    I love the blue paint on the inside. It really makes the wood visible and yet it is very soft on the eyes.

    This jig seems really helpful and really makes it possible to glue up boards without a planer. It makes pallet wood projects a lot more accessible to begin woodworking without a lot of powertools.

    can confirm that spray lacquer is very good on wood with a nice grain. used it on some oak that I had stuck together and turned on the lathe to make a shaft for a lamp. Looks shiny and smooth to the touch

    I like the painted inside faces, Bob. My sister-in-law's in-laws have tons of trays in their house. English is a funny language isn't it. For example "...would wood to wood." I like it a lot. Good vid

      +Sean Rubino the little pop of colour really makes it!

    •  8 років тому +2

      +Sean Rubino How about Swedish: "Får får får? Nej får får lamm", which translates to "Does sheep get sheep? No sheep get lambs". Får = Sheep, får = gets :)

      hehe... I screwed mine up I realise, it's supposed to be: "Får får får? Nej får får inte får, får får lamm" ... "Does sheep get sheep? No sheep doesn't get sheep, sheep gets lambs"

      +Ben Brandt Thanks Ben! Yeah, adding a pop of bold color really changes pallet projects quite a bit in my opinion. It actually helps them attract an entirely new type of buyer as well, if you're selling them.

    The spray coating really brings the wood to life... that old wood has a lot of character.... I liked your colour scheme in the video..... in England I've seen similar items retail for around £20... in the posh shops... Another useful video... thanks

    Pretty cool, you could also use your X-carve to make the side panels with handle holes. This would give a possibility of intricate top curve shapes. And take away the need to chisel a straight line.

    I have been making almost the exact same thing as gifts for the family, its a really fun project. I like to use my router to round over the inside of the handle to give it a nicer feel. I will definitely give the paint work you did in this clip a try, it looks really good! Love the pallet wood videos!

    • @Iliketomakestuff
      @Iliketomakestuff  8 років тому

      +Gavin Byron Yes! I've always rounded over the edges as well, but once I thought about painting, I wasn't sure how that would work out, since there wouldn't be a clean edge to stop the paint it.
      I'm sure there's a clever way to mix those two looks though.

  • @IAmKyleBrown

    Very cool, really digging the contrast between finished wood, raw pallet wood, and the accent of paint. Will definitely be looking at these for this years christmas gifts.
    To your comment about the difficulty taping the hole for the handle, I've found similar success on other projects applying paint, and then cutting/drilling after.

    Should be mentioned to look for the ippc code when choosing which pallets to use. Anything stamped (HT,KD or DH) is safe, anything with a MB (methyl-bromide) is not. If the pallet is not stamped it should not be used. It wasn't until 2003 in the US that it became standard practice to not use arsenic in pressure treatment of even residential grade lumber. Not a guarantee that it could be unsafe, but with sanding and cutting you would definitely want to take some extra precautions. No troll, just adding some constructive info. Still a great build and one of my favorite channels. -Chris

    • @MakerInTraining
      @MakerInTraining 8 років тому

      I wish he would have mentioned something in passing at least. Not hard to find good pallets just got to watch. Wonder what his thoughts are on this?

    • @Iliketomakestuff
      @Iliketomakestuff  8 років тому +1

      +effreek It's definitely something you need to be aware of when working with pallets, but it's also one of those things that I can't mention every time I use them in a video. There has been quite a bit of discussion around it on UA-cam, so I didn't feel the need to rehash it. Generally though, I only grab them if they're marked HT (heat treated)

    I like your fast pallet projects. Looks great Bob!

  • @MrAndrewmcgibbon
    @MrAndrewmcgibbon 8 років тому

    I see a lot of people using spray lacquer because it dries fast. I like lacquer but I hate the fumes. lacquer thinner is volatile. it evaporates so fast its explosive. Shellac if thinned properly dries just as fast and the thinner is alcohol. Alcohol is a lot less explosive. the other advantage to shellac is shellac re-wets the previous application so when you are done you have a single layer not multiple layers. you need a compressor and a small spray gun. but if you already have a compressor all you need is a detail spray gun. Harbor Freight sells a pretty good HVLP detail gun for like $16

    X-carve CNC would be great on those end pieces. get the curves to match easily, and cut out the handles with minimal sanding needed. Not to mention a little carved design in the end pieces just for fun...

    • @Iliketomakestuff
      @Iliketomakestuff  8 років тому

    • @vgamesx1
      @vgamesx1 8 років тому

      +SJWoodworks or.. you could do it in a similar fashion but use something like a dremel to sand it, which would make it a lot easier plus you could round off the corners of the handles for a more comfortable grip and of course like a CNC you could make nice carvings/engravings along the sides.

    Hey there stuff-maker. Inspired by you, I made a tray today for all the coffee cups that needs to be carried from the workshop, through the entire school to get cleaned. Just balancing them on a sheet of MDF just wouldn't do.
    Managed to keep the rough look of the pallet wood with out risking getting splinters.
