      The Hybrid Shooter I am really looking forward for the comparison. I own the G85, in Germany it is the G81 and I am very pleased with the results I got from it. Having said that I need to admit, the G9 , the Alpha 7 III sure are tempting! Also the X-H1 is not bad, since Fuji lenses are really good.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      Yes, the A7 III seem so be the perfect package for the majority of users at he moment, it is a shame that Sony is trying to rip-off EU customer with that pricing in comparison to US prices.

    As a G85 owner I totally agree with your observations. I will be posting my year with my G85 at some point but you’ve covered the bases. There are several things I’d like to add. I want to do something with with this camera every day. It makes me happy. As opposed to my extensive Canon gear which never spoke to me my G85 is constantly yelling, “Play with me!” Yes the 4k is great but as you said the 1080 is just bloody brilliant. And let’s put things into context as to better or best. The dynamic range on most cameras now exceeds film. I can shoot broadcast quality work with the G85. I spent $75,000 on a betacam camera in 1991 for crying out loud. There is still nothing in the G85 price range that matches and that stupid Canon M50 is stillborn. And the best feature of the G85 for vlogging? It’s the audio limiter.

      Panasonic cameras are very easy to like, they always make sure that their cameras are joy to use, same is truth about my G9.

    I actually got it for the 1080p quality. It's been amazing so far. Glad you mentioned it, it's so hard to find info about 1080p recording on most cameras now! They all mention that the 4k is either oversampled, or cropped, or uses pixel binning, but then if you want to know how the 1080p is, you're left in the dark. Let us know how the a7 III 1080p is ;) If it had a flip out screen I would get it, but damn I need that screen.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому +5

      Yes, people are often asking about 1080p quality, so I try to include that in reviews even though that I personally only shoot 4K.

      even I dont get a Full HD monitor the 4K is defently better than the 1080P. Suck a lot of space but worth it

    I got my G85 a few weeks ago and I'm so happy with it. I came over from a Consumer Nikon D5300. The thing I wasn't expecting, and which really blew me away, was the sharpness of the G85. I have the 12-60mm kit lens and a 45-200mm f/4.0-5.6 Lumix G Vario lens. The main reason I switched to mirrorless was the smaller size and no longer having to deal with dust in the viewfinder. "And on the 8th day God gave us the EVF." lol Peter Paul Chato commented below that his G85 tells him to “Play with me!” I couldn't agree more. There are so many bells and whistles on the G85 that it will take me months to explore. One the easy features to grasp, and I truly love, is the "post focus" function where you can select what you want in focus.
    One of the reasons I purchased the G85 with the 12-60mm kit lens was The Hybrid Shooter's review of the camera. Now he's going to Sony!? lol That's cool as I know the Sony Mirroless System is very good. But the Sony A7 is $2000 and the G85 is now running at $800 American. So if you have the bucks go for the Sony, but if you don't take a strong look at the G7 and the G85's. You won't be sorry.

      I agree that G85 is a great camera for the money. I am not switching to anything, I already use many cameras including Panasonic G9 and Sony A6500.

    Hello! Thank you so much for the video, it really helped me to be more confused about what to purchase 😅 I am a Canon Rebel user but I need to update urgently my camera. I will use it primarily for photography, so the sensor size of the G85 concerns me in terms of pictures quality. What would you recommend for a intermediate level in terms of pictures quality, sharpness and definition, a Canon 80D, a Sony A6300 or the G85?? Thank you in advance!

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому +2

      For intermediate level it is suitable IMO. A6300 will have better image quality but the usability is not as good as with G85. G85 is a good choice overall IMO.

    I bought mine last March. I really wanted to love the Oly Em-5II- I was seduced by it's beauty and small size. But once I held one it was clear it was too small for me. I knew it wouldn't be long before I dropped it. I am happy with my choice as the G85 is easier to pick up and run with with clearer controls, better ergonomics and a much easier to navigate menu IMHO. It also helps that it's more advanced that the Em-5II being ½ generation newer. At $900 new for a weather-sealed body and very nice sealed kit lens it's a no-brainer for the beginning to intermediate photographer. Theres also the fact that you can buy excellent IS Panasonic lens without fear they will be obsolete when you upgrade.

