Happy Halloween! I’m here for some villainy since October 31st is a day to celebrate it. Rothbart is a classic love to hate villain! Although I was scared when he loses his temper locking Odette away. And I was enjoying him right up until his motive decay of now wanting to rule William’s kingdom without Odette.
Something that strikes me with these old timey animations is that there's a lot more fumbling when characters fight, compared to most modern media. A lot of falling, missed strikes, so on. It makes the situation feel more intense. More of a "yeah, that'd probably happen if I was in that situation" feel. He's standing his ground and he's brave, but you can really relate to Derek's desperation here.
At 2:34 he suddenly turns around and quite abruptly says "No" as if he were very reluctant to even contemplate having to kill her. Is there some kind of deeper meaning behind this reaction or not?

Personally I've always thought of him as a blah villain - there's nothing unique or intimidating about him, he even LOOKS boring. He's nowhere near as intimidating as the villain from the ballet. Even the monster he turns into isn't as interesting as the giant owl he becomes in the original story. I recommend the book of Swan Lake by Margot Fonteyn with pictures by Trina Schart Hyman - THAT design for Rothbart is way more striking and menacing.

He could have just turned that old hag into Odette and married her to become king. Nobody would have knew the truth if he got rid of the original Odette.
Unless something caused the spell to be broken early like another wizard/witch reversing it. Besides, the kingdom might ask the fake Odette questions to prove it's really her. Questions that only the real Odette would know the answer to because they revolved around her private life.

The husband of the Queen Regnant can become King Consort. Most just choose to remain with the title of Prince Consort. Queen Victoria would have had her way a century earlier when the monarchy had a bit more power. In the modern day, it's a matter of "Pick your battles. Is it really worth fighting over?" Now, in the context of the Swan Princess, Rothbart could have become King by marrying Queen Odette. Upon marriage, he would ensure that Odette and the Nobility declare him King by right and marriage and then be recognized as Co-Rulers of equal power (Such as King William and Queen Mary Co-Rulers of England and Orange). Of course, Rothbart intended to make it clear that HE was running things once the ceremonies were over. All things considered, this could still technically happen even today by the rules of monarchy, as there are several ways to become King. 1) Be born into it (Typical), 2) Marriage (William and Mary), 3) Take it by crowning ones own self (Napoleon Bonaparte), 4) Be popularly elected by the people as their monarch (King Scarecrow of Oz), or 5) be declared by the former King as his successor (King Harold of England). Rothbart knew that taking the crown was just not the best option, because most people do not consider that legal and will fight the self-declared king over it. Marriage however, and a declaration from the Nobility would be considered legal and then Rothbart could get everything he wanted. He just needed Odette to agree to it. However... After murdering her father, that was never going to happen. Odette would have preferred to just stay a swan forever than give Rothbart her blessing after that. Even with a near perfect plan, Rothbart shot himself in the foot with his first move.

Personally I've always thought of him as a blah villain - there's nothing unique or intimidating about him, he even LOOKS boring. He's nowhere near as intimidating as the villain from the ballet. Even the monster he turns into isn't as interesting as the giant owl he becomes in the original story. I recommend the book of Swan Lake by Margot Fonteyn with pictures by Trina Schart Hyman - THAT design for Rothbart is way more striking and menacing.
