I just showed my 5 year old this, she painted her first model last week and has been asking me to watch a video about painting. This one was perfect! (Beside the odd f*bomb but its nothing she hasn't heard - she said you were naughty Scott!)

Both of you did way better than most begginers, but to be fair you did have a total pro teaching you guys xD its really great seeing more new people get into the hobby. I'm always worried people will say "no its too hard im done" when its actually easier than it looks from an outside perspective. I mean its not always easy but as an outsider even a basic model like the ones you guys painted might look unattainable, but welp you guys saw how easy it was xD The painting community is the best I've seen, everyone is so friendly and welcoming so if you really get into it join Scott and John's facebook group and dont hesitate to reach out when you have questions or want feedback.

I feel so much with Curtis. Being a "perfectionist" is so hard when you are also an artist. You just need to push past it and create, whatever your medium is.
Very much true. Especially to dive into the hobby as this is one of those things where you can research all you want but the most important thing is to just get paint on the brush and put the brush to your work.. no amount of pre-learning can substitute experience.
I feel like for me it's tied to low level OCD... like if I make a mistake gluing a model together and ruin some detail I'll try to fix it with some modelling putty and obsess over it even if it isn't that visible, same with painting, and it drives me nuts.
I'd love to see periodic updates from Curtis and Nick to see how their chosen armies are coming along every now and then. Maybe if they continue to paint, see how they've progressed in skill with comparison shots from early minis to recent minis. In any case, great job helping them out, Scott. And Curtis and Nick, you guys really killed it. I hope you've found the passion and confidence to continue in the hobby.
Been a long time since the vid/comment, but I chose Tzeench. Haven't painted much since because of... life. It's FAR easier painting with someone (miniac in my case) who knows how to make an idea come to life. I struggle with having a vision, but not knowing the technique to bring it to life.
Fear of failure is hard to get over. The important thing is to just start, get paint on a brush, get that paint on a mini. Start with something that you are not afraid of messing up. Watch a few how to videos to get ideas for color schemes. It's not going to turn into an award winning paint job your first time out, but just getting that first one done and learning will instill some confidence. I say this as someone with less than 20 minis under my belt, but I am already trying out dry brushing, wet blending, and spicing up my bases.
I love how hard they are trying to genuinely do well at this based on your instruction - they are precious hobby angels we must protect them at all costs. I adored them both in this video and hope they continue the hobby! Well done Scott.
Love all of Scott's videos, but there was something about this one that really tickled my heart. Maybe I was flashing back to teaching my son to paint 20 years ago. Absolute joy.
I absolutely loved this video, I'm actually in the process of buying paints/brushes etc to start painting my Custodes and I'm kinda like the long haired dude in the fact that, I'm so worried about screwing them up that I still haven't got round to even Priming them yet. After watching this video though, I'm actually quite excited about painting them and just giving them a go!! I'm going for the Shadowkeeper colour scheme (black and gold) as I want to show all the beautiful detail of the Custodes models. I feel like you lose that detail when you go ALL gold custodes.
At the 19:48 mark he describes exactly how I used to feel in the beginning. It was hard to let that go, and it still is sometimes, but "failing" is a good thing. It lets you know you are still learning new things. And learning something new or improving your skills in a hobby that you love is a great feeling in the end, you just have to put it in a positive perspective. Great video, love your channel man. I've watched a lot of content for miniature painting to get over my anxiety of starting to paint, finding the right consistency of paint etc. This video has by far been the most helpful, just watching you give live advise and seeing two people struggle with the exact same problems as myself is really freeing. I loved this video, thanks a bunch.

