  • Making Wild Rose Hip Syrup! If you don't have access to wild rose hips, you can use rose hip tea found in high end grocery stores or health food stores.
For Dried Rose Hips (Tea or Dehydrated) Use 1.5 oz of dried rose hips to 24 oz of filtered water. Boil/simmer down to 1/2 and add 1 cup organic sugar, cane sugar, or honey - Adjust the sugar or honey used to your taste. Bring back up to a boil for 5 minutes stirring constantly. Store in a sterilized jar in refrigerator up to 10 days. Use on oatmeal, pancakes, toast, in tea, lemon-aide, kombucha, etc. This makes a great gift too!

Very interesting. This is the first time I have ever actually seen them seen them processed. Thanks for sharing.

They are very tasty made in syrup, into jelly or jam and candy. This is one of the "frost" fruits I look forward to every year to harvest. The first heavy frost helps them ripen/sweeten. Thanks for stopping by! :-)

If you get a chance to pick any, try the syrup, it is so easy to make and the taste of it is devine! Let me know how you use them. I'd love to hear. Thanks for stopping by! :-)

Hi Sha Whit - We just had a hard frost so the wild rose hips are ripe & really sweet right now. Michigan is having a really good harvest this year for rose hips. I hope to get a few more picking in this year to re-stock the dry goods I am almost out of. Enjoy a walk in the woods, they are easy to find and abundant here! Thanks for stopping by! :-)

Oh that is so great! I don't have access to wild rose hips but I do have a lot of tea. I usually drink rosehip tea in the colder months because it keeps away the colds. You have those nice canning jars to. I want to get some of those. Not happy with metal lids nowadays as you know a lot of people not happy with them.

The Rose Hip Syrup is so easy to make and it tastes wonderful. It makes a really nice gift as well. I love Weck Jars! I have all of my spices in Weck Jars, I store stuff in the refrigerator in them, etc. The small ones are great for homemade yogurt & rice pudding! Mrs. Volfie, Our Half Acre Homestead, is giving away a case of them on her "Favorite Things Contest" - Check it out. The contest is open until the end of November. :-) Thanks for stopping by!

BacktoBasics Gal Yeah I know about the contest. I even phoned the Weck distributor here in Canada to get more information about them and to tell her that her main website was down. Unfortunately I have a lot of Bernardin jars and have a couple boxes of older standard lids before they decided to cheap out and change them. I don't have any lids for my wide mouth jars except a box of the new ones. Also I only do water bath canning at the moment and there is only so much jams, jellies, pickles, tomatoes etc I will make. I also have some very old crown sealers with the metal rings and glass lids, but no gaskets for them. They used to belong to my mother. I should see about Tattlers also.

This BBG 😊. I hope you had a wonderful holiday and happy new year. So I was looking this past fall for some by me. Either this wasn't a good year for them or I just don't know how to find them lol. I have rose bushes but they are just for their beauty and not good for the hips. I would luv to plant some here for the hips. But until then, I'll have to get them via the store or online lol. I'm debating on getting the whole hip or just the tea. I'm thinking the whole hip would have a better taste for syrup opposed to the tea. What is your opinion on that? Thanks for sharing this great information on them.
    Take care-Debbie

      Hi Tracy,
On the box I show on the Organic Tea Package is what our wild roses look like. Just google wild roses in the area and state you live in and photographs should pop up for you. You can also check with your local extension service for additional help and/or identification. I hope this helps! Thanks for stopping by! :-)

How many tea bags would you use per 24 oz water?

    • @BacktoBasicsGal
      @BacktoBasicsGal  9 років тому

I would start out with about an ounce and taste it. You can add more if you like a richer syrup or less if you want a lighter tasting syrup. Its really a recipe you make based upon what you like. I hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by!

I have never tried rosehips,do they taste like roses? I was wondering if the syrup has a perfumey taste?

Rose Hip Syrup is a light syrup with a delicate fruity taste to it. That is the best way I know how to describe the taste - wonderful. The syrup has a delicate floral smell. I hope that helps to give you an idea. Thanks for stopping by!

I have never tried rose hips before. This is one I need to try, but do they come off of rose bushes? or just wild rose bushes? Are they all safe?

Hi Christina - Rose hips are the seeds that appear on rose bushes after the flowers are pollinated. They appear late in the year after the flowers naturally dry and the petals fall off so don't pull the dead flowers off the rose bush! All rose hips are edible. Be aware that there are a few varieties of roses sold that are "sterile" and will not produce rose hips. Some rose hips taste better than others with flavors ranging from a sweet, delicate taste to a funky, kinda bitter taste. ( I use the bitter hips for my hand creams and lotions.) Some taste better cooked than raw. My favorite rose hips are of course the delicate sweet ones! Be sure the rose hips you use have not been sprayed with pesticides. I find the old non-hybrids are the best tasting. Let me know how you like it - I adore rose hip syrup! As always, thanks for stopping by! :-)

I love roses, I will be looking for some this year... non hybrid. I can't wait to try them. I never use any 'bug spray' or pesticides, I just like them natural. lol
