Why I don't Swear... Much and Neither Should You

  • What's wrong with #swearing? If it's wrong, is it always wrong to #swear or is there a time and a place in which it's appropriate? I would say that there is a time and a place, but if you abuse that limitation and give into the urge every time it tempts you, you will become complacent in the way you use language and people will stop paying attention to you. If every conversation is made vulgar by the use of obscenity, then how do we distinguish the occasions in which it is appropriate? Master the use of language by disciplining yourself and then you'll have the ability to appeal to strong language only when it's necessary and people will better appreciate those moments for what they are.

I never swear, and my husband did it only once in 10 years of marriage. We also don’t call names and I have to say that our conflicts are way milder from people who swear or insult. It’s one of the ways to keep marriage and friendships alive.

After my stroke when I lost the ability to speak for about 3 months and today I haven't recovered everything I have to think before I can actual speak before that process wasn't involved. Writing is still difficult and I have to here myself speak to ensure I'm writing correctly. My eloquent speaking style is forever gone and my writing is about 10 percent of what it was before. Swearing is flat out bad for you most of the time (especially if it's a habit), and I have 2 solid reasons for it.
Reason #1: It reflects poorly of you:
Swearing, especially at the workplace or any other places where you need to be well-mannered will reflect very poorly of you. It just makes you look less; less intelligent, less educated, less eloquent, less respectful and so on. Like this man mentioned in the video, swear words are designed to be provocative, so using them will make you sound ill mannered and disrespectful. Some people swear habitually, so it's hard for them to get a hold of their tongue even at the work place.
Reason #2: Swearing during an argument will escalate it. So many people get into arguments; most of the time with their significant other. Using profanity will not help the argument whatsoever, and if one has a habit of using obscene language, then they will most definitely use it in an argument, which will just escalate the situation.
People who don't swear at all resolve their arguments much more respectfully and logically.

    • @jaan08011
      @jaan08011 2 роки тому +6

agreed, great points! also people who hold their tongue really show the concept of discipline, especially in something that may seem insignificant, like profanity, bc its so easy to say those words. When we hold ourselves back even in the smallest things, we definitely do so in the bigger, more important aspects of life. It's not easy, but the results are well worth it in the long run.
I don't cuss regularly but some words do slip out occasionally, but I've realized discipline really goes a long way in life, so beginning in that aspect helps you develop that.

    • @bigbeartooth
      @bigbeartooth Рік тому

To your point 1: Sure, buddy, so what? I'll speak respectfully to grandma, and people that are respectful to me. I see no reason to advertise my intelligence, usually to be honest, I don't really speak to people at work. But that's irrelevant anyway, just google, swearing study, most articles tell you it's a sign of intelligence.
Your point 2, No, yelling escalates, If I just mutter "God Fucking Damnit" no one is going to feel offended.
I've always sworn since I could talk, I'm not changing that shit now. But then again, I live in Denmark, I don't know anyone that doesn't swear.

  • @vit.budina

It very much depends on the context. I have a vast vocabulary in Czech and English and a basic understanding of German, Spanish, and Japanese. I can speak and write in very "posh" and clean language if I decide to. However, we often use swearing with very close friends to show trust and friendliness. You can think of it as the inverse of being very polite to someone you don't know. Japanese expresses similar qualities with its 4 basic formality levels:
hyper-polite - used by employees toward customers
polite - used when talking to those who are older than you or have a higher social status
casual - used with friends and family
hypercasual/vulgar - used with very close friends
Besides, swearing is very helpful in stressful situations, as it is proven to increase tolerance to both physical and mental pain.
To sum up, controlling your language is extensively more useful than entirely omitting cusses. Nevertheless, I greatly respect those who choose not to swear at all.

Coming from a family who don't like profanity, I have to agree with this. I just find bad language to be extremely lazy and unimaginative. I don't see why far too many people use profanity other than to express anger. Not to mention, given that there are people like my mother out there who straight-up don't like bad language, I also find it EXTREMELY inconsiderate to use such language. I also do NOT find it funny, and instead find it offensive. This is why I choose to use fake profanity instead. :|

A few things to add to your list:
It's often extremely sexist. If you make a list of the swear/curse words, those that do not refer to excrement often talk about or make fun of sexual things. While there are a few that refer to males, the vast majority involve females or female parts. Even some that are supposed to refer to males involve the idea of how they are related to a female.
Most people don't even think about what they are saying when they curse, it's just a habit. I often hear people use phrases which combine curse words, and it makes you wonder if they realize what they essentially said.
Psychiatrist using utilitarian ethics to some extent focus on the positive effects of the person using the curse words and claim that it is a stress release, but not on the way others could be helped or hurt from hearing the curse words. At the end of the day, even if you don't curse, you will likely still be influenced to some degree mentally by the word choices of others.
This last one is what you sort of covered.
Lack of subject matter in curse words. Sure, there are a variety of synonyms for the same few topics, but ultimately not a lot of concepts involved in the words. To a large extent, people walk around saying the same 3 or 4 concepts over and over again without thought. People used to say that it showed a lack of vocabulary because of this limitation, but because there are so many synonyms and it becomes commonplace, the concept escapes society.

