This shows the beauty of UA-cam. Not some 19 y.o. acting like they know everything, but a master craftsman without ego helping educate people. Really well done!!
the man is a true tradesman. I only have one thing to add because I'm a refractory specialist. you are supposed to use full joints on your fire brick. do not ever put just a bead on it. its totally different than regular brick. refrac needs full joints.
Firebox height is not really high enough; I build mine around 36 in. high should be a minimum of 6 inches higher than the height you cross the inside opening. The smoke chamber must be parged in this area, or it would not pass inspection.
Really an excellent video. This fellow is clear and down to Earth in his explanation/instructions. One of the best "how to and why" videos I've seen on UA-cam. A big thumbs up.
On the firebox was you using regular mortar? We always used fireclay with no joints ,30 yrs laying brick, and we was solid between liner and masonry with mortar
Very nice work! I will be following your instructions to build my outdoor fireplace, where did you buy the damper from? And how much was it? I couldn't find any for sale online
I had a Rumford fireplace in my old home many years ago. Most cozy, functional heating I ever experienced in my lifetime, so far. The best of functional art of architecture and masonry.
what would be an estimated price be to hire someone to do this? While, I want to learn to do this myself, I kinda want someone( which I don't have) to make sure I am doing the flew line and chimney itself so it vents properly.Im considering I might want to contract it out if i am in doubt
For the one in the video the estimated price was somewhere from 4,000 to 6,000 dollars for labor, material, and all but the price could vary for a number of reasons.
Best Detailed Video ever,And with lots of unique features like sloped inner firebox firebrick,Your the best teacher that explains it so that one can understand,Your the flipping " " Brick 🧱 Whisper'r "
thank you. im returning to masonry for full time work. i learned basics when i was in my 20's. built fire box last week and put my firebrick in water. the mortar dries up immediately i want to use your firebox pattern to build outdoor fireplaces. with your permission
Masonry fireplace can be the best fireplace, and out last everyrhing else!. I still have and use my blue rubble rock, fire brick fireplace, I built 1977. I Never did nothing to it except clean it and tuckpointed the top. I built my flu liner with fire bricks, its never Cracked or decayed. T ile like flu liners do over time. Square tile Flue liners last decades too. You built yours to.specs, awesome job mate!!
''There is no material on a construction project that is handled and adjusted more than that of the lowly brick or stone.'' -former brick & stone mason.
I really enjoyed your video! You're the real deal .I helped my grandpa build fireplaces but it has been 20 years,so I'm trying to refresh. I do remember him using a sponge to smooth out the flue liners and throat. also I was wondering if the two side posts work as the rebar? Otherwise rebar would run from the footing up the chimney, correct?
Great Video cant find another like it on UA-cam all of the other fireplaces video are outdoor home owner type that do not need to be inspected or comply with Chapter 10. The only thing lacking in your video is it jumps ahead to quickly and we miss the detail on the fire box construction. Can you tell me about the insulation you show I believe it is to rap the damper to space the bricks out I would like to know more as I am going to be building a very similar fire place and the more tips I have the better. Thanks again for posting the video!
I am a mason of over 27 years and this video is awesome, he did not show rebar in the interior portion of the chimney as is should be in every corner at least and continuous all the way up and also I did not hear anything about heat stop refractory mortar as it needs to be used on the fire box and flu all the way up. I would also use Cmu block instead of brick to build a chimney like this because it is faster ,less expensive and it getting covered with stone. I am not knocking his video , I am just saying that is this up to code in Oregon but he built a badass fireplace for sure!
Hey Luke, when looking down the flue wall at 13:11, i see a bed of mortar, what is that bed of mortar doing there? Is it placed on top of the damper? I totally missed this step
Where it corbels in the meat the flue?its wrong to stucco?ive only been in the game for 5 years and the 2 masons I've worked with do that. And we dont leave hollow areas in the wall neither always solid masonry.if that's what your refuting to as the chambers.
No we just haven't had to do one like that. I asked my boss about it he said that he hasn't done one that way in a while.if they ask for it or plans call for it he will but we just haven't had to. Witch is fine I haven't heard of any chimneys having a problem.theres more then one way to do skin a cat but every mason I have ever met thinks his way is the only way to go so if u thank that that's the only way to build it I'm sorry but it's been done that way in around these parts in north Carolina for a while now and no problems.
This bricky is no joke, knows his stuff. Tapping the level with the butt end of the trowel lightly is fine, just don't want to hit hard with the metal edge.
This shows the beauty of UA-cam. Not some 19 y.o. acting like they know everything, but a master craftsman without ego helping educate people. Really well done!!
Be grateful those 19 year olds post vids so boomers like you have content to view
He is just like my father Clarence Case from Phoenix, steady eddie.
Yes Furhad, what would I do without videos on shuffle dancing
Jeez what's wrong with 19 year olds
I started mason tending when I was 19.
This was one of the most helpful DIY fireplace videos I've seen. Thank you.
Geeezzzz, this guy is good. I was going to build my own, but I might just call him and have him do it for me.
Everything looks great but I noticed you didn’t parge the throat (smoke chamber)
the man is a true tradesman. I only have one thing to add because I'm a refractory specialist. you are supposed to use full joints on your fire brick. do not ever put just a bead on it. its totally different than regular brick. refrac needs full joints.
Do you need refractory mortar for a firebox?
It is truly something special to watch a master craftsman work so effortlessly. Pure amazement.
I built my first fireplace with the little experience i had and the help of these videos! Thanks for the free knowledge great sir!
Firebox height is not really high enough; I build mine around 36 in. high should be a minimum of 6 inches higher than the height you cross the inside opening. The smoke chamber must be parged in this area, or it would not pass inspection.
Bingo
Very well done, it’s good to see someone take the time to go through some simple things that can make or break a project.
The first real bricklayer i've seen here. He knows how to put the closure in.
Really an excellent video. This fellow is clear and down to Earth in his explanation/instructions.
One of the best "how to and why" videos I've seen on UA-cam.
A big thumbs up.
9:10 - what a legend.
can you please show me the steps to making the back wall of the fireplace that slant inward
On the firebox was you using regular mortar? We always used fireclay with no joints ,30 yrs laying brick, and we was solid between liner and masonry with mortar
better to install an angle iron over the damper 1/2" minimum clear leaving a space for expansion of metal damper.Nice job in any case!
You can’t put the iron on top of the damper you have to put it in the front
Got damn..this guy looks like one cool dude. I bet he can point out where a needle is somewhere in the grassland behind him
Single best video on all of UA-cam.
Best brick fireplace video for good instruction.
Love it! Please keep bringing us more great quality content. You are a wonderful instructor. Well done!
Do you get much heat pass through the back wall of the fireplace. Only asking as I plan to build mine 4" from a wooden fence
Carpet! Nice idea. Like the j bolt too. I know you make it look easy but I gotta try it.
With these videos I built my own. Never layed a brick in my life. Wish I k ew how to post a picture

