  • Iceage frontman, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, takes us through the process of writing, how an idea takes form, and the desire to seek out dubious situations for the purpose of finding new music.
“We were quite anti-social” describing how the band formed in the early days out of spite for the music scene at the time. “We thought everything in the punk scene was garbage, the indie scene was garbage, the mainstream scene was garbage…It was sort of a frenetic reaction, and we wanted to do something that spits in the face of everything that was in the landscape at the time”.
When talking about the process of writing, Rønnenfelt explains the need to keep some sort of mystery in his own mind, in order not to analyze too much, for the risk of losing the musical output. Often times he sits down with a couple of lines in his head and a blank piece of paper, “then it’s just the third line, and you’re on a path to discovering how you feel” Rønnenfelt says.
“I write to find out how I feel, not vice versa”.
Iceage is a Danish rock band from Copenhagen. It consists of Dan Kjær Nielsen, Jakob Tvilling Pless, Johan Suurballe Wieth, Casper Morilla Fernandez and Elias Bender Rønnenfelt. The first album, ‘New Brigade’, came out in 2011. Since then, the band has released ‘You’re Nothing’ (2013), ‘Plowing Into the Field of Love’ (2014), ‘Beyondless’ (2018), and ‘Seek Shelter’ (2021). Iceage has constantly been adding to their sonic palette throughout the years, while still keeping the nerve that characterizes the band. They have gone through a great musical development from playing in the underground scene of Copenhagen to stages all over the world, cementing their status as the new carriers of punk rock.
Elias Bender Rønnenfelt was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg in connection to the Louisiana Literature Festival 2021, at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, in Humlebæk, Denmark.

Dubious situations, old paintings, insomnia, and most importantly, living in the moment. No wonder his stuff is so good. Hard to believe English is not his native tongue.

Lol wym? His English is terrible. Now don't get me wrong, iceage is one of my favorite newer bands, and this songwriting is terrific. And his English has definitely gotten better, but the first few records felt like they wrote some songs using Google translate.

They've been around for more than a decade and toured the U.S. a ton, so yeah, probably improvement. They all seem well spoken in the interviews I've watched (my favorite is Nardwuar when they were just starting out). I admit I haven't listened to much of their early stuff. Guess I will have to check it out!

@@absinthefaery I heard them when either new brigade or you're nothing came out, and since they're slightly older than me, their music kind of spoke to me and strangely (but expectedly) matured alongside me. I still enjoy their old stuff. The first is like noisy punk rock, the second is a bit more moody, more post-punk, but still noisy punk at its core, then they've started getting more serious (ie: mature). Overall, not a bad band to grow up with, and their discography as a whole is definitely worth a listen.

@@absinthefaery yup. The early stuff is full of bangers for the gym or for driving enthusiastically.

This channel should do whatever it wants, and you can watch whatever you want from it - amazing, right? You don’t have to watch every video, as you appparently have since you rank this the ”worse” of them all.
Culture doesn’t have to be about ”fine” or ”art”, but what’s human. And this is still in the spirit of the channel

I second your comment and it's okay. You've got the right to express your opinion with your free speech and it's true that this band ( not art at all to my opinion but rather only noise ) doesn't fit at all with the channel. Bravo for your honesty and free speech
