Velocette GTP 250cc 1936 walk around and running

- Velocette made two strokes first, long before the four strokes arrived. The GTP is a ‘quality’ motorcycle and not to be confused with a post war ride to work smoker. Coil ignition, a luxury back then and a throttle controlled oil pump - thirty years BEFORE Suzuki ‘invented’ it! This example has the optional 6v lighting kit, but no speedometer, another extra cost option. Heavy external flywheel makes for a super smooth ride, even if it’s not that quick, expect no more than 50mph.
Thanks Paul, Greatly appreciated
What a great video. I’m contemplating adding a pre-war to my little collection and found this video fun and informative, wish there were more like it. Thanks.
Thank you
Shes a beauty
Hi Paul! Great bike! I have a 1934 Gtp too. I always had the doubt about cancelling the oil pump/mixing oil in gas. I always thought that the main bearing could be damaged...but now I see that you have done that. I suppose that there is no problems with the low side of the engine. Another thing that I see in your motorbike is the "modern" coil and a box behind the Battery that says 6Volt Negative Earth. Is that an electronic ignition? I´m searching a new set of points for my bike, but it is impossible to find a new set. Do you know if is there any alternative reference for a set of points to fit there? Or a electronic ignition to fit in the tiny space? Sorry for the questions here in the comments but is a very rare bike here and I want to ride it! Thanks
Hi
Thank you. Yes, no issues at all running on premix. Points are virtually impossible to get hold of and I’ve seen worn out sets selling for over £100. Ive fitted a Gammatronix unit, a simple electronic ignition that retains the points but just uses them as a switch, so they suffer almost zero wear. The Gammatronix is only about thirty pounds. HTH
I will premix the oil that way. I will fit the electronic ignition too. Thank you for your help!
Hi Paul, so is there no modification required to run on premixed fuel?
Just disconnect the throttle control to the pump I presume?
Hi Kevin, you need to remove the small gear mounted in the crankcase behind the barrel too. I run this on Silkolene classic 2t premix, a thicker oil formulated for old two strokes and use a ratio of 25:1 . Runs beautifully. Hth
50mph is fast for a 90 year old 250
Invented by Suzuki..? Didn’t Suzuki once get by in life by stealing ideas from both DKW & then later Kawasaki with the GS. It was only really Honda & Bridgestone that designed they own machines, & now other 3 now simply copy Honda’s Ideas.
Excellent bike & great point.
