    I think it's interesting to view the transition of abilities like Treant Protector's Nature Guise and Alchemist's Greevil's Greed into passives as a tool for balance. These were aspects of the heroes' kits that were considered extremely evocative of their design, but could sometimes run up against issues in terms of how they encouraged you to level and play the hero. Alchemist is a good example of this: Greevil's Greed is a major farm accelerant, and impacts your gold gain even before you've hit your first creep due to bounty runes. Because of this, Alchemist could sometimes run into patches where the optimal choice at start was leveling a passive that granted you 0 presence in an early engagement until your next level. That's a lame experience for both the Alchemist and his team. Plus, despite how strong Alchemists other spells could sometimes be, you always had to evaluate them in comparison to another level of Greed for efficiency. Alchemist's older design either encouraged investing in a passive that could be summed up as "more gold" over any of his more engaging features, OR not prioritizing Greed in situations where it was nerfed (or just not playing Alch if it Greed was too weak). By moving the skill to an innate, it takes the burden of balancing the skill around levels away while still allowing the ability to help establish character identity.

      it's called "greevil's greed" of course there should be an option to be greedy and take it at lvl1. there's no risk and reward if it's innate

      @SadFace201 10 місяців тому +3

      While I'm fine with Valve experimenting, I would argue that sometimes having things as passives is not as bad as you think. I think having the choice of being greedy and having 0 lane presence is fun. Think about it this way, the presence of an Alchemist in a game changes how both teams view bounty runes to the point that both teams may heavily prioritize fighting over them. That's a fun dynamic.
      I think having a choice on where to dump my skillpoints and seeing how my choices ultimately affect my gameplay is fun (i.e. seeing how much faster I farm items by actively making a choice to put points into Greevil's Greed while also being crap at fighting because I have 0 points in stun).

  • @OrtiJohn
    @OrtiJohn Рік тому +29

    I feel like passives in League are usually a good way of balancing the power budget of a champion, often behind certain requirements.
    Look at Annie vs Warlock for example: Annie has a passive that gives her a stun on any ability after casting 4. Warlock straight up stuns upon casting his ult. Annie is much more flexible and has more potential stun uptime, but the flipside is that she will end up in some situations where casting a spell would be detrimental as it would take away her stun for a while. I think this is a good example, and makes her gameplay more interesting.
    Other passives, like Ekko's for example, help balance a kit towards a specific playstyle without overloading any single ability (giving too much damage to his Q would give him too much AoE, and giving too much damage to his E would remove any, already barely present, counterplay).
    There are also just token passives, but in general I think that they work well for their intended purpose.
    At the end of the day this makes League a much more straightforward game, where the gameplay loop is baked into a champion's kit instead of emerging from more situational properties of their abilities. Whether this is good or not is up for debate.

    • @TZAR_POTATO
      @TZAR_POTATO  Рік тому +13

      That's why I have Dota saying "My hero power is beyond you" AND I totally agree! Dota doesn't have much in innates, because the strength is given to the base kit directly. You're 100% on it!

    • @OrtiJohn
      @OrtiJohn Рік тому +12

      @@TZAR_POTATO Yes, and I think it's fascinating how these two philosophies ended up shaping two fairly different games. As you pointed out Dota also has more direct and impactful items to balance this power, while League constantly tries to tone down how much items can impact the core gameplay. I feel like it's a bit of a shame, really: having League's snappy and fluid gameplay combined with Dota's strategical decisionmaking would make a truly terrific game in my opinion.

    You seem to not know the origins of the innate passive design. Way back in the day, the standard Dota hero design was 3 actives and 1 passive (yes there were a lot of exceptions). From the Lol dev perspective, leveling up passives doesn't feel impactful, and they wanted players to push more buttons. Their solution was to give every hero a passive and made all level-able abilities active, sometimes with passive components. Dota now giving more innates are for making more exceptions in hero designs(Ogre int), bringing core abilities at lvl 1 (reworked Medusa, Invoker), or giving heroes a 5th ability (reworked Alchemist, Treant, Techies, Monkey King).

    8:17 "but they often give you a midgame flexibility that for the strategic mind can be very rewarding in terms of tactical expression"
    That sums up my dota experience, I like having to choose my own decision and have more flexibility ingame rather than a straight line of identical build and playstyle. Talents are simple yet crucial for your playstyle, while itemization is fluid depending on what your game needs.
    I always strive for that one moment in dota where every seconds of teamfight matters and one single decision could lead to a victory or defeat. Everything you decide so far will be tested on teamfight whether you make the right decision or not. Of course it's very punishing for small mistakes like missclicking talents or buying one more offensive item istead of defensive. But that's what I like about dota, you can try many things and when it succeed it's very rewarding

    LoL summoner spells are quality of life feature based on DOTA 1 shortcomings I think:
    Lol Teleport is DOTA teleport scroll replacement, since for a while the scroll was taking up an inventory slot
    Heal replaces Mekansm
    Flash replaces blink dagger, which gives no stats (until they added upgrades)
    Ghost is Phase Boots
    Burn is Urn of Shadows
    Cleanse is BKB/Manta
    Smite is Culling Blade
    Not sure about the rest, but these are dota item actives put in a separate two slots methinks.