I got so furious at someone whom swore that I threatened to pull that person outside and whack that person with a brick for swearing (but did not actually do so to that person)! My temper just got violent because of my epilepsy and PMS at the same time, so I needed help from my epileptologist and maybe also an endocrinologist, but it was hard because it had only been months since I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and it took a while to confirm that my seizures could get under full control! For me, the reason I rarely swear is that it has SO MUCH MORE impact when I do. Generally speaking, I don't use language harsher than "sucks" or "freaking", maybe "crap", and then there's the occasional "damn" or "hell" when I'm riled up or I burn myself while cooking or something like that. That's usually as salty as it gets from me. If I drop an s-bomb, a-bomb, or either b-bomb, there's a reason behind it that goes beyond the normal "Victoria's worked up over something". Most people haven't heard a gd-bomb or f-bomb from me, and most never will.
The funniest part is occasionally there's people who think I'm offended by swear words and I just laugh, I'm like "if only you knew the UA-cam videos I watched as a teen, your ears would curl from the language they used". I just know if you overuse the f-bomb, it becomes the f-snap-pop (those little white things you throw on the ground that make a light snapping sound).

People who say people who don't swear are immature are clearly wrong, Like swearing does not give you emotions or it makes you mature or due to someone being a grown-up, so because someone is a grown up means they get to swear in public? Also it makes you unprofessional, I don't get on how others see swearing "good" for them. Even some of my classmates swear, I will disagree with all people who think swearing makes you mature, it doesn't make you look cool, edgy or funny at all, All it will do is it will make you immature, And WOULD you swear in a public place? This is a difficult and complex subject for me. I grew up in an environment in which people swore all the time. I also have Tourette's Syndrome, which tends to increase swearing when excited. I also often--not always but OFTEN--run in circles culturally where, if you WON'T swear, you get marked out as there being something wrong with you, like you're an elitist who thinks you're better than them, sort of thing.
We also have a schizoid culture, where in large parts of the culture, words like "bulls***" are simply everyday words, or close to it. George Carlin used to have "THe 7 Words You Can't Say On Television" but other than f*** and maybe c*** almost all of them are pretty mundane in TV and movies and video games.
I got a lesson in 1980 from a Catholic Priest on swearing at my old High School--and he was a priest, a principal, and a monk, who would often use really rough language--any word you can imagine--to get attention from boys who weren't paying attention (it was an all boys school, and BTW the boys there also tended to swear a lot). Indeed in looking back I'm sure more than one of the teachers would swear with the sole intention of breaking a class barrier, we were almost all working class kids you see.
In my current work, if I don't swear I get picked out as a wimp. That works out well, because I didn't become serious Christian til late in life and swearing was always normal for me, which also means, STOPPING DOING IT is a serious effort. I can do it but I have to be concnetrating. In reality, I have been working in recent years to do it LESS, but I still do, and in some stuff I do, I pretty much have to.
Would it surprise you to know I've won souls to Christ, or made people able to listen and consider anyway, by simply demonstrating to them that swearing does not bother me in the least,? And explaining that from a Catholic perspective it's not the words you use it's the intent and the context that matter? Well I have. I've even had young people tell me "I had no idea Catholics could be cool" and the entirety of my "cool" was being willing to say "f**k off dumba**" and "that's bullsh**" out loud.
The culture and politics of this is part of the spirituality. In reality I would agree with those who say you are best off not use coarse language because it coarsens your own soul. I see enormous truth there. Christians who avoid me or my work because of the pungeancy of the language don't upset me in the least. Although I hope those who've seen my work realize: no I really am getting people open to God JUST by showing that swearing is no big deal to me. Yet some people will likewise find it offputting.
WHat I would remember is what the priest who taught me how to swear in a civilized manner told me: the Latin Vulgate was for the Vulgar people. The Vulgar people used language the uppper caste of society did not. If you look through CHaucer, Shakespeare, and more, vulgarity is there for the common people. It is the common people we most want to reach.
Thus this discussion becomes interesting: when is it appropriate? I would say that first off, if it bothers you then just avoid it and don't do it, it's probably not the healthiest thing to be swearing anyway. But at the flip side: there are times, and contexts, and even CULTURAL AREAS, where it's more than appropriate, it's almost a requirement: among the "blue collar" set swearing is showing you're willing to join their tribe; in "white collar" it indicates you're kind of uncouth.
Context matters, it matters SOOOO much.