one of the things that helped myself and my fellow players get over painting minis was when I got myself a 3d printer. I printed a dozen of the same model and I just threw myself into it and tried a bunch of things. Sure, some of the beginning models don't look so well but I wasn't upset because it didn't cost me anything to reprint and try a different technique. All the players at our table spent a few bucks and got the digital models of their player characters and I printed a few copies of them and they were able to print up a couple different versions and they didn't have much trouble since they didn't feel like it would be "ruined" if the paint job didn't come out like they wanted. I really enjoyed this because it reminded me of the times my friends and I would just sit around a table, paint, and just hang out.
I have watched hundreds of your videos. Used your equipment review as a reference for when I purchased my air brush and better quality brushes. This video was extremely entertaining.
I can really relate to Curtis when he said '...but I'll know that mould line is there'. That really sums up the hobby for me-it's about living up to your own standards. Well done guys 👍

Your man with the long hair took the words right out of my mouth. I've always been a perfectionist so I find it difficult accept that my first army's worth of minis will suck. I know that you can always reprime and start again, but I want a finished army to actually play with. I've started painting a couple of minis with contrast and I can understand why some people like them, but even as a beginner I've got an itch to pick up some acrylics for a neater look. I probably think too much and paint too little though 😅
I loved this format! I think having the two noobs in there helps in a number of ways. In addition to boosting my confidence -as an "advanced beginner", their candor made me feel like I was a two times Golden Demon award winner, a rugged veteran, a pro- I think they are a potent way to have you go through some basic stuff that you wouldn't otherwise touch on but which is nevertheless useful for beginners. Hopefully this is a thing you could keep doing in the future? I'd love to see these two progress, face new challenges, discover new techniques...
I’m just starting in Miniature painting. Starting with one of the Warhammer 40K starter kits that has a bunch of Necrons and few Space Marines. I’m definitely more interested personally in more Alien or Fantasy style miniatures, but this seemed like a good learning point and then can paint the things I really want when I have some practice under my belt. So I can appreciate both of your friends’ perspectives who are also new to this hobby. I appreciate this video very much.
It's so comfortable watching you teach! You're super relaxed and have zero judgement about areas of learning. Some folks explaining a better way to do things can come off arrogant or holier than tho, not you! Well done.

I have to say, I agree with Curtis. I enjoy assembling and modifying the models a lot more than painting. Mostly because I'm more confident in my abilities in moding.

a few questions 1. have you ever aquired obvious rip-offs and counterfiet minies? like ones that companies have had or could have legal actions taken by the original designer/company. 2. how would you convert a nutcracker into a boss/hero for tabletop gaming? How would you convert ornaments into minies, like santa, elves or the reigndeer that you hang off the tree. 3. have you colored minies with permanent markers only?
I want more of this. I'm a noob, and I need to get to painting more minis. Watching other noobs do it definitely gives me a bit more confidience to pick it all up and start. Granted I'm not painting armies so I've got different problems, but still getting started is the biggest thing.

I started my mini journey painting my blood angel army with your 'Eeavy Metal video. It was so instrumental in getting a solid foundation of the basic techniques I needed. Thank you for your content you are helping many fledgling painters.
Does every use the sharp side of the exacto to remove mold lines? I always use the blunt side - the sharp side has a tendency to dig in and make divots, or to bounce along the plastic.
Sharp side, but I scrape at a 90 degree angle and without too much pressure with each scrape. I may even angle the sharp edge slightly backwards to prevent it digging in.
Often, sharp side, but at an angle, so the blade is never going edge-on, into the plastic. But sometimes, if the knife has wear, I use the blunt side, to avoid digging grooves along the line of the pull.
I absolutely loved this episode! I loved the format of it. I could identify with your friends, having these basic questions. Skipping the "magic" phase that a lot of pro painters have (you guys can't help it because for you it's all logical). Excellent stuff. Loved it!
It’s a very rewarding hobby. I remember my first model, it was a terrible paint job, but I felt so proud. Each model after that gets a little better and a little better and before you know it you’re pretty good at it.
One of the best beginner tutorials ever. It was nice seeing all those questions I once had answered succinctly to eager students. Wish this was around 30+ years ago. Very cathartic to watch.
Just so you know I’ve been binge watching your videos and you (alongside several other youtubers) have inspired me to grind out 3,000pts of my 5,000pts of Minotaurs Space Marines. It’s been great, they look great, and thank you for the great content!
dont forget to talk about the difference between flush cut snips and the kind you use that leave a tiny bit of material that needs to be sanded instead of filled also it may just be me but i find using the back unsharpened side of the blade is better to scrape mold lines that way you dont damage the cutting edge of your hobby knives. lots of love and your my favorite mini channel!!!
X-acto is my absolute "Default" tool as well for removing mold lines (and ejector pin marks).. Makes quick work of a LOT of different "situations". I build model cars, but we share a lot of the same techniques. Sometimes, I'll make the blade "chatter" on purpose to leave those little marks to mimic weld beads along frame rails or other things. LOVE the channel, btw.. Been subbed for quite some time. \m/

