructions 2 times through, this video cleared up the rules quite a lot. Now I am off to play a solo game in preparation to teach my fellow gaming friends how to play. Thanks for this review / overview.
I must say thank you as well. I have heard many rave reviews about this game and I like the fact that it really makes you think about your strategy each time you play, making it a new game every time. I am not a board came person, but I do enjoy them. I am looking for games that are great for family and friends, that can be played when you just don't want to use electricity. I could see this game out with a big game table at a camp site during the afternoon or evening by the camp fire.
Great Video and very very helpful. I didn't realize you were out there until I bought the game and decided to take a change and google for any videos. You definitely have a talent for this. Thanks so much!!!
Fantastic work Scott. Thank you, this is the first tutorial on the game I both perfectly understood and thoroughly enjoyed watching. I decided to buy the game based on your vid.
I still think this video is the best way to learn to play Agricola, better than the rule book in any case, which I think is best used for reference. We've gotten countless hours of enjoyment out of Agricola over the years, ultimately because of this video. Thanks Scott!
Thank you SO MUCH for making this! I've been reading and re-reading the instructions today and was so confused about what happens when, and how things accumulate, and when to play cards. Probably didn't help that I was trying to play a solo 'family game' version to simplify things, but it just made the instructions even more incomprehensible. You saved me a headache, and possible regret over spending money on a game I couldn't understand!
Hey Scott, Just wanted to say thanks a bunch for making this video. I've turned down many games because of their LONG instruction manual. Watching a 20 minute *Entertaining Video is sooo much nicer. Plus, I can now just forward your videos to friends instead of having to explain the game myself (which I'm no good at). The next few games I buy will be ones you have already done videos for... you should really get paid to do this (if you dont already). Anyhow... Thanks again
You have to sign up for the Partners program, which allows UA-cam to put ads on videos, and the restrictions go away. I just learned that, so now I'm going back and putting all my old videos up here.
Great video, even though it's a few years old now. This one has finally taught me how to play my aging copy of Agricola as all of the newer videos are about the rerelease.
Just bought this, now I have to find someone to play with : ) I bought Puerto Rico a week ago, and have played it almost everyday since I got it. I think I have as much fun learning about new games as I do playing them. I played Lost Cities last year, then I bought the board game version. Last week I played Catan for the first time, and now I'm hooked on Eurogames.
Thank you Scott. That was very helpful after about 45 minutes of reading the instructions and still being somewhat confused. If you put your realistic barnyard animals up for sale at ebay and sign each of them I will pay lots of money for the.
Scott! You are the man! Thank you so much for this easy to understand tutorial - we could NOT figure the rules out ourselves. Something must get lost in the translation.
It's a mixture. This one, I bought. I do get some mailed to me. But the only way that happens is by establishing yourself as a reviewer. It was probably 2 years of doing these before I started getting any games to review.
I wondered what game my friends spoke of. 3 years after having seen one of your videos I thought of names "board games with dave, board games with- SCOTT" Thank you for doing what you do.
Even after this great explination video I'm still confused about this game. I'm going to take the game with me on the caban trip we plan next week with 3 of my other friends. No internet access ... so I try to get as much info as I can about this.
Nice informative review. Makes our family want to get this game. But it should be pronounced "A-gree-KO-la." Like the Roman general in Britain, Gnaeus Julius Agricola. See: "De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae"
@nutherefurlong Yeah, I find with first-time players, I like to give them the goal of "Try to get at least one of everything and use all of your land." If they start focusing on one thing, I'll point out how there's a scoring cap on most items. That's enough for a first-time player.
There is no way a game with so many cards is balanced though right?. It kinda comes down to luck knowing which cards are better then others or if you have a set that works well together.
LOL. Well, there is the place called "the out-side" that we share with many other living things. In fact, when we are in "the out-side", we are the guests! I know it's scary compared to "the base-ment", but it is an adventure!
Great Video and very very helpful. I didn't realize you were out there until I bought the game and decided to take a change and google for any videos. You definitely have a talent for this. Thanks so much!!!
Watching this in 2019, I already know how to play the game, but watching this gives me comfort and makes me relaxed I dont know why. Thank you Scott .
My wife and I bought Agricola in early 2010 because of this review! Thanks for years of fun, Scott :)

Bought this from reading reviews on BGG. Your overview saved soo much time in reading the instructions the first time through. Much appreciated :)

Can't wait to enjoy my new copy with friends soon! Thanks for the instructions & funny jokes, still helpful 7 years later :)
Hey man... seriously.. what an awesome description.. that's gonna make it a lot easier for me to explain it to my friends tonight.. thanks a lot
Great game, and one of Scott's best reviews.
Fantastic work Scott. Thank you, this is the first tutorial on the game I both perfectly understood and thoroughly enjoyed watching. I decided to buy the game based on your vid.
This video is SO much better then the obtuse instruction manual. So glad I found this.

