    Really good video, thanks. However, Pathfinder did NOT come up with that handle design. That is actually an older military issue style handle. I prefer them and have two older issue cups with that handle. Thanks for the video!

      +Cayoot thank you watching and for the feedback! I am now well aware from other comments that they didn't design it lol, but I also didn't say they did I just said it's what they have on their cups and the two Army/Navy stores I have in my area have only ever carried butterfly style mess kits, so my knowledge of others was really limited ya know? Thank you for the non-negative comment and I appreciate the healthy discussion!

      The Bearded Burton
      I also liked this video...
      More info:
      The slots in that handle are there so you can "insert your bayonet" to remove the cup from the fire.
      Bayonets are much different these days, but any long, thin knife blade will work.

      I do like this handle better.....not a fan of the butterfly..... This is more heavy duty.....I' m looking to get the Pathfinder set....I have two canteens my Uncle Dom gave me many many years, with a belt....and I still use it when hiking.....1 was aluminum, 1 was stainless steel........each had a cup, with this style handle, and I went and bought 2 military plastic canteens, and 2 stove stands....!!

    Oh, Bearded One . . . yeah, I'm all in with the Heavy Cover and the Mother Canteen Carrier, also. While I was at it, I ordered all the accessories: saw carrier, heavy duty strap, & Gear Roll. A Comprehensive 10 C's Scout-style bag. It's such quality gear that I don't think I'll ever have to buy it again. Great video, my friend.

    The titanium kit doesn’t come with a stove, which is quite a big disadvantage. Anyone interested, check out the standard US Army canteen cup & stove paired with Nalgene canteen. Awesome kit for around 30$.

    • @TheBeardedBurton
      @TheBeardedBurton  6 років тому

      We all have our preferences and opinions on kits like this but in my use of a USGI style canteen I rarely if ever used my stove because of the shape and height it really doesn’t do much good. It also can’t be used for much more than a elevated platform, that’s why I mentioned the folding firebox nano stove that goes with the titanium canteen very well.
      Thank you for your comment and discussion and for watching!!

    • @PeterKoperdan
      @PeterKoperdan 6 років тому +1

      I understand that when you spend hundreds of $ on a canteen kit, you are not going to downgrade to a 30$ version. However, for many people who don't want to or can't spend that much money, the setup I mention is incredibly functional. For boosting the stove's cooking performance there is a simple solution. Use an air rifle pellets tin, pour in some liquid fuel gel and set the tin on it's lid to get the flame closer to the bottom of the cup (which should snugly fit slightly inside the stove itself). When you finish cooking, the tin can be closed for transport. Compact, clean, efficient, cheap. This photos show what it looks like goo.gl/2nfSUy goo.gl/h7YEKF

      @Martyntd5 5 років тому

      I use 2 pieces of bent coathanger wire over the top of the USGI stove so the cup sits on it, instead of in it. Makes it the perfect height for the trangia. I liked it so much, that when I finally bought a pathfinder set, I used an angle grinder to slice off the top of their stove to replicate the USGI stove ...and then added coathanger wire. The stock pathfinder stove is rubbish - both versions of it.

    Take a boot blousing band and secure one of the hooks around one handle. When its open wrap it up around the handles. When you go to stow it then unravel the band and wrap it around the cup to the other handle to secure them shut.

    years ago i sewed a strap to my US canteen cover with its stainless steel canteen, canteen cup and mess kit. whod of thought i was years ahead of that generation.i prefer my US millitary set up simply because it cost me 10 bucks back then. its now 30 years old and holds its own against 200 dollar canteen sets.

      River rat U.S. soldiers and Marine's were doing the exact same thing during world war two, so that they could drink from their canteen without having to take it out of its carrier, probably got the idea from Japanese canteens in the Pacific theatre of operations as Japanese canteens were on a shoulder strap and not directly on the webbing belt.