ive had a few boardgames with minis ive wanted to paint for a few years but grew anxious about messing it up or not starting optimally so i never got them out of the mold sprue. watched painting videos now and then for a few years and in some commentplace heard of the existence of this video which is just what i needed ty

Yo dude I just wanna say a little trick I've picked up on my mini painting journey, you can use a little tamiya plastic cement on mould lines and they'll just melt in seamlessly! Saves tons of time!
just bought a couple of sets to try painting for the first time. your videos have been an excellent instructional tool, thanks a lot for all the guidance!
The suggestion that i would like to make, if you dont do it, or if you do it was not shown, when using rattle can, after finished turn can upside down and spray until the air comes clean, there is tons of additional propellant and will clear the tip of all the excess paint and you wont get clogged cans without using up the paint in them.
Brush hand touching the model with middle/ring fingers will help stabilize the hand, allowing the index and thumb to have much more control of the brush!

For folks who are scared to ruin their official models and don't want to burn much money on replacing them, I highly recommend a 3D printer. With some extra time and some investment, you can practice as many times as you want, try out color schemes to compare, and breakthrough that newbie barrier. It definitely gave me the confidence and comfort to step into the painting space.
Hey Miniac I have a question what color primer should I use if I am trying to paint a light purple body with a black carapace. I just got into warhammer and I chose Tyranids as my army so I’m trying to learn as must as I can before painting.

I have an example of the backstory point Scott made. My BlackLegion army is heavy on daemon units (both engines and troops) and has ties to a specific Daemon (that I have yet to name, wanted to make a Cherubael reference, but it felt hamhanded) which means the skin of the daemontouched units as well as any horns and spikes formed from this daemons particular blessing to be the same colour. It ties my chosen and Master of Possession nicely into the Obliterators, Possessed, and Daemon engines while still letting me keep the black and gold of the main scheme. It’s 5 am and I should have been a sleep hours ago, so if that doesn’t make sense, I’ll try to e plain it better tomorrow. 😅
I have primed and posted photos and such to reddit in -30c and it worked perfectly. Keep the can warm, I held my primer can under my armpit as I got ready to go out. Then just went out did it quick af, I was outside for a minute at most for a bigger model. Priming in the winter is totally possible. You just need to plan a bit more and be more deliberate with your technique.

I just would've told them to clip a bit back from the model on the sprue. Putting the clips right on it can cause a pit.

I can only recommend trying the back of the knife for the mold lines. In the majority of cases that will give a smoother result (no white skip marks)

2:50 YES. I paint often and love it but nothing beats seing a squad come together peice by piece, especially when u can kit bash and make them special

All I can say is they may individually may not look perfect, but when you have 10 sitting next to each other they're gonna look awesome

About viles and leaving marks, a good sanding stick with a fine grit can leave a very smooth finish that is almost the same as the bare plastic.
Great video, would love to see you bring these two back and attempt some more advanced techniques with them

I want more of this. I'm a noob, and I need to get to painting more minis. Watching other noobs do it definitely gives me a bit more confidience to pick it all up and start. Granted I'm not painting armies so I've got different problems, but still getting started is the biggest thing.