    Didn't really understand the Innate Passive thing in LoL since I haven't played it, but I guess it is a "passive" that is really needed for a champion to work or to do it's role some sort of thing? I know the fact that innate passives in Dota are just there because...Why Not? really doesn't change the Hero if removed or reworked(Except Earth spirit).

    • @TZAR_POTATO

    • @peacepham7838
      @peacepham7838 Рік тому +1

      To simplify this, just say Innate Passive in LoL is a way to "execute champion/hero themes". For example, in DOTA, Wraith King theme is about undead, with his ultimate is resurrect. In LoL, Sion theme is also "kind of" undead, resurrected by hemomancy aka blood magic, which "resurrection" placed in his Innate Passive, that he has from lv1, with no skill point needed.
      Down side is that hemomancy don't "resurrect", it use blood as fuel to "reanimated" subject, so your HP bar dropped constantly after "reanimated", to balance out what seem like an ultimate in DOTA, to become a passive in League.

    • @cloudynguyen6527
      @cloudynguyen6527 7 місяців тому

      Abathur is a very unique idea exclusive to HOTS. I do think there are heroes in DOTA 2 that sit at base and let their summoned units do the work like Nature Prophet, Arc Warden and Lone Druid. However, you still need to engage in farming and combat from early to mid-game to get some power for yourself and summoned units. For Nature Prophet, you have to teleport to anywhere on the map to turn trees into minions of yours then command them from your safe distance. For Arc Warden, he creates a copy of himself, and that copy can teleport with suitable items and engage in fight/push lane without consequences. Though you have to do fast because the copy lasts for 10 or so seconds. For Lone Druid, you actually need to be close to your bear to command it so you still have that risk of being exposed to enemy. All in all, these 3 are the closest I can think of. As I said, Abathur is a very interesting and unorthodox design. It will create outcry if he actually exists in LoL or DOTA 2.

    Just a personal opinion, but while LoL has overall simpler and shorter game which is a plus for most people and especially newbie, that end up being the turn off for me.
    The game too simple that flexibility end up too little. Flexibility ramps up the complexity but it also increase replayability as mentioned in the video. You don't get stuck with specific role or playstyle on specific heroes, which can sometimes act as surprise factor and entertainment.
    The short game length change the enjoyment from "playing the game" to "winning the game". Obviously people want to win but it now feels like you can only enjoy the game by winning. I don't care if I'm on 50 win streak if 60% of the game have similar gameplay and playstyle. To make it worse, the way LoL is design to focus on skillshots and dodging with scaling abilities end up turning it into "one shot" fest. The game almost always about one shotting your enemy before they do you. One shot is bad because there's no fight and since you only control 1 hero, if you die, that's it. You're out of the game until you respawn. Imagine playing street fighter and whoever get hit by super special or whoever fail to dodge/block a hit get instant K.O.
    In Dota, you can literally get stunned for 15sec straight but on the other hand, it adds to counter play. Unless you have bad teammate or you're the bait, your team will surely come to help and potentially turn the war around. Dead with 90sec timer? In Dota, Check the game situation first. At times you may need to be ready to buyback whether to def or to rejoin the war to end the game. In LoL, uhh..guess just wait for those 90 sec I guess.

    Innate ability is not the way DotA present a hero, they go for it for simpler mechanic and balancing, but as you mentioned, innate ability usually a past skill that's getting into a new slot because they run out of option
    But, they have other way to make every hero unique, that's talent tree. If you play ability draft and not getting the skill, well, sorry, you won't get the unique buff for that hero.
    And more of that, I think the vision advantage of a hero is something that quite overlooked, like the ability to detect a ward using passive ultimate of slark
    Or like what happened with slardar, he got ms and regen buff for being in a river, that should be a separate innate ability but, well just put it in as a passive ability of his sprint!

    I highly doubt Dota is going to give every hero, or even a majority of heroes, innate skills. Innate skills only felt like they've been there to add something to the hero or open their kit up. Or because of game changes. For example, the reason Invoker's ult became innate was because talents were added in 7.00, and since his ult used to have 4 levels, if it wasnt innate, he would reach max level without all of his talents and skills maxed out. That was out of necessity.
    The recent changes with Alchemist and Ogre are for better skill level ability and flavor respectively. But even the innate for Ogre causes him to want to build items differently to take advantage of the innate.
    I dont think you should worry about too many innate skills in Dota. Literally no hero has gotten an innate skill where I can say "this would've been better as a regular skill you had to level up, or incorporated in other skills".