    Great info with lots of info. I’m a canteen guy myself. I’ve had the pathfinder ss canteen kit for 3 or 4 years now and I really like it. The only real complaint I have about the pathfinder ss kit is the carrier it feels cheap and it flops around on my pack. But I’m using a old Alice pack it might be different with a molly pack. But it still feels cheap. But I’m kind of old school I’m not much on buying something new if I don’t really need it. Kind of like if it ain’t broke don’t fix it lol. Keep making the great videos.

    Good to see the differences between the two, I bought the pathfinder one, I liked the extra size (over plastic) and the fact that I could boil in it, the real killer feature for me was the wide mouth as I can clean it properly. Mine came with a different holder though, sort of a bag, with a shoulder strap and room for accessories, I have been eyeing up that titanium one though, it certainly does look the bomb, and I agree about the lid!

    • @TheBeardedBurton
      @TheBeardedBurton  6 років тому

      Thank you for watching and I agree it is nice to have the extra room. Where I am here in Texas I know two things about my pack, the weight needs to be bearable and I will carry water in with me. So for me in my area I will trade off the extra carry capacity for lighter weight when it’s full. Thank you for the feedback!

    I got the missus a dandy stainless Wolfgang Puck cookware set...heavy duty bottoms ta boot. The booklet limited the cookware to 400°. (think it was fahrenheit, lol) Titanium in ad of the HC unit says long term uses 1100° F(600°C btw) without stress/distortion.
    Many cook stuff with those collapsible/folding stoves that use sicks. I dunno how hot they get, but if the flame goes blue ima guessing it's purty hot.
    Nice vid of the li'l Mother pack BB. ima just not liking the cap exposed(no flap). My saddle bags are fiberglass.
    I don't what to jump through hoops stuffing it somewhere in transit just so it doesn't wear on stuff/other things..besides being open to debris..in that would use more water to rinse somewhere along the line.
    ~ lol, the missus is gunna get a case of the red arse when I pull the trigger on a 160.00 water bottle/beans 'n weenie pot. (-:

I bought the cup and lid first used, much cheaper than new. And almost 2 months later I bought the bottle used, also much cheaper than new. There’s a thing in this awesome country I live in called saving money, hard earned money that I have a free choice to do with what I want. By following this saving principle, I was able to buy things once and that I wanted, not you, and never worry about getting them again.

    Hi, great Review!
    Please can you tell your expiriences about cooking in the titanium cup?
    I found, that even cooking in a thin walled US stainless Cup, my food sticks very easely and get burned.
    For me, works best, a heavy duty thick walled stainless steel pot or cup, that distribute the heat well.
    I heared, that titanium direct or distribute the heat not very good, so it´s a bad choise for a cooking container.
    Thank you, greetings from Germany, Martin

    • @TheBeardedBurton
      @TheBeardedBurton  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Yes titanium is harder to cook in that thicker steel but it’s just about monitoring your heat better. As long as you don’t use high heat and move the food around you will be fine. But it is much easier to boil in since it heats up faster than stainless steel it just doesn’t hold heat as long so it cools off quicker which is nice for quick outings

      +Russell Ashburn thank you for watching! I was comparing the two most popular canteen models out there right now and their features, not their prices specifically. Both are made overseas and both are US owned companies. Heavy Cover is more expensive because of how expensive Titanium the metal is to mold and shape and treat into things like canteens, knives etc.

Many thanks to the Bearded Burton for this video, well done and very much appreciate his comments on how/where I can do better. Gratitude, Mark Laine

    Nice post Jon! Wish for that kit one day.
    Not exactly off-topic, but sort-of... I still see tons of videos, from sources I trust, advocating plastic (nalgene/etc) bottles. I don't get it. What's your take, and do you have a clue why anyone would do so? Yeah, I know, in a pinch, one can boil water in a discarded Pepsi bottle. But what do you see as why anyone would carry anything but a metal bottle?

