    Great video from Aquarium Shed, thank you for sharing. I would say that word is getting out about cat litter and its great value.

      Yes, I found the video, and I was quite surprised that he uses four different kinds of substrate, and comes out with the findings he did. I guess now you can understand why so many people do not want the word to come out because it would destroy all these fancy substrates that are being sold.

    I can understand how the killing of a profit motive could upset the snake oil vendors; this is an age old battle. I've been burned by the hype but thanks to you, primarily and a few others. I wouldn't have to endure the price pain again.
    Thanks for your bravery!!!

    Hi Dr Novak ,another very interesting video of yours. Thank goodness I found you before I had put my goldfish into their aquarium.
    Your plant growth is very impressive . It all looks very healthy. Please could you tell me what type of snails you keep and do you have them in all of your tanks ?

    Is attapulgite kitty litter okay to use? It's pretty much all we have in Australia that's natural.

    I am trying to find kitty litter that I can use in my country. I found one with clay that completely dissolved when I tried to rinse it and the other was white bentonite that didn't dissolved but made a huge clump in the media bag like fresh wet clay. Any suggestions on what kitty litter should I look for?

  • @BassManStrikes

    So basically the clay absorbs the nutrients from the water column making it available to roots but not algea?

    Dr. Novak, I see that you are making the BCB with no laterite now. What is your dosage per gallon of iron? What brand iron do you use in the water column and do you use Brightwell Ferrion or Seachem Flourish Iron for example. In addition, when setting up a plenum/UGF do you only use litter now and forego the Flourite Red or laterite? Thank you for your research and information.

      I add iron to my aquariums once a week that then we'll feed the bacteria and plants. A lot of people cannot find Laterite and it's not very available in other countries.

    I have a question , I have a pool pond, with a DIY filter I made. So with that much volume of water along with a strong flow rate how can I create Anoxic conditions. Thank you

    i see that almost a 1/4 of the jar is filled with cat litter
    which leads me to ask :is there no limit to how much cat litter that can be put in the aquarium?
    or in other words can i put 2 inches of cat litter in a 75 g??
    this is becuase i want to save money on buying gravel
    thank you

      It's called Whiskers & Tails and they sell it here in Florida but I don't know where else they sell it. It says on the bag made in USA but it gives no address or anything else to contact the manufacture.

    Hi, is the air tubing inserted into the cat liter? Are you also using the air tubing by itself without any attachment on the end like an air stone?

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  2 роки тому +1

      That's a Lee's under gravel filter, which the air tubing is connected directly to the filter itself without an air stone.

    Hello Sir. May you explain more about the bubbling sweet point according to the water analysis? Thanks in advance.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  2 роки тому +1

      The Sweet spot is the hobbiest that is going to have to tweak and find themselves It's something that I cannot tell you because it depends on your tank size, the under-gravel filter ,the uplift tube how big it is , are you using the air stone, or you're not using an air stone, etc. etc.these things I cannot know.

    If anoxic condition is used in waste-water treatment plants for us to drink it, then it is more than good enough for my fish to swim in.

    Hi, what is the scientific name of kitty litter?

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  2 роки тому +1

      It's either going to be laterite clay or bentonite clay. It really depends on the country that you're getting it from and what clay they use.

      No, you're very wrong. It's amazing how people think they know better than the professionals. Right now, as I write this, the two fish are swimming together, not even bothering each other. But of course you know they're going to be bully to death,Right!

    Keep in mind the type of substrate should be chosen based on the type of plants you will want to grow. I would stick with kitty litter and root tabs only for plants with strong tough roots that like to dig down whereas for plants that need a lot of aeration to the roots I'd go with spherical aquasoil. Some plants would do fine in the happy middle with Walstad or even just sand and root tabs.
    This past summer I used fine sand to top off some Osmocote in a 4G bowl and it's never needed any nutrients added. Even when I removed the fish this Fall the plants continued to rapidly grow. I highly recommend you experiment with Rotala Rotundafolia in some of these experiments because it does a good job telling you how it feels without dying. It will grow visibly different under various conditions and it will struggle a lot before melting or dying. Very easy plant to save and it spreads on it's own if you take good care + CO2.

      If you remember my videos, I made mention about my anoxic filter, pond, and that I planted water, lilies, in some of the baskets. Those water lilies, along with other people who did the same thing grew just as good, if not better than the people who used planting baskets endowed with dirt and fertilizer tablets. So with that knowledge you have to ask yourself :Why did the plants like the water lilies and other aquatic plants grow so good without any fertilizer and without being endowed with dirt and/or fertilizer tablets grow better than those where it was additional to the plant baskets?