What's that mix you're using for your fire brick?
Who’s idea was it to shoot the video in portrait mode? 🤷🏻♂️

You suppose to plaster inside until flue line ?
Unless I miss it
Great job 👍 hello from Kentucky mountains USA 👍 liked and subscribed

As another mason thumbing through videos for ideas an a project I’m doing this is the only one I’ve seen done correct with a fire wall. Good job!
How long will those wall tiles last?
Ties !

Now watcha wanna do is ... Watch this man closely and spend decades learning masonry and become a true craftsmen.
Thank you Luke. Best video I have ever seen on building a fireplace. Helmut .
I have a question. Did he use a form for the back of the firebox to get that slope or did they stay in place like that??
I really enjoyed your video! You're the real deal .I helped my grandpa build fireplaces but it has been 20 years,so I'm trying to refresh. Nice work Luke ... Using your video to build our fireplace in England
what mix for the firebrick?
Man I wish you were around me, I’d hire you! I am going to attempt this, wish there was a way to reach out!
Why wouldnt you have used solid concrete blocks instead of bricks?
Are you using regular mortar for the fire brick or is that high heat refactoring cement?
Sir! You are a true craftsman! Please come to Texas and build my fireplace.
One of the best series on UA-cam
Beautiful masonry work. What kind of mud did you use on the bed.
This dude is the Larry Haun of masonry
Assuming I can DIY what is the approximate cost of material?
Master of your craft! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Lol I noticed that too, I guess we just over engineer stuff here in Oregon.
Pro passing on his experience, skills, and knowledge.

Amazing to watch this craftsman work.
Hey Luke, when looking down the flue wall at 13:11, i see a bed of mortar, what is that bed of mortar doing there? Is it placed on top of the damper? I totally missed this step
I spotted that too but believe we're seeing behind the damper... go back to 8:05
Plaster the smoke chamber on the next one too since it's too late now on this one
That's how I was taught to
@@coltonnixon6660 well you were taught wrong! And use chamber tech 2000! Good luck

Charlie Galanti - You are the greatest mason of all time. Everybody knows this.
michael breslin - with 3 subscribers and 0 videos - no doubt about that !
@@michaelbreslin2403 this work isn't even close to code, maybe in Haiti
He is right. He should be using fire clay, but maybe he didn't mention it in the video
This guy's GOOD!
thanks for the video I would love to see more!!!
Excelente trabajo👍
You had me until you slammed the level with the trowel....