    • @TheScoundrel70
      @TheScoundrel70 7 років тому +1

      Countryham, one scenario is where freezing is a consideration. Plastic will give as the water expands to ice. Metal containers can incur damage and develop leaks, particularly at seams. Carrying the container upside down helps as ice forms on the water's surface first, and the bottoms of most containers tend to be stronger, but once the water freezes down to a seam, there is a risk of damage. It does mean you still need a metal cup/pot/container to melt ice or snow or cook in. A plastic Nalgene type bottle can be carefully thawed if frozen, but it's a slow process. If I have unused water at night, I will heat it up, put it in a Nalgene bottle, roll it up in a dry bag for extra security, and stick it in the bottom of my sleeping bag, and it is still liquid in the morning. The plastic is less likely to leak as it cools and contracts, though the difference is negligible if your metal container has a good, tight sealing lid that will compensate. Otherwise, I will dump my containers at night, since ice/snow is not hard to find in Canada during nights when significant freezing is a concern. I will say I have found that no mater the metal, water will cool faster in a single wall metal container than a plastic one, so freezing can start sooner. Beyond that, I guess it's just personal preference and what your go-to method of water processing is, as I don't think either container will screw directly to a pump type water filter for example, where as most will attach to a Nalgene bottle. I recall there was a legal issue between Kleen Canteen and Nalgene about Kleen using the same size opening and thread pitch for exactly that compatibility reason, and Nalgene felt there was an infringement on their design. My stainless Kleen does fit on my pump filters without leaking, so either the case was resolved, or I lucked out with an early one if indeed they have had to change the design, which would be a shame.

      I have had metal containers damaged by freezing, usually the bottoms just bulged. I hammered them back flat and learned not to fill them all the way. Thanks!

    At 2:10 you stated that the pathfinder put the "T" handle on the canteen cup. As a matter of clarification....That style of handle was on the 1st cups made back in 1910 and continued to be on them till 1974. It's called a "L" Handle not a "T" Handle.

      @TheBeardedBurton  5 років тому

      Please refer to the 100 other comments previous to this where I explain the same thing to them, I misspoke and was not educated about the 60 year old history of a metal cup. I have one military surplus store near me and over the 6-7 years of me going there I had never seen a Canteen cup with this handle design, so I spoke on what I knew.
      I apologize I made a mistake.

      @@TheBeardedBurton ...Cheer up , I like to say that if I have not made at lease three mistakes during the day I'm still in bed which would be the 1st mistake of the day.
      Looking at the other side of the coin. When you said Pathfinder put the L handle on the canteen. Actually they did on their new canteen cups by not using the butterfly style. Pathfinder reverted back ( chose ) the original 1910 handles for their new canteens

    Just buy a military mess kit and canteen cook set. The Pathfinder kit is made from the cheapest, junkiest, lowest priced stainless that money can buy, and the Heavy Cover kit is for yuppies who just don't know any better, and love to pay far, far too much money because something is made of, oooooooo, ahhhhhh, gasp, titanium, which is NOT a good material for cooking. Even aluminum is better than titanium in every possible way except weight, any you pay anywhere from five to fifty dollars per ounce saved. That's just silly.

    • @TheBeardedBurton
      @TheBeardedBurton  7 років тому +13

      +James Ritchie thank you for watching and commenting, I will have to disagree with much of what you say but that's fine because that is what healthy conversations are for. That PF kit is made from China SS yes, but it is not junky. In fact it's thicker walled than some other SS I have, it has worked and been abused for years now and is fine. True real world testing disagrees with you there. As far as the HC kit goes, I felt the same until I was able to score it used in pieces and put it together slowly. It is an excellent kit. The grade of Ti they use is non-pourus, food barely sticks to it and the heat exchange is remarkable for boiling water on light hiking trips. It also doesn't leech chemicals like aluminum lol. I appreciate the comment and time but what each of us does with our money is our own business, I never once told someone you have to have this or that just merely shared my experiences as that is all I can do. Cheers!

      I love my trangia titanium pan, in combo with a trangia burner, not hotspot, thats the trick with cooking with titanium.
      I mean cooking, not boiling water for a freezedried meal.
      If it burns , just soak it for a while and it's clean in no time.
      I love my titanium. :))