  • @Holtenstein
    @Holtenstein 6 років тому

    Just Sold mine. I harder to use than my GH5 and harder to match. I only shoot video and use multiple cameras. The menus took more time to navigate and it felt less robust than the GH5. I bought the G85 when it came out and enjoyed using it until I received my Gh5. If you can afford the price upgrade and you need more from an M43 camera I would highly recommend the GH5.
    Also you'll still need a speed booster to get low light so keep that in mind when investing in this system.

    • @PCBVVideos
      @PCBVVideos 6 років тому

      I was toggling between the G85 and GH5 myself. As much as I'd like the GH5, I'm going G85. First and foremost is the cost difference. I can get the G85 kit for less than half the price of the GH5 body alone. Secondly, I took into consideration my final media outlet. I create videos of stuff like family vacations and outings that I downsize to 1080p and post to UA-cam and Vimeo because I have yet to be able to play a 4k video online having tried home DSL and T1 at work MULTIPLE times with zero success. I love the GH5's capacity to shoot 60fps 4k, but realistically I would shoot that less than 1% of the time. I typically shoot 24fps which is fine for panning landmarks and otherwise capturing my surroundings. Only once in a great while I would need 60fps to capture super fast action and/or something that I might want to slo-mo in post, but not enough to invest an additional $1200. I have my GoPro Hero6 if I absolutely need 4k 60fps. I do realize that there's a ton more to love about the GH5 than the 4k capabilities that I've way over simplified here, but for a video 'enthusiast' such as myself I simply could not justify the price. For what it's worth, I am jealous of you though - LOL!

    2023 says hello.
    It beat the E-M5 II for me, especially in handling and controls. Had two and the 12-60/3.5, kept one body only (with grip) but the used market is dipping so fast now I might need to sell ASAP to fund a G9 or E-M1 II upgrade within the next year, expecting both to drop below €500.
    I'm using Oly 25/1.8, 45/1.8, 14-150II/4 and adapted old glass sometimes. Also a beat up E-PL7 that just keeps going, might get the 12-32 and/or 17/1.8 for that.
    16MP is perfectly fine for my needs exactly as stated in this video. I haven't used 4k photo (8MP) for kids, pets, school events yet, if that turns out great I'll just keep it forever, sort of. Haven't done any video yet either and don't mind 1080p for that. Curious about how it'll work as run-and-gun clip shooter as I don't have a decent editing computer and time for that anyway.

    Upgraded from g7 to G80 (€460 body new), great camera and additions to the old one. The only thing I don't like is a missing focus point thumbstick.. If I want to use it with closed display (to prevent scratches and battery drain) using only evf I have to enable buttons to do it, but I lose the most common functions. Also a bit slippery the sd card opening slot.
    I like the ibis (a bit noisy) but it works fine and new shutter even mechanical is one of the most quiet on the market. 👍 You have also pal/ntsc format from factory 25/30 50/60p.. With g7 u need an hotkey reset to change from pal to ntsc. Did you measure how much battery drain with always ibis enabled? Thanks

      No, I haven't measured that, but I recommend just getting spare batteries instead, IBIS is well worth in.

    I bought the G80 for shooting video, but then got an a6500, mainly because of the hugely better autofocus. Still have the G80 but hardly ever use it. If you don't need the autofocus it is extremely good value and the Sony is more expensive, but I find it a more appealing camera in almost every way.
    Incidentally, why do some of your shots have a severe cyan tinge. It looks very odd, particularly as it is inconsistent. I notice that some people adopt a cyan/orange colour cast in an attempt to look more "cinematic".

      If I could only keep one, I would keep the a6300. Mostly because of far superior low light/high ISO performance & better AF. I had to customize picture profiles to get looks I like - out of the box, the G85 has better looking video. But anyway, if it came down to it, I would take the a6300 over the G85.

