Keep in mind, because I know people's fingers are going to get sore pointing out what I missed and all these other variables, etc. I got it...this is basic. What if you're in the middle of a turn and lock the rear? Hope you're wearing full, quality gear because you're probably going to highside yourself and get hurt pretty badly. What if you're in the dirt? In a straight line? Keep it locked up because if you have knobby tires, they will probably dig into the dirt more and more providing good stopping power...on the cement, the rear brake isn't powerful at all and when you're sliding across the pavement...it's not helping much at all. In a turn, that depends on how much lean angle and speed....because you may want to do a brake slide into another turn...who knows. There's always "what ifs" you can say, HOWEVER what I wish everyone will do is go to a dead end road or parking lot and practice locking up the rear tire to see what if FEELS like and how to manage it. If your bike has ABS, ok, go stomp on the rear to feel what that feels like too. If you don't do any trial and error and experiment, your understanding will always be limited. Because of this, I can't type a response and give someone experience...you have to go out on the bike and try things out. I also turn off my ABS like I did in this video and practice locking up the front tire too...to learn how to manage that. This is the biggest difference I see with what I do and everyone else...too many are unwilling to go and attempt these things and practice and only rely on what's written in a book or what someone else said or what was taught in theory but not in practice. You will never gain a deep understanding to anything on the bike without putting in the time to experience these things for yourself on the bike. Not just once, but over and over again, changing one variable at a time and repeating the process. Sorry for such a long statement but hopefully this will help filter out the bs and if you're too lazy to read this, you're probably too lazy to go and practice as well.

This saved my life once, had to emergency brake and counter steer at the same time and ended up stomping on the rear and was skidding for 50-75ft I released the brake when I came down to 20mph and it wanted to high side but there was not enough momentum. If I didn’t skid there wouldn’t have been enough stopping power to avoid collision. Some elderly man cut 3 lanes from the left turn only lane on a 60mph road, luckily I’m always anticipating people to do dumb shit like that so I wasn’t even surprised I was ready to react

In my years (a lot of years) of MTB, I used this skidding technique to ride down the mountain - in fact, this is a requirement to downhill. I'm pretty used to it, but I never tried this on a motorcycle. I'm thinking about plucking out the ABS fuse and doing some practice on rear wheel skidding. Thanks for the tip.

@@rodya_malverde Yes, to bleed some speed but also, to manage some turns. Sometimes you just can't make the turn the 'normal' way and you need to skid to position the bike to make the turn.

great instructions and you left out a very important part: when the rear is skidding and its coming around you MUST steer the front wheel into the direction the bike is going, otherwise the back end will come all the way around (180) and you will low side the bike
your demos going 20 mph in the parking lot stopped the bike in only a few feet. If your rear brake locked up, or your engine seized at 85mph it will be a LONG skid to a stop - you have to steer all the way thru itf
if your engine locked up you will be temped to pull in the clutch to free the back wheel - same deal, if its sideways get on the rear brake and skid to a stop
When we were kids we use to come down the street on bicycles as fast as possible and lock up the rear brake to see who could leave the longest skid marks on the asphalt. Great practice - expensive way to amuse yourself...

you were going slow enough in this video that the momentum stopped before the rear could come all the way around
recommend you try it on a dirt bike or a mountain bike on dirt before you try it on a street bike
or just search for bike crash videos - Ive seen several: rider locks up the rear tire on a curve, bike does a 180 and goes low side.....

I remember when I skidded once 20 ft during a rainy day the feeling was scarier than my first time popping a wheelie. I think it’s because I was new to the feeling and didn’t know what to do. Either way I made myself stay calm and sort of committed to how I was moving and at the last minute when I was about to rear end the car in front of me something told me to act fast so I slowly released the rear brake eased out the clutch added a bit of throttle and regained traction and lane filtered through the middle until I made a full stop. After that day I realized how important it was to have brake control ,adjusting your riding to the conditions, and being as calm as you can be when facing an unfamiliar situation on a bike because had I panicked I could’ve dropped my bike. But in the end I was ok.

this vid is for slowing down and stopping and braking, mine usually only likes to slip around when im gassing it and turning or pulling out of somewhere etc. when i notice that i usually let off the gas a little but not completely (i imagine going from accelerating to engine braking while my tire is slipping wouldnt help things)

