Harryhausen was planning another fairy tale story after this one, the Aesop Fable of "The Tortoise and the Hare", but he was distracted when he was commissioned to do the Sixtopus effects for "It Came from Beneath the Sea" and so he never got around to it until the 2000s when two young animators finished it for him.
Morals in this story-Never take things for granted. You never know what you have until it's gone. Be careful what you wish for There is more to life than just money
First time I saw this in 2003 on the Serbian channel "Happy" which dubbed a whole lotta public domain stuff from cartoons to Puppettoons, Mr. Piper and these Ray Harryhausen fairy tales. Introduced me to so much deep cut stuff Cartoon Network and other channels we caught didn't show. I loved this short because of how much it humanized King Midas (I didn't know much about his story aside from the turning things into gold with his touch) and I loved how "the Stranger" who grants him the bad wish looked so sinister looking but was ultimately a force of (tough) good. Usually villains had cooler designs than heroes so I was glad to see a badass vampire looking dude ultimately just teaching the King to appreciate what he has without needing to be defeated.
Evil Dracula misleads King Midas. King Midas devastated his daughter Marigold by throwing her beautiful flower on the ground. King Midas apparently needed to get tortured to learn a lesson to stop abusing Marigold via his selfishness and greedy psychosis. He didn’t get to be King by being stupid so he must have killed plenty of innocents just like Marigold.
This version of the King Midas story has Midas's daughter and she is the heart of this tale while the Disney Silly Symphony "The Golden Touch" about King Midas doesn't have the girl and lacks the heart of the original tale.Walt Disney then realised that story had to come first and having heart to it was important! Both versions don't have the rest of the myth where Midas is punished by God Apollo and Midas gets a Jackass's ears and Midas then hides in the forest forever!
My biggest issue with the story is that never made clear as to what the limitations are of the Golden Touch. For example: if King Midas touches the ground, does that mean that every last piece of land on the face of the earth is turned into gold? What happens if he touches the ocean? With the very air around him turn into solid gold simply because it touched his hand? And exactly what would happen if he touched a piece of gold?
If he touched the land he was on, only that land would turn to gold. If he's in Greece only Greece would turn to Gold and not American, Africa, England etc as they aren't bordering/touching his land. You can feel the air but you can't touch it, grasp it, pull at it or caress it so the air is safe. If EVERYTHING he touches turns to Gold then yes, the Ocean will turn to liquid Gold. But does automatic liquid Gold exist? No it needs to be heated and melted...so I suppose it could be solid Gold which will kill all marine life and destroy ships. Lands too, destroy but not turn them to Gold (although that could be a possibility). If King Midas touches himself/his face or really any body part HE TOO will turn to Gold.
I saw this as a kid here in Iceland, I remembered it being in Icelandic, and I remembered it giving me the creeps. Didn't take long for me to find tho.
Skip, this is tremendous! I've never seen Harryhausen's fairy tales. I thought they were just unfinished scraps and experiments, not completed films. This is easily his smoothest, most expressive work. Wow!
Now that I have the RAY HARRYHAUSEN the EARLY YEARS DVD set, this short looks so beautiful with the restored colour and brighter, lighter image! I feel the sellers are charging too much for the region 1 DVDs while the region 2 DVD copies of this title sell for so little money!
And the moral of the story is... be careful what you wish for. And the other moral of the story is... beware of strangers who look like Nosferatu. Yep. You can take that one to the bank.
i saw this in nursery school when i was four. forty-three years later this still is creepy as fuck! Gave me nightmares then....especially when his daughter turned gold
Random question, anyone who owned of still owns the vhs cassette of king Midas remember the cartoon that aired before king Midas did? Was it the little brown girl or bird? I’m trying to find it on UA-cam. Please lemme know also please include the year the cassette was so I can narrow down the search. Thanks
Was I just, or "nosferactu" too cal "the strange" was more a demon than other "creature nightmare"? (squse me if I don´t write or express the idea very good, but I´m not a good speaker of english language...)
Is this the only stop-motion King Midas movie? I could swear I watched a different stop-motion King Midas movie when I was in elementary school. In the one I watched, there was another character in it who worked at the castle and witnessed everything that happened after King Midas got his golden touch power. Also, the one I remember was creepier than this one. I do enjoy the animation in this one, but I could swear I watched a different one when I was younger. Or maybe I’m just going crazy. Lol
i remember watching this all the time as a kid. its ironic that my name is midas 😂 ALSO PLEASE TELL ME THE DISK IT WAS ON IF YOU KNOW. i remember it was on a yellow case and dvd(s) with i think 200 other shorts, from looney toons to this old fireman cartoon too. please help me find it
He's a vampire/genie hybrid sorcerer. He'll perform a delightful musical number about being the best friend you ever had before pinning you to the wall & sucking on your precious, cherry colored blood. :P
I'm 24 and I grew up watching this in the 90s on my VHS along with Little Red Riding Hood
When I was younger around 1-8 I watched these. I'm still a teen but these moves hold a special place in my heart
I grew up watching this in the 90s too. 1998 to be exactly. I was 6, almost 7
Did you have that one VHS with all these shorts in them?
Does anyone remember the name of the vhs? My mom got rid of it ages ago and I can't for the life of me remember the name or any of the other videos
@@DarthYall I believe it is Giant 600 Cartoon Collection
Stop motion is a lost art. I love it.
watched this as a kid and just now remembered it, im so glad its on youtube
The perfect story to teach children "Be careful what you wish for" :)
The models, lighting and costumes are truly breathtaking but if I were a little kid I'd be terrified.
I grew up watching this in the 2000s on dvd
I'm 48 and watched this at a daycare center on a reel to reel. What a flashback!
Oh i have been looking for this for so long.
Same here
I had this on VHS when I was little. It gave me nightmares. Now when I watch this, it no longer gives me nightmares.
And so, we are told, they lived happily ever. Man i would've turned the entire castle to gold BEFORE getting any of that water.
i remember watching this as a kid and thinking it’s so creepy lol