    Nonetheless it's amazing starter camera! It has so many feature's and although it isn't of the highest grade, i believe you can do it with the G80 !

      These more serious accidents may have negative effects in long term, if a bit of humidity gets into the camera, problems may occur after a year or two. If it ever happens to you again, I recommend stop using the camera wipe it with paper towel and take the lens off and let it just dry.

    4k in G9 is limited and 4k in g85 is not limited. This is why i still choose G85 for daily use. Can you explain the shutter angel in G85 ? however in the menu feature there is no shutter angle choice, but can you set 179 degree shutter angel in G85 when we take a video in 1080 60 fps ?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      Unfortunately it is not possible to set shutter angle on G85. You can set the shutter angle by changing the shutter speed.

    • @Razeea
      @Razeea 6 років тому

      of course we know that in g85 canot set shutter angle, i think you can count for the shutter angle in g85. This is my analys, if we record in 24p it means 1/ (24 fps x (360/179) = 1/ (24 fps x 2,01117) = 1/48,268 or 1/50. But if we record in 60p, the best af is 120 degree angle, so it mean 1/ (60 fps x (360/120)) = 1/ (60 fps x 3) = 1/180 shutter speed. Hope it be usefull for g85 users.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому +3

      Well, if you now it why did you ask "can you set 179 degree shutter angel in G85 when we take a video in 1080 60 fps ?" that is pretty strange.

    Hybrid shooter, something that has really bothered me with this camera (and not unique to Panasonic) how do you keep the dang focus point from moving (if you leave some aspects of touch on) when you put your face to cam for actual viewfinder shooting? I have not discovered a fix for this and it's very frustrating to regularly find my focus point not where i expect it be (centered), unless i physically moved it myself.
    Also, i found this cam regularly gets certain colors wrong and even from raw, i cannot always recover these (flowers etc). Is there a fix for this as well? Sounds like you would be the one to know.
    Finally, have you found the AF performance (photos) to be not great? This camera has really let me down in certain situation i feel should not have been a problem (not particularly tricky lighting or anything), seems to favor subjects beyond intended target point, even using like center or pin point.

    Hey, Liked & Subscribed ::))
    Thanks for these great videos.
    Would you recommend buying GH5 over G80 for paid work like basic music videos and some events and short films etc?
    If G80 is good then I would rather prefer to invest in quality glass instead of GH5 but who ever I have discussed with, all are suggesting to get a GH5 over G80. Here in the UK one can buy 2 and a half G80's for the price of one GH5 and more than 3 G80's instead of 1 GH5S.
    Also if its GH5 then would you still buy it over GH5S?
    Kindly advice.
    Cheers.

      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      For professional work I would recommend GH5 over G80 but I would also recommend Sony A7 III over Panasonic GH5 or GH5S. That and Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 will have you covered, you can take a look at my reviews: bit.ly/SonyA7IIIreview bit.ly/Tamron28-75sony

      Hello thanks very much for your quick reply and advice.
      As of now due to other commitments and investments, I think max I can go is for GH5 with 12-35 f2.8 ii etc and 2 x super fast v90 sd cards etc.
      GH5 can record 10 bit 422 internally hence it will produce good colours and better grading in post.
      I would prefer GH5S but IBIS is required for handheld shooting and also GH5S price is way too high.
      I have preordered BMPCC 4K so until then GH5 can be very useful.
      Sony setup will be over my budget plus mft lenses can be used on BMPCC 4k camera later on.
      Would you be happy with GH5 or would try for GH5S?
      Last one, kindly recommend lens options for mft body for a start.
      Thanks again.
      Regards.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      4:2:2 and ALL-I on GH5 is a gimmick, if you really want to use it, you need GH5S, but you will see very little difference and you would need very powerful computer to edit footage. I personally wouldn't buy either of those for professional work, if I really had to, I would go with GH5S and gimbal.
      Regarding the lenses, 12-35 would probably be the most suitable to start with, for professional work I would probably recommend Speedbooster and bright Canon lenses.