Does every use the sharp side of the exacto to remove mold lines? I always use the blunt side - the sharp side has a tendency to dig in and make divots, or to bounce along the plastic.
Dito. Always the blunt side.
Sharp side, but I scrape at a 90 degree angle and without too much pressure with each scrape. I may even angle the sharp edge slightly backwards to prevent it digging in.
Often, sharp side, but at an angle, so the blade is never going edge-on, into the plastic.
But sometimes, if the knife has wear, I use the blunt side, to avoid digging grooves along the line of the pull.
I've always held the blade at 45° to the surface, (facing away from me) then drag toward me.

It’s a very rewarding hobby. I remember my first model, it was a terrible paint job, but I felt so proud. Each model after that gets a little better and a little better and before you know it you’re pretty good at it.
One of the best beginner tutorials ever. It was nice seeing all those questions I once had answered succinctly to eager students. Wish this was around 30+ years ago. Very cathartic to watch.

dont forget to talk about the difference between flush cut snips and the kind you use that leave a tiny bit of material that needs to be sanded instead of filled also it may just be me but i find using the back unsharpened side of the blade is better to scrape mold lines that way you dont damage the cutting edge of your hobby knives. lots of love and your my favorite mini channel!!!
X-acto is my absolute "Default" tool as well for removing mold lines (and ejector pin marks).. Makes quick work of a LOT of different "situations". I build model cars, but we share a lot of the same techniques. Sometimes, I'll make the blade "chatter" on purpose to leave those little marks to mimic weld beads along frame rails or other things. LOVE the channel, btw.. Been subbed for quite some time. \m/

ive had a few boardgames with minis ive wanted to paint for a few years but grew anxious about messing it up or not starting optimally so i never got them out of the mold sprue. watched painting videos now and then for a few years and in some commentplace heard of the existence of this video which is just what i needed ty

Yo dude I just wanna say a little trick I've picked up on my mini painting journey, you can use a little tamiya plastic cement on mould lines and they'll just melt in seamlessly! Saves tons of time!

The suggestion that i would like to make, if you dont do it, or if you do it was not shown, when using rattle can, after finished turn can upside down and spray until the air comes clean, there is tons of additional propellant and will clear the tip of all the excess paint and you wont get clogged cans without using up the paint in them.

Brush hand touching the model with middle/ring fingers will help stabilize the hand, allowing the index and thumb to have much more control of the brush!

For folks who are scared to ruin their official models and don't want to burn much money on replacing them, I highly recommend a 3D printer. With some extra time and some investment, you can practice as many times as you want, try out color schemes to compare, and breakthrough that newbie barrier. It definitely gave me the confidence and comfort to step into the painting space.
Agreed! I ended up getting a sla printer and literally being able to print off a bunch of the same model takes away the fear
Hey Miniac I have a question what color primer should I use if I am trying to paint a light purple body with a black carapace. I just got into warhammer and I chose Tyranids as my army so I’m trying to learn as must as I can before painting.

I have an example of the backstory point Scott made. My BlackLegion army is heavy on daemon units (both engines and troops) and has ties to a specific Daemon (that I have yet to name, wanted to make a Cherubael reference, but it felt hamhanded) which means the skin of the daemontouched units as well as any horns and spikes formed from this daemons particular blessing to be the same colour. It ties my chosen and Master of Possession nicely into the Obliterators, Possessed, and Daemon engines while still letting me keep the black and gold of the main scheme.
It’s 5 am and I should have been a sleep hours ago, so if that doesn’t make sense, I’ll try to e plain it better tomorrow. 😅
I have primed and posted photos and such to reddit in -30c and it worked perfectly. Keep the can warm, I held my primer can under my armpit as I got ready to go out. Then just went out did it quick af, I was outside for a minute at most for a bigger model. Priming in the winter is totally possible. You just need to plan a bit more and be more deliberate with your technique.
Please do more videos like this in the future. It really helps and is very educational.