As I aged, it mattered less and less. The only culture I really care about now is that of the Kingdom of God. Of course I'm talking about swearing that isn't a result of Tourette's.

I grew up as a Christian being told it is wrong, having it made out to be such a taboo that I judged others for it; they made it feel like a sin and you were a bad person for swearing.
As a Christian still, that's absolute bullshit. Clearly, my feelings have changed.
Ephesians 4:29 was a common verse thrown out to discourage it, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." My home would consider "bullshit" as unwholesome talk, but it's simply a descriptive word that conveys the hollow, contradictory, and incorrect teachings I eventually found them to be.
With that verse in mind, it's important to realize this isn't so much about specific words, but INTENT. Growing up in the south, using this verse as a metric, I know so many "christians" that told me not to curse, who have filthier mouths than I do based on how they spoke about others.
Not taking the Lord's name in vain is another, and their obvious pointed finger is at G-damn, but I'd argue many christians take His name in vain in more despicable ways. They justify gross judgment, bigotry, and treatment of others by using God's name. In his name they take away healthcare, would rather orphans not be adopted by loving gay couples, drive gay youth to depression, suicide, and cast them out of families. Not to mention the amount in internal strife and pettiness I've seen within congregations.
(Any restaurant server I know dreads after-church crowds because they're often horribly rude, but in God's name, amen).
Substitute words were ok, like darn, poop, and fudge. The sentiment is the same, we all know what they're comparable to, so what is truly the difference? Truly, what is the difference between "darn it" and "damn it"? Absolutely nothing, and after that, the fragile, taboo facade of what I had been taught about bad words crumbled quickly.
What SHOULD have been far more important is the message on HOW you talk to people, the INTENT of how you're feeling. Instead, the loving "christian" teaching I received focused on shame, guilt, fear, and judgment of others.
I don't swear much, as I remain aware of sensitive circumstances and will opt for respecting an environment, not to mention having other words to more accurately convey how I'm feeling, but the entire reasoning I was raised on was simply a double standard and avenue for shame.
    Simply, it was incorrect.

I don’t wanna seem like that person who’s a naysayer for no reason, but I think the “it makes you seem unintelligent” thing is ridiculous. All the other arguments are making everything so much of a big deal, it’s frikkin exhausting. Let’s be real, 95% of whatever “profound” thing you have to say isn’t going to be an earth-shattering statement worth overthinking.
I grew up where both my parents cussed regularly to add a little “kick” to what they were saying. Cuss words give a hint of stubbornness when someone “lays down the facts”. It is sometimes used to discourage the other person from taking the matter further as the speaker had the final say. The way I was taught, vulgar language is better used as a means to convince the other person your mind won’t be changed instead of a mere “vehicle for anger”.
When “rational discussion is encouraged” with others who have that same or greater level of stubbornness, then the argument is as good as lost.
Now, it is better to curb vulgar language with people who will have a calm and rational discussions, as the exchange is not about winning but understanding. But not everyone is a pretty-prissy-goody-two-shoes like that. Oftentimes, you have to make it undeniably clear that you put your foot down on your statement by using strong language. The lack of this display of willpower is embarrassingly emasculating and is telling of a waning resolve.
Think about it: outside of the stereotype of curse words being “uneducated”, what is another idea a person using that language entails?
    Toughness.
You don’t hear a wimpy person using cuss words. They’re usually overly polite and effeminate. And when a wimp does cuss, they’re lost in a sea of four-lettered-words without any intrinsic meaning to any of their sentences. Meanwhile a mentally tough person would “lay down the facts” and punctuate with an f-bomb or an s. The point is: *cuss words add a flair to mental resilience.*

I try not to curse that much and people who curse so much are immature and don’t have self control. I have other coping skills I can do when I am angry or frustrated than to curse. I have curse when I am angry or frustrated like time to time but is not something I do on a daily basics.

Hallelujah brother I confirm this very true.
You even pointed to a deeper truth regarding the gentleman at the beginning who used profanity as a literal buffer to give himself pause... to formulate his thoughts.
These things are so wrong...I mean to the very core, that the fruit that is born from them is disgusting. It is rotten and putrid. There is nothing attractive about it.
IT'S like, "ok. you really want to have a debate about profanity?"
Here the facts dude. What does it produce? what do people regard profanities use as? how does it color you? how does it allow people to lump you into categories? it's categorically UNBECOMING and not representative of Christ. In more ways than not profanity negatively shifts reality.