    Innate abilities in League is the one thing I preferred over dota. I played Lux and Jinx tho, who probably have two of the best innate abilities in league. When lux damages enemies with spells she marks them, and deals a burst of damage when she attacks them. Jinx essentially snorts a bunch of cocaine every time she gets a kill. Both have very unique game-play, and while they could just be regular passives, the fact that they are inherent and don't have to be leveled ties them much closed to the core mechanics of the hero.

      @@riveteye93 I completely agree, and that's one of the reasons I play dota. There is something weird going on with league itemization, the passives themselves aren't necessarily damning. For example, if Jinx was in dota you could play her multiple different ways as a carry, support disabler (using the rockets for aoe harass, and movement speed from kills to shut down enemies, probably building mech + rod or some other disable) or mid and use the ult to gank side lanes, using the move speed off early kills to rotate lanes.
      In dota you have a lot more build options, but I think it has to do more with items and stats than the actual abilities.

    I had a look through some of the passives that felt like 'ability add ons' and tried to justify all of them
    Morgana, Karma - To reduce redundancy in text.
    Nami, Taric, Riven - To reduce redundancy in text, plus these are really strong effects that have enough power budget to be on a passive.
    Milio - There's 2 different kinds of level scaling and rito no likey that on abilities (except gangplank who has level scaling on barrels and akali who has MINUTES SCALING????? on shroud)
    Jayce - I have a feeling that riot originally planned to keep it flexible for champion level scaling if Jayce ever needed adjusting. Jayce is also consistent enough to not need a real passive tbh

    • @TZAR_POTATO
      @TZAR_POTATO  Рік тому +1

      I like how 5 of them include "redundancy of text"
      But, I'd also point out a few more whose job seems to be just to track the number of times abilities got used, such as annie, elise, and asol, oh and I think Akali's should be in the reduncency of text category, too since it is triggered after running from enemies you hit with abilities.
      All that being said, These sort of passives are JUSTIFIED... but as I mentioned in the vid, it FEELS like they should just be part of the abilities that trigger them since they don't do anything at all on their own.
      Eh, in the end, league has 160-some champs, not all of them need to be made with fun innates. As long as the game's good, who cares right?

    • @touyakami1406
      @touyakami1406 Рік тому +2

      @@TZAR_POTATO lol i completely missed elise, there's absolutely no justification for that one other than to curb her power level
      I think with passives like annie akali brand etc, it doesn't feel like they should be part of the champs basic abilities, since they are tracking a separate minigame and not just a flat bonus (like nami taric riven milio etc).
      The biggest offender would be karma, since her passive only applies to 2 abilities (realistically its just q, rito pls move it there and give karma a new passive thx) while the rest mentioned apply to all 4 abilities (or 3 for morg)

      .. he has rotation time. Check it. All heroes have rotation time, but pangolier ignores his rotation for any actions, and phase boots active can reduce it. • @sebpaine9095
      @sebpaine9095 9 місяців тому

      Io may have a rotation time, but that's merely so that abilities that affect rotation time/the direction you're facing work (things like backstab, force staff, stone gaze and sticky napalm). Other than those cases the turn rate IO has is completely ignored, as IO can perform actions such as moving and casting abilities while turning. For example if IO is attacking medusa and she uses stone gaze, he can start moving away from the medusa immediately, but it still takes time for him to face away from medusa since the model is technically rotating as he moves. Whereas all other heroes have to rotate and then move. @@TZAR_POTATO

    With your videos I see that Dota promotes more variety in itemisation, the "talent tree", etc. However I think that lol promotes as much variety as possible within a nice, overall, balance of all the different game components. We know what happens when, for instance, assassins can go bruisers-tanks, that was disgusting to play against.

    • @TZAR_POTATO
      @TZAR_POTATO  Рік тому +8

      The problem there in League is that the game is designed around being predictable, but that means there aren't easy ways to counter off meta strats. In dota, everything is designed around both being a counter, and being countered, by something else in the item shop or in hero drafting.

    • @lamtran2328
      @lamtran2328 Рік тому +7

      Nah, champion in League buy strange items because the items is just that good, not because of Riot promoting diversity, if anything, they kill it as much as possible. ADC most of the time have the exact same item path (Only a few can goes Lethality, but thats more on the champ themselves). Pure tank can't really goes bruiser, Bruiser can, but often deadweight if they goes tank (Although tank items are often overtune as all shit, so they can build them and still do a bunch of damage). Assassin can only goes Lethality etc. The thing about dota is that the majority of the rosters can goes on multiple role, whatever you want, a carry can be a support, a support can potentially be a carry, thus, diversify the item build.