    • @omhari2608
      @omhari2608 6 років тому

      Thanks again.
      I am a little confused on buying a suitable kit but due to budget limitations and commitments i think I might end up buying maximum a GH5 with either 12-35 f2.8 or sigma 18-35 with speedbooster though I would have preferred G80 mainly due to its total setup price.
      I have an old Imac but need to upgrade soon.
      Cheers.

      I'm not sure about the UK, but here you can buy A7 III with Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 for about the same price as GH5 + 18-35 + speedbooster, and the A7 III + Tamron is much better combo.

    The more I see on this camera, the more I want it as a secondary to my X-T1.. I have no need to upgrade to a newer Fuji body just for video, and even if I got one it'd not have the front facing screen - the G80 goes for just around 450€ in Sweden right now, and it is becoming really hard to say no to that..

    Zdravím. Sledujem tvoje videá ale neviem, asi som to nepostrehol. Chcem sa spýtať či G80, keďže má odolné telo, pôsobí v ruke naozaj tak pevnejšie a odolne. Mám G7 a ten je príliš taký plastový by som povedal. Tlačítka vydávajú plastový zvuk a celý pôsobí tak nejak lacno. A či si myslíš že by malo význam prejsť z G7 na G80 kvôli stabilizácii a odolnosti. Mám G7 a OMD EM 5. Fotím viac menej na EM5 ale v niektorých situáciách potrebujem G7. Je mi na obtiaž nosiť 2 foťáky a preto by som chcel 1 taký, čo má funkcie z týchto dvoch :D. G7 so stabilizáciou a odolnosťou EM5 :D.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      Podľa mňa pôsobí G80 veľmi solídne, ja osobne nemám žiadne výhrady čo sa týka kvality vyhotovenia. Mať G7 a EM5 naraz asi nie je úplne ideálne pokiaľ ich z nejakého dôvodu nepotrebuješ používať v ten istý čas.

It's super time taking and you miss the shot.... As my lens have apperture directly on it, one wheel remain useless.... cant asign iso to it only come in the second menue...

    • @TheHybridShooter

    I enjoy your reviews. I have a G85 and the GH 5 and a Sony A7ll. Both of the Panasonic's produce amazing stills and just as amazing video. Yes the limitation on the G 85 is the usable ISO range. And the autofocus could be better on both of them but you learn to work with what you have and the autofocus really is not that bad. You just have to be aware under what conditions it isn't going to serve you well. the Sony A7ll is a great stills camera but no mater what the specs say not very good video
    I have also pre ordered the SonyA7lll, but I am also skeptical because its predecessor was so bad in video and also the autofocus in Bright night cityscape
    Let us hope the real camera Lives up to everybody's excitement and expectation.
    I think you're suggesting that the autofocus is slightly improved in 1080? I have always shot 4K but I will try the 1080 see if the autofocus is better. I have tried all of the autofocus options on the G 85 and have had the best luck with one area.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      Thank you, I have no doubt that A7 III will be an excellent video camere since it donwsamples 6K to 4K just like A6500 and it also has A9 autofocus system, so that won't be an issue either.
      On G85 AF is definitely better in 1080p, but it doesn't really matter to me personally, since I only shoot 4K. I also use the 1-are most of the time.

    • @N9524Q
      @N9524Q 6 років тому

      "it also has A9 autofocus system, so that won't be an issue either." Sony didn't say that? I thought Sony said that it was a totally new sensor? Just because the Number of auto focus points are the same everybody is assuming that it is the A9 system? But I really don't think Sony has said that unless I have missed something?
      Again I am skeptical that Sony would give so much in a $2000 dollars camera. I don't think Sony will correct any assumed information floating on the internet because pre orders are furious.
      they will stand on what they have said to this point and not correct what people assume. Let us hope that it's not another we got you.
      I look forward to your review when you get it. I ordered mine from B&H when they open orders at 11 Eastern standard time. Also another $2000 worth of lenses,

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      The sensor is new, but according to the technical specifications it is the same AF system and it also seems to perform equally well according to the tests and samples that I have seen so far. 2000 USD is a great price, unfortunately here in Europe it is about 2800 USD.

