I know this review is now 4 years old but you're the first one to talk about the pre amps and gain issues and hearing what you said is leading me to buy a G85 in late 2023 so I can start working in 4K.... THANKS !!
I bought a brand new G85 last week; for $678. I had been looking for a used GH4 for around that money, but reviews like yours helped the decision. I have 4 GX85s in the studio, hooked up to an ATEM mixer. These shoot great 1080p/30 video, but have no forward-facing screens, so setting up a solo shoot is a PITA. I will report back once I've set it up and used it. Could be the video/still bargain of the decade.
I sold my 3 G7's and bought 3 G85s. Best decision ever! IBIS, no 4g 4k record file size and unlimited recording is awesome! I shoot wedding videos with my gear
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I think the G80, unlike the G85, doesn't have none stop recording- something to do with European recording laws. Apart from that, they're the same camera.

I got this camera as a gift. It produces film like quality video at 4K 24. I had to figure out the auto focus but it works flawlessy in tracking mode and does some nice focus pulls which has been a great discovery! The photos it takes are professional quality. I think there is a lot of newer cameras that have updated technology but this little camera packs a powerful punch. It’s even cheaper now and would make a great starter camera for anyone on a budget.
I switched from Canon to Panasonic for the reason of having IBIS. Biggest challenge is that I can't get used to Lumix colours but hopefully I will find the way to colour correct it in post. Thanks for making your video, it helped me a bit to understand my new camera.

Companies release new products all the time but that doesn't mean they always have the same or better functionality or picture quality. For example Panasonic just released more new cameras and their functionality sucks for video purposes. So while they release new products usually some are always flawed in some ways.
What lense do I need? I would mainly be using it for general images and video for you tube. So the lense (s) would be one for landscape but more often talking heads.

The Panasonic GH5 I think. The autofocus on one spot mode is a lot better than it's ever been finally. I use the same one spot auto focus on the G85. I think when I shot this I hadn't opened the box up on the new camera. :-)
My wife and I are thinking about the same thing. We are more inclined to buy the Panasonic G85 instead of the Canon M50 because of its in body stabilization and better 4k video.
But autofocus on the M50 is much better as is the quality of color straight out of the camera. Not to mention the number of megapixels. 4K still good too.
PAL and NTSC is really irrelivatn for online content. If you're making content for youtube, 30 FPS is the CORRECT frame rate (sadly, i notice you are uploading at 25 fps). This is a good review. Good to see a comparison from someone who uses both the G85 and GH5.
There's no "correct" UA-cam frame rate. People who make movies upload in 24p, those who live in PAL region upload in 25 or 50. The reason behind this is you will not suffer light flickering thanks to 50 vs 60 Hz power frequencies. If I shoot at 30 frames per second here you will clearly see the lights refresh rate flicker. (depending on the light). You can film at those frame rates outside but indoors are where the problems strike. I've been all over the world and the frame rates vary because of this exact problem. :-) Hope this helps.
@@JeffBourke 24 fps is every movie in the history of film lol. I'm sure you've watched a few on your computer monitor over the years. 😆 haha. There are so many UA-camrs who shoot in 24p and I am not one of them.
Geeky Nerdy Techy yeah. It’s a weird situation. Film makers shoot 24 FPS and it gets displayed at 24 fps in the cinema. I think it’s really bizarre that so many youtubers shoot at 24 when the most common displays are 60 FPS. Shooting 30 FPS really is the ideal UA-cam frame rate. Because you can still use the 1/50 refresh rate to give cinematic Motion blur. Just my 2 cents.
@Steven Avery Guilty - Brendan Dassey Innocent There is no way that dividing 24 fps into a 60fps monitor looks better than dividing 30 into 30. 24fps creates no motion blur. The motion blur is from the camera shutter time. You can use the exact same shutter time and create the exact same motion blur by filming at 30 fps. IF you are creating cinema to be displayed on a 24fps projecter THEN in THAT situation, 24 fps looks better. For content that is created for youtube - 30 fps and 60fps are the correct framerates to use.
I haven't used that lens but odds are you want an f/3.5 or higher so you don't over-expose if it's really sunny. G85 is a great photography camera I took it to Denmark and Sweden last year and it was phenomenal for me - just point and click.
M43 it’s a great system for sunny days. And it’s a great system for tele lenses. Effective focal length is double because of the crop factor. And the lenses have only very small weight.
Card size? Battery depletion? I have a huge card and 3 batteries. Have not done much video. It seems to use up batteries quickly compared to a dmz 750 i owned.
I m cinematographer I buy new G85 before 2 months I shoot on it a Tv series there is big problam in That camera . The G85 is not a good focus at the time to shoot in fix frame it's a big problam it's change its focus menu time at the time of fix frame shoot . Plz chaque it's problam
It does unlimited recording on the G85 (AU/US/CANADA) the EU models have a limit for some weird reason. :-) Make sure you get the SDXC cards as well. ua-cam.com/video/-0O02pCH2Ao/v-deo.html
Hey, I have the same issue here. Will you also consider getting the G95 or GH5 or G9? The IBIS on G9 is insane but it has limitation on recording time.
danyal visuals yes. Picture quality wise it’s like a GH5. A good prime lens is the 25mm f1.7. Most of the Panasonic lenses (non-Leica) are somewhat affordable minus some of their really small prime lenses.