I had this on VHS, I think it was called 50 classical cartoons but I can’t find anything on the internet about it. Does anyone else remember that vhs?
Yes, I still have them from my childhood. They had alot of great cartoons.
Omg I remember that
I’m 32 ! Haven’t seen this in over 20 years. People tell you life goes by quickly but wow.

Harryhausen animation is incredibly smooth.
I realized just lately. That voice acting in 3:45 is so god damn good.
This version is better than the Disney Silly Symphony short.
This creeped me out as a kid😂
Old but gold
Ray Harryhausen!!! This man has inspired so many artists over the years!! :0) !!!!
Nosferatu crossed with Yul Brynner from The Ten Commandments! These were always scary.

The Story Of King Midas In Orange 🧡
King Midas looks like King Friday from Mister Rogers Neighborhood.
why is a dark elf from elder scrolls here
Because they were trying to give the myth's gods a non-pagan look and they ended up as demons/monsters

What if he wore gloves? Would that stop the power?
The gloves would probably turn to gold@@goodless

When I was a kid the Greek mythology ends with him starving to death.
Soul Storm or when the cimmerians arrived and said he committed suicide
@@StormCOG I read greek mythology and in some versions he got donkey ears and he became a follower of the greek God Pan

Omg I watched this when I was a little toddler
Vampire guys pretty scary looking
For sure though, id be keeping that coin in a separate vault on its own.
I think it is a good story and has a good moral to it. Don’t be greedy or have love for money.
I remember this in elementary playing on a two reel projector. Kinda scary , we played it backwards after haha.

Stop motion is my fav
anybody wacthing this in 2020
2022 lol
Don't go to Midas to fix your car!
All they want is your money!!! 🤨
The stop-motion animation of this short film is quite close to Rankin/Bass' animation in a way.
He should’ve touched everything around him before washing his hands, therefore he’ll have both so much gold after the touch goes.
Funny how they remove any mention of Dionysus or the Olympian gods, being that this was originally a Greek Myth.