Thanks for making this video! It was very difficult to find a good "how to play Agricola" video, and yours was very easy to understand and follow.

Thanks so much for this! I found the instructions impenetrable and not very good at giving a sense of the flow of the game - this is mad enlightening.
This was the first boardgame review video I ever watched and I can't believe it came out over 10 years ago. 2020 and we still out here
Matthew Shannon it was also my first video that I watched for the purpose of learning how to play a game.
Best instructions yet! Gratitude!
Loved this! Just been playing it! What's with the Lederhosen skirty things then?
woo just bought this today :) thanks for the quick runthrough! genuinly excited to play this tommorow.
go wild boar! .. i mean scott
awesome vid Scott, you cleared up some confusion I was having with the rules.
@Gerstein1 It adds quite a bit to the challenge of the game. If you find the base game too easy, then it's time to jump into that.
This is the first time seeing one of your videos. I paused at 0:06 and clicked subscribe and like.
It's one of the actions you can choose on the board, so you have to place a worker on the space, then you can play a card.
Scott! You are the man! Thank you so much for this easy to understand tutorial - we could NOT figure the rules out ourselves. Something must get lost in the translation.
@horiare Solid. The board changes so you have fewer resources, so it's been designed and balanced for each number of players. It's faster, as well.
With all the excitement about deck-building games (and I really like Thunderstone), Agricola seems like a natural for a conversion.
Best board game tutorial, thanks!

Very well done.
imagine this as Minecraft : the board game, lol
sounds like a good game, thanks for the review!
Love the video. Cough joke was great. I can see clearly though that this game is not for me. Back to Small World!
Finally breaking out my old copy of Gric. I really enjoy this tutorial.
Fun intro, I am going to teach this to a gaming club and time is of the essence. So here is a jump to the info. 2:00
What do you think of Farmers of the moor?
also check out power grid, san juan, and race for the galaxy, rftg is my favorite
I wondered what game my friends spoke of.
3 years after having seen one of your videos I thought of names
"board games with dave, board games with-
SCOTT"

Agricola was mentioned on XKCD today. Expected your number of views to suddenly bump up. LOL
@JohanKH I did do a video on Puerto Rico. Head to boardgameswithscott and search for Puerto Rico. (I can't link in these comments).
Best video on the game
Nice informative review. Makes our family want to get this game. But it should be pronounced "A-gree-KO-la." Like the Roman general in Britain, Gnaeus Julius Agricola. See: "De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae"
How does the babies for animals work? Specifically, do you get 1 baby for every 2 animals (i.e. if I have 4 sheep, do I get 2 babies or just 1)?
22:45 Hahaha, "When you're ready to kick the game up a notch, BAM you use the BAM deck!"
"This is the makin' babies card!" hahahah I love it
@skim0611 They are different. I like Agricola better, but it does take longer, especially with lots of players.
@nutherefurlong Yeah, I find with first-time players, I like to give them the goal of "Try to get at least one of everything and use all of your land." If they start focusing on one thing, I'll point out how there's a scoring cap on most items. That's enough for a first-time player.
Santa, why didn't you give me Agricola for Christmas?
in your turn, when do you have a chance to play an occupation card....???
dadinka27: if, in round 13, you make a new baby, then in round 14 you can use it to take an action.
There is no way a game with so many cards is balanced though right?. It kinda comes down to luck knowing which cards are better then others or if you have a set that works well together.
Shouldn't it be "ag - RICOLA"?
BTW, we have an Agricola street in Halifax.
Hey fellow Syracusian!
well explained. Almost as complex as ACBS
He has a bug on his finger at 10:17
This game really bugs me. Is this Agricola or Farmville?
Jethro Jed Cruz Btw nice board game.
I like Puerto Rico b/c it is faster, but Agricola is a good game as well!!!!
Farmville!
Zach Galifianakis @ 1:26
@joeglow You get, at most, one baby animal.
Number 66000! :D
same sex disks lol. by the way great review!!
Technically you don't need anyone to play with. You can solo that shit. 1 player style, son.
17:20 lols at "this is an open-minded game. when you have two same sex discs even in fron of you..."
@davidschumeister it is a-GRI-co-la. sorry
sounds great...
but why is it a board game, it should be a video game.
What is living on your finger? 10:15....yuck!
LOL. Well, there is the place called "the out-side" that we share with many other living things. In fact, when we are in "the out-side", we are the guests! I know it's scary compared to "the base-ment", but it is an adventure!