👍👍👍👍👍 Thank you. Very good explanation. Purchasing.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Such great cameras!
#11- durable enough to kill the giant bugs in Australia with it
wich camera and lens did you used to record this video? AF working well =)
The Panasonic GH5 I think. The autofocus on one spot mode is a lot better than it's ever been finally. I use the same one spot auto focus on the G85. I think when I shot this I hadn't opened the box up on the new camera. :-)
Ok sir
Did you use your first G85 to record this video? Cause if you did, the autofocus was very good!
well done video, thanks!
Thinking about getting this instead of the m50
My wife and I are thinking about the same thing. We are more inclined to buy the Panasonic G85 instead of the Canon M50 because of its in body stabilization and better 4k video.
But autofocus on the M50 is much better as is the quality of color straight out of the camera. Not to mention the number of megapixels. 4K still good too.
@@EPHONIC but at 4k there's no dpaf and native lenses aren't many
How r they for photography though
How can i get picture profile like the sony a6300 and 6500,is there anyway to get slog vlog and etc?
Shoot in Cine-D the I’m pretty certain you can grade it with that flat profile.
Wohoooo i know you man,😂 this your another channel, and realy love it
Hey, thanks a lot! :-)
how does it compare to the G9
Geeky Nerdy Techy naaaah. 24 FPS doesn’t scale nicely to a 60hz monitor. Half the frames are doubled and half are tripled.
Isn’t it a bit dangerous to have such big file size is an MP4? The danger of losing everything is very high.
What about battery life?
What are your thoughts of the G85 with the Lumix 100-400mm for an African safari?
I haven't used that lens but odds are you want an f/3.5 or higher so you don't over-expose if it's really sunny. G85 is a great photography camera I took it to Denmark and Sweden last year and it was phenomenal for me - just point and click.
Appreciate your imput. Thanks.
M43 it’s a great system for sunny days. And it’s a great system for tele lenses. Effective focal length is double because of the crop factor. And the lenses have only very small weight.
EU version of G85, the G81 (just different name) is limited to 29:59 recording time!
Here's 10 reasons why I purchased a second Panasonic Lumix G85 mirrorless camera.
Is it good for low-light photography
It's not great. Most M43 style cameras won't be as good as full frame but if you get a f1.4 - f1.7 lens you will have okay results.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks
What is your main channel?
Steven Avery Guilty - Brendan Dassey Innocent thanks
this is unlimited recording right? no 30 minute beef?
It does unlimited recording on the G85 (AU/US/CANADA) the EU models have a limit for some weird reason. :-) Make sure you get the SDXC cards as well. ua-cam.com/video/-0O02pCH2Ao/v-deo.html
Should I buy this in 2019?
Hey, I have the same issue here. Will you also consider getting the G95 or GH5 or G9? The IBIS on G9 is insane but it has limitation on recording time.
Yea dudes, if you want to start film making, either the g7 and the g85 are strong options for beginners even in 2019.
I’m buying this camera in 2020, it has all the specs 4K, flip screen, ibis, don’t get caught up on the year of the camera.
hell yeah i shoot my youtube videos with it. going to be shooting short films soon too.
DAY TODAY WITH VIKAS yep!! Got mine in 2019 and absolutely love it
How's the auto focus?
Usable behind the camera and not great in front of it.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy thank you
Nice couch
haha thanks miss!
4K crop on 16M sensor is x1.1
4K crop on 20M sensor is x1.25
Except GH5 and G9
autofocus is very slow as you make up for it to record videos for youtube
Is it good for film making and what are cheaper alternative lenses ?
danyal visuals yes. Picture quality wise it’s like a GH5. A good prime lens is the 25mm f1.7. Most of the Panasonic lenses (non-Leica) are somewhat affordable minus some of their really small prime lenses.
Geeky Nerdy Techy cheers man🙌 curry’s have a 200pound cash back so I’ll be picking it up
I only wish it had adjustable frame rates
It sort of does but nothing in the slow motion territory. It can do 25/30/50/60 :-)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy ya slow motion is where its at since I do music videos and weddings
Great
what about mike ?
