  • The Lost Village of Lassodie also known as the St Ninians opencast mine.
Lassodie was a coal mining village and its demise is an indication of the fate which has befallen the mining industry since those early days. Gone are the houses and the wee shops which served the inhabitants, gone are the various clubs and societies, the pub, the farm and, finally, gone are the people who made Lassodie what it was.

I use this area to test the Phantom 3 Pro out as it very quiet with plenty of space to fly. I thought I would put a few clips together. Apologies for the props in the shot.

Love your music Findlay it's fitting for a village that had a lot of memories for a mining community. lost forever.

as a youngster,i used to walk from Kelty, through the forest down to play around Lassodie, that was in the seventies and there wasn't much left of it,the Browns had a working farm, there was an old cottage and a newer build house belonging to an actor, both next to Loch Fitty, also there were old stone pillars, that now sit at the top Kelty end,of the old open cast mine road that leads to ST Ninians coal site, the coal site pushed Lassodie off the map entirely,it even stopped the fishing on Loch Fitty

    Hello Findlay,
I am a journalist for The Courier and doing a feature on Lassodie.
Your drone footage is great, and I wondered if I could kindly use some of it for the feature and give you a credit?
    Thanks

What an excellent video. Wonderful. Such a shame vandals have damaged and spoiled the top of the Monolith

Nice video and interesting links to the lost villages. Was up there at the weekend and was astonished at the potential to make this area a real gem in Scotland.Nice following the old road, now the footpath back to the main road. Was trying to find the hanging rock next to the old road which is shown on some os maps but was getting too dark so will leave for another day.
    Cheers.

Did any buildings survive? I thought I read somewhere that the old manse was still standing?

no buildings left, the last building to be bulldozed, was the old farm house, that ST Ninians coal site used as their office, the stone pillars that were in Lassodie, now sit at the entrance of the old coal site road,at the road entrance at Kelty, where it ran right onto the coal site

i worked in the opencast coal industry,i wasn't at the ST Ninians site that wiped Lassodie off the map,but i belong Kelty and used to walk through our local forest,to go play around Lassodie as a kid in the seventies
my father was the mine manager at ST Ninians, his office was in the last building down there

@@Nealson454 they had huge plans for the area after the coal site was gone, but the owner of Scottish Coal,Collin Corns an Englishman played a blinder after all the coal was out and declared Scottish Coal bankrupt,so they wouldn't have to reinstate the ground correctly
that pyramid, was the muck removed from the first cut,if i remember correctly,at the time the pyramid and the rest of the muck needing shifted, would have cost £4 per square ton to shift,2 million ton needed shifted = £8 million in costs, dodgy owner declares bankruptcy to avoid it,even though he is a multi millionaire with companies in England worth millions,he also took fossils found on the coal site that should have stayed in Scotland,he used them to line the driveway of his English office
i know this as my father ran ST Ninians start to finish, local politicians asked him questions about it all,but declined comment,as he was now retired (coward),the reason my father was a coward,he could have proved what had happened and got our local area reinstated correctly, instead of it being left as is,i'm 6th generation Kelty on my mothers side, proud of my local heritage, ashamed my own father wouldn't fight for it

WOULD HAVE BEEN CHEAPER RENOVATING THE HOUSES AND SCHOOL THERE AND THE HOTEL COULD HAVE MADE ACCOMODATION, INSTEAD OF A FANCY FIELD,, RUINED IT FOR THE OSPREYS AND RARE LIZARDS AND NEWTS.

it was all about the coal, the site was making £195,000 per week profit, that's why it happened, the man who bought scottish coal, took all the profit fromST Ninians coal site, then filed for bankruptcy, despite him being a multi millionare, karma caught up with him,as he had a bad stroke, the mans name is Collin Corns

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER BUILDING NEW HOUSES IN LASSODIE INSTEAD OF A ROMAN HILL, MONEY WASTED BY COUNCIL NO DOUBT,

      @inlimbo6019 3 роки тому

the coal site were responsible for reinstating the area,NOT the council, they are building new houses in Kingseat and Kelty,Lassodie needs to stay wild,as we've lost most of our forest in the last few years,by forest i mean Kelty wid's,where i played as a child in the seventies
on the subject of new houses, the new houses are what ruined Kelty and our village way of life, too many strangers, compared to when i grew up and we all new every current generation of families that belonged Kelty
Jock...before you ask,yes i know who you are,as a youngster i used to see you and titch broon, etc jumping about my village,up to all sorts lol