    İ have been using the Nikon d3100 for a long time and have used it for sports photos with the 70-300 sigma but i have recently got the lumix g85 12-60mm and with sports photos im not as pleased as i was with the Nikon d3100. İ am pleased with the video and macro or landscape pictures but when it comes to sports not so much. What do you guys think is it because of the lens that im using ,am i doing something wrong or is it just the Camera in general.?

      You would have to specify why you are not pleased.

      The Hybrid Shooter i Find the lumix’s photos allot more grainy And allot less Sharper (specifically in sports photos) even using the Same Settings as i used on the Nikon. I would expect the photos to be allot better considering that they where took in 4k.what are your suggestions.?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      Are you using 4K photo mode on G85 for shooting sport? If yes, than that is the problem, you need to use different mode. 4K photo only gives you low quality JPEG.

      Not really, the autofocus is very poor by 2022 standards.

    Hello, (I dont speak very well english, so sorry if I didn't hear it in your video) I heard that the video autofocus isn't good, but what about general autofocus (for the photos?) Thank you for your answer and the quality ou your content:)

      Autofocus in stills is very fast and reliable unless you need to track fast moving subjects.

    The G9 is just too big for mft. Hope Panasonic will release a stripped down version. G90? with the size as the old G6.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому

      G9 is intended for users who appreciate great handling more than portability. I'm not sure whether Panasonic will be able to find a stop for G95 / G90 in their current market segmentation.

    I would love to see some audio content... You seem to have a pretty good mic. Why don't you do a review on it? I have the Zoom h1 and am planning on getting the Sennheiser MKE600. Will it be a good investment?

    • @TheHybridShooter

      I am actually working on a video about my audio setup, but I know very little about audio, I honestly don't know how to test audio equipment, so I can only show what I use and how you can get same results.

    Is this good enough for astrophotography? (Without editing)

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому +1

      No, you would need very expensive lenses for astrophotography with M43 camera, there are better options for that.

    Do I get more video quality from Lumix G85 12-60 or Fujifilm X-T20 XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 R LM OIS? thx

      @@TheHybridShooter ok. Thank you anyway. Can you tell if the stills are better from G80? I had GX80 and I sell it. Cos my 12 years old Nikon D40 provides better pictures despite its 6 mega pixel chip. (but no video). I am looking for camera with at least equal stills but capable recording good qality video. Thanks in advance for you respond.

    I don `t know what to buy. I choose between gh4 and g85/g80. I do not like how g85/g80 looks like the sky. Sometimes in light areas parts are lost. I do not like this . I do car reviews. Tell me how to buy a camera.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      I recommend G88 because of the IBIS, better sharpness and less 4K crop. Picture style can be adjusted on both.

    Oh one last question. I looked online and found that the G85 had a panning issue due to the IBIS. Apparently this was fixed with a firmware update. Have you had any issues panning with this camera as some test have shown it is not as smooth as it should be

    • @TheHybridShooter

      I bought the G85 after the update so I haven't had any issues with that.

      The Hybrid Shooter Thank you! Buying it today after waiting a year for it go down in price. I really wanted to get the A6300 as price wise it’s similar to the G85 but the overheating, lack of flip screen and IBIS was a deal breaker for me. I know the A6500 is better but it’s way too expensive for me. Your videos helped a lot in me making the leap to Panasonic :)

      when you can count 179 degree of your setting, it will do. So thats why i ask it to hybrid shooter about it

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 років тому +1

      It is not possible to set shutter angle on G9 or G85, so I can only change the shutter speed and as I wrote I don't see consistent improvement on my PAL G9 and PAL G80.