Was very interested in this topic, and I was lucky I had abit of experience with what you are saying and it's spot on. Short version of my experience: zx10r 2010 basically new 24000kms, clutch exploded for no reason while riding at 110-120kph on a straight (luckily). all the metal went into engine which locked up rear tyre and I kept the rear tyre directly behind the front while I slowly applied front brake and went off the road into a patch of grass. Luckily upright. Bit of luck involved aswell. Kawasaki wasnt interested because it was out of warranty period. But that's another story. (Very happy with this video good topic)

It also applies to cars in that you should go to a big empty parking lot, often more available at night with an inch or 2 of snow and practice sliding the back tires. Experts thought crashes would go way down by adding ABS electronics, however the average driver overcompensates the steering during a back tires slide and still crashes, even with ABS improving the steering while the front tires are sliding.

In this scenario unfortunately the reflex action can be to throw your feet out to save falling as the bike can start heavily leaning while skidding.. in throwing your feet out you inadvertently release the brake pedal and that can be catastrophic (at even 10mph depending on how far out the tail end is). It requires controlled practice to force yourself to keep that foot down on the pedal when tail end is sliding out.. then quickly foot down when you come to a stop before bike drops to side... and if it drops, so be it - better than the alternative!! Other thing to remember is when emergency braking you're probably also engine braking, so doesn't take much pedal force for rear lockup.

Locking up the rear actually helped me in a situation. Car with no brake lights slammed on their brakes. There wasn't enough space to swerve as their were a couple cars in the left lane and a median strip on the right. The skid helped me slow down just enough but also pointed my bike the left of the car so I could accelerate into a gap. Sure there was probably something better to do or even a way to avoid it perhaps. But that comfort I had through practicing locking up the rear wheel played its part.

You're going straight because you're steering into the skid, or the direction you're wanting to go. We do this in racecars to handle oversteer. Otherwise you'll just completely spin, and I'd assume go flying off the bike, I'm not willing to test that😂 What I don't understand, is why the MSF course tells you only to ride it out if the rear skids, as it's not applicable I'm every situation, as you demonstrated.

Personally, I ride a bike with ABS
This technology is available for almost all new and most second hand bikes
I had a bike without ABS, a Suzuki Boulevard. I locked up the back wheel when a Kangaroo ran out in front of me. I went down the road sideways but I held the bike up and missed the Kangaroo
I realised that I needed ABS technology and traded the Boulevard in on a new Suzuki VStrom 650 XT
I have now put 40,000 km on the VStrom and have never activated the ABS when riding except to see if it was working once on wet grass. You don’t need ABS until you need it, and when that happens you will be glad you have it.
Very few riders will gently squeeze the brakes on in an emergency situation like I had. My advice, get ABS, we need all the help we can get and I don’t care how good you think you are.

My handle bar was slapping my tank. I don't know how I got my control back after few seconds and I survived that possible crash. It was a 2006 yamaha vster 650 with saddleboxs installed. I think when I was almost crashing my saddleboxes were hitting the road and prevented falling? Those tires are new and I recently changed them. And luckily there was no other vehicles on the road at that time. Every motorcyclist should give offroad riding a try. The traction is less predictable and your bike just skids a lot. It's good training. Your body gets used to it and reacts by instict. When skids happen on pavement you no longer panic. You're body just knows what to do.

Just to add, a rider can intentionally use this technique to change direction quicker much like if off roading where you may want to take a very tight corner but keep the bike momentum up.

I don't know how but second week after stepping up to my bandit I accidentally downshifted twice at once under high RPM braking (while being stupid) locked the back wheel and it went out sideways all the way to steering lock. Just hung myself behind the bikes direction of travel and kept the front brake steady and the bike after a few long seconds slowed down and put itself straight again.
    Pure beginners luck.

it's not flashing, they're always on. it's the LEDs and the camera's inability to record the lights or whatever. They're Clearwaters, I made a video about them.

What do you do if the rear tire starts to skid when on the throttle and not the brake? Happened to me accelerating out of the exit on a roundabout and hit gravel that someone dumped at the exit. Ended up high-sided off the bike, but it was only 15mph. Still got a broken ankle from the landing though.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  2 роки тому

yup, that's very common to happen..too much throttle, too soon, at the wrong time, with the wrong lean angle.

To lock up the rear brake with the tires out of alignment, are you turning the handlebars some before stomping on the rear brake?

I just passed my MSF course few months ago. I am 5’10” 133 lbs.
Should I buy a CBR 650F to learn on?
Or will that be too much for a beginner?
